    Smart Sensing Systems for the Daily Drive

    When driving, you might sometimes wonder, "Are there any disruptions on my regular route that might delay me, and will I be able to find a parking space when I arrive?" Two smartphone-based prototype systems can help answer these questions. The first is ParkSense, which can be used to sense on-street parking-space occupancy when coupled with electronic parking payment systems. The second system can sense and recognize a user's repeated car journeys, which can be used to provide personalized alerts to the user. Both systems aim to minimize the impact of sensing tasks on the device's lifetime so that the user can continue to use the device for its primary purpose.     VANET Applications: Hot Use Cases

    Current challenges of car manufacturers are to make roads safe, to achieve free flowing traffic with few congestions, and to reduce pollution by an effective fuel use. To reach these goals, many improvements are performed in-car, but more and more approaches rely on connected cars with communication capabilities between cars, with an infrastructure, or with IoT devices. Monitoring and coordinating vehicles allow then to compute intelligent ways of transportation. Connected cars have introduced a new way of thinking cars - not only as a mean for a driver to go from A to B, but as smart cars - a user extension like the smartphone today. In this report, we introduce concepts and specific vocabulary in order to classify current innovations or ideas on the emerging topic of smart car. We present a graphical categorization showing this evolution in function of the societal evolution. Different perspectives are adopted: a vehicle-centric view, a vehicle-network view, and a user-centric view; described by simple and complex use-cases and illustrated by a list of emerging and current projects from the academic and industrial worlds. We identified an empty space in innovation between the user and his car: paradoxically even if they are both in interaction, they are separated through different application uses.     Driver Digital Twin for Online Prediction of Personalized Lane Change Behavior

    Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) are supposed to share the road with human-driven vehicles (HDVs) in a foreseeable future. Therefore, considering the mixed traffic environment is more pragmatic, as the well-planned operation of CAVs may be interrupted by HDVs. In the circumstance that human behaviors have significant impacts, CAVs need to understand HDV behaviors to make safe actions. In this study, we develop a Driver Digital Twin (DDT) for the online prediction of personalized lane change behavior, allowing CAVs to predict surrounding vehicles' behaviors with the help of the digital twin technology. DDT is deployed on a vehicle-edge-cloud architecture, where the cloud server models the driver behavior for each HDV based on the historical naturalistic driving data, while the edge server processes the real-time data from each driver with his/her digital twin on the cloud to predict the lane change maneuver. The proposed system is first evaluated on a human-in-the-loop co-simulation platform, and then in a field implementation with three passenger vehicles connected through the 4G/LTE cellular network. The lane change intention can be recognized in 6 seconds on average before the vehicle crosses the lane separation line, and the Mean Euclidean Distance between the predicted trajectory and GPS ground truth is 1.03 meters within a 4-second prediction window. Compared to the general model, using a personalized model can improve prediction accuracy by 27.8%. The demonstration video of the proposed system can be watched at https://youtu.be/5cbsabgIOdM

    Implicit personalization in driving assistance: State-of-the-art and open issues

    In recent decades, driving assistance systems have been evolving towards personalization for adapting to different drivers. With the consideration of driving preferences and driver characteristics, these systems become more acceptable and trustworthy. This article presents a survey on recent advances in implicit personalized driving assistance. We classify the collection of work into three main categories: 1) personalized Safe Driving Systems (SDS), 2) personalized Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS), and 3) personalized In-vehicle Information Systems (IVIS). For each category, we provide a comprehensive review of current applications and related techniques along with the discussion of industry status, benefits of personalization, application prospects, and future focal points. Both relevant driving datasets and open issues about personalized driving assistance are discussed to facilitate future research. By creating an organized categorization of the field, we hope that this survey could not only support future research and the development of new technologies for personalized driving assistance but also facilitate the application of these techniques within the driving automation community</h2

    An Intelligent System-on-a-Chip for a Real-Time Assessment of Fuel Consumption to Promote Eco-Driving

    Pollution that originates from automobiles is a concern in the current world, not only because of global warming, but also due to the harmful effects on people’s health and lives. Despite regulations on exhaust gas emissions being applied, minimizing unsuitable driving habits that cause elevated fuel consumption and emissions would achieve further reductions. For that reason, this work proposes a self-organized map (SOM)-based intelligent system in order to provide drivers with eco-driving-intended driving style (DS) recommendations. The development of the DS advisor uses driving data from the Uyanik instrumented car. The system classifies drivers regarding the underlying causes of non-optimal DSs from the eco-driving viewpoint. When compared with other solutions, the main advantage of this approach is the personalization of the recommendations that are provided to motorists, comprising the handling of the pedals and the gearbox, with potential improvements in both fuel consumption and emissions ranging from the 9.5% to the 31.5%, or even higher for drivers that are strongly engaged with the system. It was successfully implemented using a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) device of the Xilinx ZynQ programmable system-on-a-chip (PSoC) family.     Health initiatives to target obesity in surface transport industries: review and implications for action

    Lifestyle-related chronic diseases pose a considerable burden to the individual and the wider society,&nbsp;with correspondingly negative effects on industry. Obesity is a particular problem for the Australasian&nbsp;road and rail industries where it is associated with specific cardiac and fatigue-related safety risks, and&nbsp;levels are higher than those found in the general population. Despite this recognition, and the&nbsp;introduction of National Standards, very little consensus exists regarding approaches to preventative&nbsp;health for surface transport workers. A review of evidence regarding effective health promotion&nbsp;initiatives is urgently needed to inform best practice in this cohort. This review draws together research&nbsp;informing the scope and effectiveness of health promotion programs, initiatives and interventions&nbsp;targeting overweight and obesity in safety critical surface transport domains including the truck, bus&nbsp;and rail industries. A number of health interventions demonstrated measurable successes, including&nbsp;incentivising, peer mentoring, verbal counselling, development of personalised health profiles, and&nbsp;offer of healthier on-site food choices – some of which also resulted in sizeable return on investment&nbsp;over the long term. &nbsp
