Next generation cellular networks require high capacity, enhanced energy efficiency and guaranteed quality of service (QoS). In order to meet these targets, device-to device (D2D) communication is being considered for future 5th generation especially for certain applications that require the proximity gain, the reuse gain, and the hop gain. In this paper, we investigate energy efficient power control for the uplink of an OFDMA (orthogonal frequency-division multiple access) single-cell communication system composed of both regular cellular users and device to device (D2D) pairs. Firstly, we analyze and mathematically model the actual requirements forD2D communications and traditional cellular links in terms of minimum rate and maximum power requirement. Secondly, we use fractional programming in order to transform the original problem into an equivalent concave one and we use the non-cooperative Game theory in order to characterize the equilibrium. Then, the solution of the game is given as a water-filling power allocation. Furthermore, we implement a distributed power allocation scheme using three ways: a) Fractional programming techniques b) Closed form expression (the novelty is the use of wright omega function). c) Inverse water filling. Finally, simulations in both static and dynamic channel setting are presented to illustrate the improved performance in term of EE, SE (spectral efficiency) and time of execution of the iterative algorithm (Dinkelbach) than the closed form algorithms

Wireless-powered communication and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can complement each other for increasing energy utilization and spectrum efficiency by reconfiguring the surrounding radio environment, however, which has not been sufficiently studied by the existing works. In this paper, we propose a joint radio resource and passive beamforming optimization scheme for a downlink RIS-assisted wireless-powered communication network with a harvest-then-transmit protocol to improve system energy efficiency (EE). In the considered model, the single-antenna wireless devices (WDs) harvest wireless energy from a multi-antenna dedicated power station (PS) through the RIS in the downlink and transmit their independent information to a single-antenna receiver in the uplink by a time-division-multiple-access mode. Our goal is to maximize the total EE of all WDs. To make full use of the beamforming gain provided by both the PS and the RIS, we jointly optimize the active beamforming of the PS and the passive beamforming of the RIS. To deal with the challenging non-convex optimization problem with multiple coupled variables, we first consider fixing the passive beamforming, and converting the remaining radio resource allocation problem into an equivalent convex problem which is solved by using Lagrange dual theory. Then, we fix the optimized resource allocation parameters and optimize the passive beamforming of the RIS by using a semidefinite programming method. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves higher EE compared to the conventional schemes

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been recognized as a potential solution for enhancing the throughput of next-generation wireless communications. NOMA is a potential option for 5G networks due to its superiority in providing better spectrum efficiency (SE) compared to orthogonal multiple access (OMA). From the perspective of green communication, energy efficiency (EE) has become a new performance indicator. A systematic literature review is conducted to investigate the available energy efficient approach researchers have employed in NOMA. We identified 19 subcategories related to EE in NOMA out of 108 publications where 92 publications are from the IEEE website. To help the reader comprehend, a summary for each category is explained and elaborated in detail. From the literature review, it had been observed that NOMA can enhance the EE of wireless communication systems. At the end of this survey, future research particularly in machine learning algorithms such as reinforcement learning (RL) and deep reinforcement learning (DRL) for NOMA are also discussed

This paper studies an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-empowered wireless powered communication network (WPCN) in Internet of Things (IoT) networks. In particular, a power station (PS) with multiple antennas uses energy beamforming to enable wireless charging to multiple IoT devices, in the downlink wireless energy transfer (WET) phase; then, during the uplink wireless information transfer (WIT) phase, these IoT devices utilise the harvested energy to concurrently transmit their individual information signal to a multi-antenna access point (AP), which equips with multi-user decomposition (MUD) techniques to reconstruct the IoT devices’ signal. An IRS is deployed to improve the energy collection and information transmission capabilities in the WET and WIT phases, respectively. To examine the performance of the system under study, We maximize the sum throughput with the aim of jointly designing the optimal solutions for the active PS energy beamforming, AP receive beamforming, passive IRS beamforming, and time scheduling. Due to the multiple coupled variables, the resulting formulation is non-convex, and a two-level scheme to solve the problem is proposed. At the outer level, a one-dimensional (1-D) search method is applied to find the optimal time scheduling, while at the inner level, an iterative block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm is proposed to design the optimal receive beamforming, energy beamforming, and IRS phase shifts. In particular, the receive beamforming part is designed by considering the equivalence between sum rate maximisation and sum mean square error (MSE) minimisation, thereby deriving a closed-form solution. Furthermore, we alternately optimize the energy beamforming and IRS phase shifts using Lagrange dual transformation (LDT), quadratic transformation (QT), and alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) methods. Finally, numerical results are presented to showcase the performance of the proposed solution and highlight its advant..

Information security is one of the most critical issues in wireless networks as the signals transmitted through wireless medium are more vulnerable for interception. Although the existing conventional security techniques are proven to be safe, the broadcast nature of wireless communications introduces different challenges in terms of key exchange and distributions. As a result, information theoretic physical layer security has been proposed to complement the conventional security techniques for enhancing security in wireless transmissions. On the other hand, the rapid growth of data rates introduces different challenges on power limited mobile devices in terms of energy requirements. Recently, research work on wireless power transfer claimed that it has been considered as a potential technique to extend the battery lifetime of wireless networks. However, the algorithms developed based on the conventional optimization approaches often require iterative techniques, which poses challenges for real-time processing. To meet the demanding requirements of future ultra-low latency and reliable networks, neural network (NN) based approach can be employed to determine the resource allocations in wireless communications. This thesis developed different transmission strategies for secure transmission in wireless communications. Firstly, transmitter designs are focused in a multiple-input single-output simultaneous wireless information and power transfer system with unknown eavesdroppers. To improve the performance of physical layer security and the harvested energy, artificial noise is incorporated into the network to mask the secret information between the legitimate terminals. Then, different secrecy energy efficiency designs are considered for a MISO underlay cognitive radio network, in the presence of an energy harvesting receiver. In particular, these designs are developed with different channel state information assumptions at the transmitter. Finally, two different power allocation designs are investigated for a cognitive radio network to maximize the secrecy rate of the secondary receiver: conventional convex optimization framework and NN based algorithm

To Reflect or Not To Reflect: On-Off Control and Number Configuration for Reflecting Elements in RIS-Aided Wireless Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been regarded as a promising technique due to its high array gain and low power. However, the traditional passive RIS suffers from the ``double fading'' effect, which has restricted the performance of passive RIS-aided communications. Fortunately, active RIS can alleviate this problem since it can adjust the phase shift and amplify the received signal simultaneously. Nevertheless, a high beamforming gain often requires a number of reflecting elements, which leads to non-negligible power consumption, especially for the active RIS. Thus, one challenge is how to improve the scalability of the RIS and the energy efficiency. Different from the existing works where all reflecting elements are activated, we propose a novel element on-off mechanism where reflecting elements can be flexibly activated and deactivated. Two different optimization problems for passive RIS and active RIS are formulated by maximizing the total energy efficiency. We develop two different alternating optimization-based iterative algorithms to obtain sub-optimal solutions. Furthermore, we consider special cases involving rate maximization problems for given the same total power budget, and respectively analyze the number configuration for passive RIS and active RIS. Simulation results verify that reflecting elements under the proposed algorithms can be flexibly activated and deactivated
