Throughput Maximization for UAV-Aided Backscatter Communication Networks
This paper investigates unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aided backscatter communication (BackCom) networks, where the UAV is leveraged to help the backscatter device (BD) forward signals to the receiver. Based on the presence or absence of a direct link between BD and receiver, two protocols, namely transmit-backscatter (TB) protocol and transmit-backscatter-relay (TBR) protocol, are proposed to utilize the UAV to assist the BD. In particular, we formulate the system throughput maximization problems for the two protocols by jointly optimizing the time allocation, reflection coefficient and UAV trajectory. Different static/dynamic circuit power consumption models for the two protocols are analyzed. The resulting optimization problems are shown to be non-convex, which are challenging to solve. We first consider the dynamic circuit power consumption model, and decompose the original problems into three sub-problems, namely time allocation optimization with fixed UAV trajectory and reflection coefficient, reflection coefficient optimization with fixed UAV trajectory and time allocation, and UAV trajectory optimization with fixed reflection coefficient and time allocation. Then, an efficient iterative algorithm is proposed for both protocols by leveraging the block coordinate descent method and successive convex approximation (SCA) techniques. In addition, for the static circuit power consumption model, we obtain the optimal time allocation with a given reflection coefficient and UAV trajectory and the optimal reflection coefficient with low computational complexity by using the Lagrangian dual method. Simulation results show that the proposed protocols are able to achieve significant throughput gains over the compared benchmarks
On the performance of a uav-aided wireless network based on nb-iot
In recent years, interest in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as a means to provide wireless connectivity has substantially increased thanks to their easy, fast and flexible deployment. Among the several possible applications of UAV networks explored by the current literature, they can be efficiently employed to collect Internet-of-Things (IoT) data because the non-stringent latency and small-size traffic type is particularly suited for UAVs’ inherent characteristics. However, the implications coming from the implementation of existing technology in such kinds of nodes are not straightforward. In this article, we consider a Narrow Band IoT (NB-IoT) network served by a UAV base station. Because of the many configurations possible within the NB-IoT standard, such as the access structure and numerology, we thoroughly review the technical aspects that have to be implemented and may be affected by the proposed UAV-aided IoT network. For proper remarks, we investigate the network performance jointly in terms of the number of successful transmissions, access rate, latency, throughput and energy consumption. Then, we compare the obtained results on different and known trajectories in the research community and study the impact of varying UAV parameters such as speed and height. Moreover, the numerical assessment allows us to extend the discussion to the potential implications of this model in different scenarios. Secure Short-Packet Communications via UAV-Enabled Mobile Relaying: Joint Resource Optimization and 3D Trajectory Design
Short-packet communication (SPC) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are
anticipated to play crucial roles in the development of 5G-and-beyond wireless
networks and the Internet of Things (IoT). In this paper, we propose a secure
SPC system, where a UAV serves as a mobile decode-and-forward (DF) relay,
periodically receiving and relaying small data packets from a remote IoT device
to its receiver in two hops with strict latency requirements, in the presence
of an eavesdropper. This system requires careful optimization of important
design parameters, such as the coding blocklengths of both hops, transmit
powers, and UAV's trajectory. While the overall optimization problem is
nonconvex, we tackle it by applying a block successive convex approximation
(BSCA) approach to divide the original problem into three subproblems and solve
them separately. Then, an overall iterative algorithm is proposed to obtain the
final design with guaranteed convergence. Our proposed low-complexity algorithm
incorporates 3D trajectory design and resource management to optimize the
effective average secrecy throughput of the communication system over the
course of UAV-relay's mission. Simulation results demonstrate significant
performance improvements compared to various benchmark schemes and provide
useful design insights on the coding blocklengths and transmit powers along the
trajectory of the UAV
A Survey on UAV-enabled Edge Computing: Resource Management Perspective
Edge computing facilitates low-latency services at the network's edge by
distributing computation, communication, and storage resources within the
geographic proximity of mobile and Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices. The recent
advancement in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) technologies has opened new
opportunities for edge computing in military operations, disaster response, or
remote areas where traditional terrestrial networks are limited or unavailable.
In such environments, UAVs can be deployed as aerial edge servers or relays to
facilitate edge computing services. This form of computing is also known as
UAV-enabled Edge Computing (UEC), which offers several unique benefits such as
mobility, line-of-sight, flexibility, computational capability, and
cost-efficiency. However, the resources on UAVs, edge servers, and IoT devices
are typically very limited in the context of UEC. Efficient resource management
is, therefore, a critical research challenge in UEC. In this article, we
present a survey on the existing research in UEC from the resource management
perspective. We identify a conceptual architecture, different types of
collaborations, wireless communication models, research directions, key
techniques and performance indicators for resource management in UEC. We also
present a taxonomy of resource management in UEC. Finally, we identify and
discuss some open research challenges that can stimulate future research

PaFiR : Particle Filter Routing – a predictive relaying scheme for UAV-assisted IoT communications in future innovated networks
Increasing urbanization, smart cities and other cutting-edge technologies offer the prospect of providing more functions to benefit citizens by relying on the substantial data processing and exchange capabilities now possible. This can generate significant unpredictable and unbalanced data loads for the bearing IoT network to support its application and service demands. We thus propose a wireless routing scheme designed to use the Particle Filter algorithm to empower portable smart devices with intelligent capacities for the radio communication system. This facilitates the offloading of traffic from traditional wireless networks and enables the IoT system to adopt unmanned aerial vehicles, thus also offering further innovation to flying network platforms. The proposed PaFiR routing protocol offers the network more scalability, tolerance and resilience, to achieve the goal of smart relaying. Simulation results that demonstrate the routing algorithm designed offers excellent performance when compared with existing wireless relaying schemes. It provides delivery ratios that are improved by up to 40% without unmanageable increases in latency or overheads
Communication and Control in Collaborative UAVs: Recent Advances and Future Trends
The recent progress in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) technology has
significantly advanced UAV-based applications for military, civil, and
commercial domains. Nevertheless, the challenges of establishing high-speed
communication links, flexible control strategies, and developing efficient
collaborative decision-making algorithms for a swarm of UAVs limit their
autonomy, robustness, and reliability. Thus, a growing focus has been witnessed
on collaborative communication to allow a swarm of UAVs to coordinate and
communicate autonomously for the cooperative completion of tasks in a short
time with improved efficiency and reliability. This work presents a
comprehensive review of collaborative communication in a multi-UAV system. We
thoroughly discuss the characteristics of intelligent UAVs and their
communication and control requirements for autonomous collaboration and
coordination. Moreover, we review various UAV collaboration tasks, summarize
the applications of UAV swarm networks for dense urban environments and present
the use case scenarios to highlight the current developments of UAV-based
applications in various domains. Finally, we identify several exciting future
research direction that needs attention for advancing the research in
collaborative UAVs
