    Performance Analysis of Micro Unmanned Airborne Communication Relays for Cellular Networks

    This paper analyses the potential of utilising small unmanned-aerial-vehicles (SUAV) as wireless relays for assisting cellular network performance. Whilst high altitude wireless relays have been investigated over the past 2 decades, the new class of low cost SUAVs offers new possibilities for addressing local traffic imbalances and providing emergency coverage.We present field-test results from an SUAV test-bed in both urban and rural environments. The results show that trough-to-peak throughput improvements can be achieved for users in poor coverage zones. Furthermore, the paper reinforces the experimental study with large-scale network analysis using both stochastic geometry and multi-cell simulation results.Comment: conferenc

    Efficient cellular load balancing through mobility-enriched vehicular communications

    Supporting effective load balancing is paramount for increasing network utilization efficiency and improving the perceivable user experience in emerging and future cellular networks. At the same time, it is becoming increasingly alarming that current communication practices lead to excessive energy wastes both at the infrastructure side and at the terminals. To address both these issues, this paper discusses an innovative communication approach enabled by the implementation of device-to-device (d2d) communication over cellular networks. The technique capitalizes on the delay tolerance of a significant portion of Internet applications and the inherent mobility of the nodes to achieve significant performance gains. For delay-tolerant messages, a mobile node can postpone message transmission—in a store–carry and forward manner—for a later time to allow the terminal to achieve communication over a shorter range or to postpone communication to when the terminal enters a cooler cell, before engaging in communication. Based on this framework, a theoretical model is introduced to study the generalized multihop d2d forwarding scheme where mobile nodes are allowed to buffer messages and carry them while in transit. Thus, a multiobjective optimization problem is introduced where both the communication cost and the varying load levels of multiple cells are to be minimized. We show that the mathematical programming model that arises can be efficiently solved in time. Furthermore, extensive numerical investigations reveal that the proposed scheme is an effective approach for both energy-efficient communication and offering significant gains in terms of load balancing in multicell topologies

    Store, carry and forward for energy efficiency in multi-hop cellular networks with mobile relays

    Abstract The wide scale adoption of smartphones is boosting cellular data traffic with the consequent capacity constraints of cellular systems and increase in energy consumption. A significant portion of cellular data traffic can be deemed as delay tolerant. Such tolerance offers possibilities for designing novel communications and networking solutions that can accommodate the delay tolerant cellular data traffic while reducing their impact on the overall cellular capacity and energy consumption. In this context, this work studies the use of opportunistic store, carry and forward techniques in Multi-Hop Cellular Networks (MCN) to reduce energy consumption for delay tolerant traffic. The study focuses on two-hop MCN networks using mobile relays (MCN-MR), and identifies the optimum mobile relay location and the location from which the relay should start forwarding the information to the cellular base station in order to minimize the overall energy consumption. The study shows that the use of opportunistic store, carry and forward techniques in MCN-MR can significantly reduce energy consumption compared to other solutions, including traditional single-hop cellular systems or direct contact store, carry and forward solutions.This work is supported in part by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and FEDER funds (TEC2011–26109)and the Local Government of Valencia with reference ACIF/2010/161 and BEFPI/2012/06

    Bacterial relay for energy efficient molecular communications

    In multi-cellular organisms, molecular signaling spans multiple distance scales and is essential to tissue structure and functionality. Molecular communications is increasingly researched and developed as a key subsystem in the Internet-of-Nano-Things paradigm. While short range microscopic diffusion communications is well understood, longer range channels can be inefficient and unreliable. Static and mobile relays have been proposed in both conventional wireless systems and molecular communication contexts. In this paper, our main contribution is to analyze the information delivery energy efficiency of bacteria mobile relays. We discover that these mobile relays offer superior energy efficiency compared with pure diffusion information transfer over long diffusion distances. This paper has widespread implications ranging from understanding biological processes to designing new efficient synthetic biology communication systems

    Will 5G See its Blind Side? Evolving 5G for Universal Internet Access

    Internet has shown itself to be a catalyst for economic growth and social equity but its potency is thwarted by the fact that the Internet is off limits for the vast majority of human beings. Mobile phones---the fastest growing technology in the world that now reaches around 80\% of humanity---can enable universal Internet access if it can resolve coverage problems that have historically plagued previous cellular architectures (2G, 3G, and 4G). These conventional architectures have not been able to sustain universal service provisioning since these architectures depend on having enough users per cell for their economic viability and thus are not well suited to rural areas (which are by definition sparsely populated). The new generation of mobile cellular technology (5G), currently in a formative phase and expected to be finalized around 2020, is aimed at orders of magnitude performance enhancement. 5G offers a clean slate to network designers and can be molded into an architecture also amenable to universal Internet provisioning. Keeping in mind the great social benefits of democratizing Internet and connectivity, we believe that the time is ripe for emphasizing universal Internet provisioning as an important goal on the 5G research agenda. In this paper, we investigate the opportunities and challenges in utilizing 5G for global access to the Internet for all (GAIA). We have also identified the major technical issues involved in a 5G-based GAIA solution and have set up a future research agenda by defining open research problems

    Vehicle as a Service (VaaS): Leverage Vehicles to Build Service Networks and Capabilities for Smart Cities

    Smart cities demand resources for rich immersive sensing, ubiquitous communications, powerful computing, large storage, and high intelligence (SCCSI) to support various kinds of applications, such as public safety, connected and autonomous driving, smart and connected health, and smart living. At the same time, it is widely recognized that vehicles such as autonomous cars, equipped with significantly powerful SCCSI capabilities, will become ubiquitous in future smart cities. By observing the convergence of these two trends, this article advocates the use of vehicles to build a cost-effective service network, called the Vehicle as a Service (VaaS) paradigm, where vehicles empowered with SCCSI capability form a web of mobile servers and communicators to provide SCCSI services in smart cities. Towards this direction, we first examine the potential use cases in smart cities and possible upgrades required for the transition from traditional vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) to VaaS. Then, we will introduce the system architecture of the VaaS paradigm and discuss how it can provide SCCSI services in future smart cities, respectively. At last, we identify the open problems of this paradigm and future research directions, including architectural design, service provisioning, incentive design, and security & privacy. We expect that this paper paves the way towards developing a cost-effective and sustainable approach for building smart cities.Comment: 32 pages, 11 figure
