DyPS: Dynamic Processor Switching for Energy-Aware Video Decoding on Multi-core SoCs
In addition to General Purpose Processors (GPP), Multicore SoCs equipping
modern mobile devices contain specialized Digital Signal Processor designed
with the aim to provide better performance and low energy consumption
properties. However, the experimental measurements we have achieved revealed
that system overhead, in case of DSP video decoding, causes drastic
performances drop and energy efficiency as compared to the GPP decoding. This
paper describes DyPS, a new approach for energy-aware processor switching (GPP
or DSP) according to the video quality . We show the pertinence of our solution
in the context of adaptive video decoding and describe an implementation on an
embedded Linux operating system with the help of the GStreamer framework. A
simple case study showed that DyPS achieves 30% energy saving while sustaining
the decoding performanc
Morphological and Structural Evaluation of Hydration/Dehydration Stages of MgSO4 Filled Composite Silicone Foam for Thermal Energy Storage Applications
Salt hydrates, such as MgSO4·7H2O, are considered attractive materials for thermal energy storage, thanks to their high theoretical storage density. However, pure salt hydrates present some challenges in real application due to agglomeration, corrosion and swelling problems during hydration/dehydration cycles. In order to overcome these limitations, a composite material based on silicone vapor-permeable foam filled with the salt hydrate is here presented. For its characterization, a real-time in situ environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) investigation was carried out in controlled temperature and humidity conditions. The specific set-up was proposed as an innovative method in order to evaluate the morphological evolution of the composite material during the hydrating and dehydrating stages of the salt. The results evidenced an effective micro-thermal stability of the material. Furthermore, dehydration thermogravimetric/differential scanning calorimetric (TG/DSC) analysis confirmed the improved reactivity of the realized composite foam compared to pure MgSO4·7H2O.This work was partially funded by the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades de España

Accurate supercapacitor modeling for energy-harvesting wireless sensor nodes
Supercapacitors are often used in energy-harvesting wireless sensor nodes (EH-WSNs) to store harvested energy. Until now, research into the use of supercapacitors in EH-WSNs has considered them to be ideal or over-simplified, with non-ideal behavior attributed to substantial leakage currents. In this brief, we show that observations previously attributed to leakage are predominantly due to redistribution of charge inside the supercapacitor. We confirm this hypothesis through the development of a circuit-based model which accurately represents non-ideal behavior. The model correlates well with practical validations representing the operation of an EH-WSN, and allows behavior to be simulated over long periods
A Survey of Techniques For Improving Energy Efficiency in Embedded Computing Systems
Recent technological advances have greatly improved the performance and
features of embedded systems. With the number of just mobile devices now
reaching nearly equal to the population of earth, embedded systems have truly
become ubiquitous. These trends, however, have also made the task of managing
their power consumption extremely challenging. In recent years, several
techniques have been proposed to address this issue. In this paper, we survey
the techniques for managing power consumption of embedded systems. We discuss
the need of power management and provide a classification of the techniques on
several important parameters to highlight their similarities and differences.
This paper is intended to help the researchers and application-developers in
gaining insights into the working of power management techniques and designing
even more efficient high-performance embedded systems of tomorrow
