    Evolution of Broadband Communication Networks: Architecture and Applications

    With the rapid increase in users’ demand for flexibility and scalability of communication services, broadband communication networks are facing an ongoing challenge of providing various broadband services using a single communication architecture. This leads to the evolution of a challenging field of multiservice broadband network architectures. This chapter discusses the basic concepts associated with broadband communication network architectures with emphasis on provision of multiservice, and it also focuses on the evolution of broadband communication networks from the traditional architecture to the incorporation of virtualization services, that is, cloud computing. Another important aspect, which relates to the multiservice broadband network, is the “applications” which, as this chapter highlights, are a key-driving factor for the evolution of broadband communication networks. Moreover, this chapter also includes a discussion on New Zealand’s government initiatives to provide improved network coverage within the country

    Providing cost-effective QoS monitoring in multiservice networks

    http://www.ngi2009.eu/In multiservice networks, QoS monitoring needs to be carried out in a per-class basis so that each service class measuring requirements and behavior are met and sensed properly. Facing the shortage of off-the-shelf class-based monitoring solutions, this work is focused on the development of a flexibly QoS monitoring tool oriented to multiservice networks. In this context, after discussing main QoS monitoring issues, we propose a flexible QoS monitoring Java application, totally user parameterized and supporting service differentiation. Benefiting from an edge-to-edge design perspective, this service-oriented tool is able to make a periodic evaluation of relevant QoS metrics for each service class, on an intra-domain or end-to-end path basis. Monitoring results, stored in a MySQL database, are useful to drive both online and offline traffic engineering and service management tasks

    MIRAI Architecture for Heterogeneous Network

    One of the keywords that describe next-generation wireless communications is "seamless." As part of the e-Japan Plan promoted by the Japanese Government, the Multimedia Integrated Network by Radio Access Innovation project has as its goal the development of new technologies to enable seamless integration of various wireless access systems for practical use by 2005. This article describes a heterogeneous network architecture including a common tool, a common platform, and a common access. In particular, software-defined radio technologies are used to develop a multiservice user terminal to access different wireless networks. The common platform for various wireless networks is based on a wireless-supporting IPv6 network. A basic access network, separated from other wireless access networks, is used as a means for wireless system discovery, signaling, and paging.     PluralisMAC: a generic multi-MAC framework for heterogeneous, multiservice wireless networks, applied to smart containers

    Developing energy-efficient MAC protocols for lightweight wireless systems has been a challenging task for decades because of the specific requirements of various applications and the varying environments in which wireless systems are deployed. Many MAC protocols for wireless networks have been proposed, often custom-made for a specific application. It is clear that one MAC does not fit all the requirements. So, how should a MAC layer deal with an application that has several modes (each with different requirements) or with the deployment of another application during the lifetime of the system? Especially in a mobile wireless system, like Smart Monitoring of Containers, we cannot know in advance the application state (empty container versus stuffed container). Dynamic switching between different energy-efficient MAC strategies is needed. Our architecture, called PluralisMAC, contains a generic multi-MAC framework and a generic neighbour monitoring and filtering framework. To validate the real-world feasibility of our architecture, we have implemented it in TinyOS and have done experiments on the TMote Sky nodes in the w-iLab.t testbed. Experimental results show that dynamic switching between MAC strategies is possible with minimal receive chain overhead, while meeting the various application requirements (reliability and low-energy consumption)

    Smart Devices and Services for Smart City

    Citizen quality of life can be improved through facilities and services that have been thought to ease citizen interaction with municipal authorities, offices and structures. All technologies and devices, used for developing these facilities, are the pillars of the Smart City idea: a City that adapts itself, at least in part, to citizens’ needs. Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) could become the backbone of all the smart city projects. Other public services can be loaded on AMI’s to be smart and thus helping to find the affordability of investments. The paper deals with this topic by describing devices and results of a pilot project, which has been carried out in an Italian middle city (Salerno), to experience the use of RF 169MHz wM-bus based AMI. Experimental results regarding a set of about 2500 installed devices for gas and water metering, car parking management and elder tele-assistance, will be reported in detail to show convenience and problems of this approach

    Enhancing QoS metrics estimation in multiclass networks

    This paper discusses the problematic of QoS monitoring, suggesting the use of on-line multipurpose active monitoring in multiclass networks as a powerful tool to efficiently assist and enhance the control of multiple service levels. To improve the simultaneous estimation of one-way QoS metrics, we propose a flexible probing source able to adjust probing patterns to the measurement requirements of each service class, exploring pattern coloring to better sense packet loss.
