Multilevel Converters: An Enabling Technology for High-Power Applications
| Multilevel converters are considered today as the
state-of-the-art power-conversion systems for high-power and
power-quality demanding applications. This paper presents a
tutorial on this technology, covering the operating principle and
the different power circuit topologies, modulation methods,
technical issues and industry applications. Special attention is
given to established technology already found in industry with
more in-depth and self-contained information, while recent
advances and state-of-the-art contributions are addressed with
useful references. This paper serves as an introduction to the
subject for the not-familiarized reader, as well as an update or
reference for academics and practicing engineers working in
the field of industrial and power electronics.Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología DPI2001-3089Ministerio de Eduación y Ciencia d TEC2006-0386
Block Structured Adaptive Mesh and Time Refinement for Hybrid, Hyperbolic + N-body Systems
We present a new numerical algorithm for the solution of coupled collisional
and collisionless systems, based on the block structured adaptive mesh and time
refinement strategy (AMR). We describe the issues associated with the
discretization of the system equations and the synchronization of the numerical
solution on the hierarchy of grid levels. We implement a code based on a higher
order, conservative and directionally unsplit Godunov's method for
hydrodynamics; a symmetric, time centered modified symplectic scheme for
collisionless component; and a multilevel, multigrid relaxation algorithm for
the elliptic equation coupling the two components. Numerical results that
illustrate the accuracy of the code and the relative merit of various
implemented schemes are also presented.Comment: 40 pages, 10 figures, JPC in press. Extended the code test section,

Simulation of the Effect of Data Exchange Mode Analysis on Network Throughput
Emergence of large scale specialized networks with a large number of computers
marked a new stage in network infrastructure development. In connection with the wide
variety of modern network equipment used for construction of large-scale networks and
increasing complexity of such networks and applications, a developer or system
administrator can no longer depend mainly on intuitive decisions. Optimum network configuration for realization of concrete tasks and effective deployment of applications in modern terms is not possible without conducting a proper research with the use of specialized simulation tools. Increase in bandwidth is followed by a commensurate increase
in the amount of traffic sent over the Internet. Optimizing the use and allocation of bandwidth continues to be an ongoing problem. We present a simulation model to resolve
the technological challenges of increasing the efficiency of data exchange in computer networks
MAESTRO, CASTRO, and SEDONA -- Petascale Codes for Astrophysical Applications
Performing high-resolution, high-fidelity, three-dimensional simulations of
Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) requires not only algorithms that accurately
represent the correct physics, but also codes that effectively harness the
resources of the most powerful supercomputers. We are developing a suite of
codes that provide the capability to perform end-to-end simulations of SNe Ia,
from the early convective phase leading up to ignition to the explosion phase
in which deflagration/detonation waves explode the star to the computation of
the light curves resulting from the explosion. In this paper we discuss these
codes with an emphasis on the techniques needed to scale them to petascale
architectures. We also demonstrate our ability to map data from a low Mach
number formulation to a compressible solver.Comment: submitted to the Proceedings of the SciDAC 2010 meetin
Modular multilevel converter losses model for HVdc applications
Multi-terminal high voltage dc (HVdc) grids can eventually became a feasible solution to transport energy to remote and/ or distant areas and its exploitation depend, among other things, on the performance of the converter terminals. Therefore, to optimize the power transmission strategy along such a grid, it is necessary to recognize the efficiency of all the converters in all points of operation, namely with the different load conditions. In this vision, the aim of this work is to provide the methodology to model the modular multilevel converter (MMC) efficiency by means of a mathematical expression that can describe, over a broad range of active and reactive power flow combinations, the power losses generated by the semiconductors. According to the presented methodology, a polynomial-based model with a reduced number of coefficients is deducted, in such a way that can be directly used for optimal power flow (OPF) studies. The accuracy of the proposed model is characterized by an absolute relative error, at the worst scenario, approximately equal to 3%.Postprint (author's final draft
Eco‐Holonic 4.0 Circular Business Model to Conceptualize Sustainable Value Chain Towards Digital Transition
The purpose of this paper is to conceptualize a circular business model based on an Eco-Holonic Architecture, through the integration of circular economy and holonic principles. A conceptual model is developed to manage the complexity of integrating circular economy principles, digital transformation, and tools and frameworks for sustainability into business models. The proposed architecture is multilevel and multiscale in order to achieve the instantiation of the sustainable value chain in any territory. The architecture promotes the incorporation of circular economy and holonic principles into new circular business models. This integrated perspective of business model can support the design and upgrade of the manufacturing companies in their respective industrial sectors. The conceptual model proposed is based on activity theory that considers the interactions between technical and social systems and allows the mitigation of the metabolic rift that exists between natural and social metabolism. This study contributes to the existing literature on circular economy, circular business models and activity theory by considering holonic paradigm concerns, which have not been explored yet. This research also offers a unique holonic architecture of circular business model by considering different levels, relationships, dynamism and contextualization (territory) aspects
Optimized imaging using non-rigid registration
The extraordinary improvements of modern imaging devices offer access to data
with unprecedented information content. However, widely used image processing
methodologies fall far short of exploiting the full breadth of information
offered by numerous types of scanning probe, optical, and electron
microscopies. In many applications, it is necessary to keep measurement
intensities below a desired threshold. We propose a methodology for extracting
an increased level of information by processing a series of data sets
suffering, in particular, from high degree of spatial uncertainty caused by
complex multiscale motion during the acquisition process. An important role is
played by a nonrigid pixel-wise registration method that can cope with low
signal-to-noise ratios. This is accompanied by formulating objective quality
measures which replace human intervention and visual inspection in the
processing chain. Scanning transmission electron microscopy of siliceous
zeolite material exhibits the above-mentioned obstructions and therefore serves
as orientation and a test of our procedures
