Energy-Efficient \u3cem\u3ek\u3c/em\u3e-Coverage for Wireless Sensor Networks with Variable Sensing Radii
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) consist of spatially-distributed autonomous sensors that can cooperatively monitor physical and environmental conditions. Because of sensors’ resource-constraints in terms of size, power, and bandwidth, one of the fundamental objectives in WSNs is improving energy-efficiency. In this paper, utilizing sensors with variable sensing radii, we propose a group-based technique to obtain energy-efficient k-coverage based on our previous work with the Delaunay-Triangulation-based 1-coverage algorithm. Our sensing-radii optimization technique ensures full coverage and attains nearly-optimal energy consumption in sensing. Furthermore, our ns-2 simulations confirm that the group-based k-coverage reduces sensing energy consumption and maintains a sound coverage ratio for reliable surveillance
Set It and Forget It: Approximating the Set Once Strip Cover Problem
We consider the Set Once Strip Cover problem, in which n wireless sensors are
deployed over a one-dimensional region. Each sensor has a fixed battery that
drains in inverse proportion to a radius that can be set just once, but
activated at any time. The problem is to find an assignment of radii and
activation times that maximizes the length of time during which the entire
region is covered. We show that this problem is NP-hard. Second, we show that
RoundRobin, the algorithm in which the sensors simply take turns covering the
entire region, has a tight approximation guarantee of 3/2 in both Set Once
Strip Cover and the more general Strip Cover problem, in which each radius may
be set finitely-many times. Moreover, we show that the more general class of
duty cycle algorithms, in which groups of sensors take turns covering the
entire region, can do no better. Finally, we give an optimal O(n^2 log n)-time
algorithm for the related Set Radius Strip Cover problem, in which all sensors

Self-* distributed query region covering in sensor networks
Wireless distributed sensor networks are used to monitor a multitude of environments for both civil and military applications. Sensors may be deployed to unreachable or inhospitable areas. Thus, they cannot be replaced easily. However, due to various factors, sensors\u27 internal memory, or the sensors themselves, can become corrupted. Hence, there is a need for more robust sensor networks. Sensors are most commonly densely deployed, but keeping all sensors continually active is not energy efficient. Our aim is to select the minimum number of sensors which can entirely cover a particular monitored area, while remaining strongly connected. This concept is called a Minimum Connected Cover of a query region in a sensor network. In this research, we have designed two fully distributed, robust, self-* solutions to the minimum connected cover of query regions that can cope with both transient faults and sensor crashes. We considered the most general case in which every sensor has a different sensing and communication radius. We have also designed extended versions of the algorithms that use multi-hop information to obtain better results utilizing small atomicity (i.e., each sensor reads only one of its neighbors\u27 variables at a time, instead of reading all neighbors\u27 variables). With this, we have proven self-* (self-configuration, self-stabilization, and self-healing) properties of our solutions, both analytically and experimentally. The simulation results show that our solutions provide better performance in terms of coverage than pre-existing self-stabilizing algorithms
Coverage Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks: Review and Future Directions
The coverage problem in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) can be generally
defined as a measure of how effectively a network field is monitored by its
sensor nodes. This problem has attracted a lot of interest over the years and
as a result, many coverage protocols were proposed. In this survey, we first
propose a taxonomy for classifying coverage protocols in WSNs. Then, we
classify the coverage protocols into three categories (i.e. coverage aware
deployment protocols, sleep scheduling protocols for flat networks, and
cluster-based sleep scheduling protocols) based on the network stage where the
coverage is optimized. For each category, relevant protocols are thoroughly
reviewed and classified based on the adopted coverage techniques. Finally, we
discuss open issues (and recommend future directions to resolve them)
associated with the design of realistic coverage protocols. Issues such as
realistic sensing models, realistic energy consumption models, realistic
connectivity models and sensor localization are covered
Homology-based Distributed Coverage Hole Detection in Wireless Sensor Networks
Homology theory provides new and powerful solutions to address the coverage
problems in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). They are based on algebraic
objects, such as Cech complex and Rips complex. Cech complex gives accurate
information about coverage quality but requires a precise knowledge of the
relative locations of nodes. This assumption is rather strong and hard to
implement in practical deployments. Rips complex provides an approximation of
Cech complex. It is easier to build and does not require any knowledge of nodes
location. This simplicity is at the expense of accuracy. Rips complex can not
always detect all coverage holes. It is then necessary to evaluate its
accuracy. This work proposes to use the proportion of the area of undiscovered
coverage holes as performance criteria. Investigations show that it depends on
the ratio between communication and sensing radii of a sensor. Closed-form
expressions for lower and upper bounds of the accuracy are also derived. For
those coverage holes which can be discovered by Rips complex, a homology-based
distributed algorithm is proposed to detect them. Simulation results are
consistent with the proposed analytical lower bound, with a maximum difference
of 0.5%. Upper bound performance depends on the ratio of communication and
sensing radii. Simulations also show that the algorithm can localize about 99%
coverage holes in about 99% cases
