Disentangling the Properties of Human Evaluation Methods:A Classification System to Support Comparability, Meta-Evaluation and Reproducibility Testing
Current standards for designing and reporting human evaluations in NLP mean it is generally unclear which evaluations are comparable and can be expected to yield similar results when applied to the same system outputs. This has serious implications for reproducibility testing and meta-evaluation, in particular given that human evaluation is considered the gold standard against which the trustworthiness of automatic metrics is gauged. %and merging others, as well as deciding which evaluations should be able to reproduce each other’s results. Using examples from NLG, we propose a classification system for evaluations based on disentangling (i) what is being evaluated (which aspect of quality), and (ii) how it is evaluated in specific (a) evaluation modes and (b) experimental designs. We show that this approach provides a basis for determining comparability, hence for comparison of evaluations across papers, meta-evaluation experiments, reproducibility testing
Multidisciplinary perspectives on Artificial Intelligence and the law
This open access book presents an interdisciplinary, multi-authored, edited collection of chapters on Artificial Intelligence (‘AI’) and the Law. AI technology has come to play a central role in the modern data economy. Through a combination of increased computing power, the growing availability of data and the advancement of algorithms, AI has now become an umbrella term for some of the most transformational technological breakthroughs of this age. The importance of AI stems from both the opportunities that it offers and the challenges that it entails. While AI applications hold the promise of economic growth and efficiency gains, they also create significant risks and uncertainty. The potential and perils of AI have thus come to dominate modern discussions of technology and ethics – and although AI was initially allowed to largely develop without guidelines or rules, few would deny that the law is set to play a fundamental role in shaping the future of AI. As the debate over AI is far from over, the need for rigorous analysis has never been greater. This book thus brings together contributors from different fields and backgrounds to explore how the law might provide answers to some of the most pressing questions raised by AI. This paper presents two empirical usability studies based on techniques from Human-Computer Interaction (HeI) and software engineering, which were used to elicit requirements for the design of a hypertext generation system. Here we will discuss the findings of these studies, which were used to motivate the choice of adaptivity techniques. The results showed dependencies between different ways to adapt the explanation content and the document length and formatting. Therefore, the system's architecture had to be modified to cope with this requirement. In addition, the system had to be made adaptable, in addition to being adaptive, in order to satisfy the elicited users' preferences

Computational Argumentation Approaches to Improve Sensemaking and Evidence-based Reasoning in Online Deliberation Systems
Deliberation is the process through which communities identify potential solutions for a problem and select the solution that most effectively meets their diverse requirements through dialogic communication. Online deliberation is implemented nowadays with means of social media and online discussion platforms; however, these media present significant challenges and issues that can be traced to inadequate support for Sensemaking processes and poor endorsement of the quality characteristics of deliberation.
This thesis investigates integrating computational argumentation methods in online deliberation platforms as an effective way to improve participants' perception of the quality of the deliberation process, their way of making sense of the overall process and producing healthier social dynamics.
For that, two computational artefacts are proposed: (i) a Synoptical summariser of long discussions and (ii) a Scientific Argument Recommender System (SciArgRecSys).
The two artefacts are designed and developed with state-of-the-art methods (with the use of Large Language Models - LLMs) and evaluated intrinsically and extrinsically when deployed in a real live platform (BCause).
Through extensive evaluation, the positive effect of both artefacts is illustrated in human Sensemaking and essential quality characteristics of deliberation such as reciprocal Engagement, Mutual Understanding, and Social dynamics. In addition, it has been demonstrated that these interventions effectively reduce polarisation, the formation of sub-communities while significantly enhancing the quality of the discussion by making it more coherent and diverse
AI Hype: Public Relations and AI's doomsday machine
This chapter broadens current professional debates by highlighting a different but vital relationship between the PR profession and AI, one in which PR professionals – acting as AI cheerleaders – are deeply implicated in generating AI hype. My discussion explores recent market studies research on disruption and hype cycles, before delving into the latest, somewhat disturbing phase in AI’s hype cycle, in which end-of-the-world scenarios are invoked to stimulate a climate of fear around AI. The chapter concludes by exploring some ethical concerns with promoting AI and automation as humanity’s inevitable future

Automated news in practice: changing the journalistic doxa during COVID-19, at the BBC and across media organisations
This PhD thesis explores the deployment of automated text generation for journalistic
purposesȄalso known as automated news or automated journalismȄwithin
newsrooms. To evaluate its perceived impacts on the work of media practitioners, I
rely on Bourdieuǯs Field theoryǡ but also make use of Actor-network theory to detail
its adoption at a more descriptive level. This study is based on various case studies
and on a mixed-methods framework that is essentially made of 30 semi-structured
interviews conducted with media practitioners, technologists and executives working
at 23 news organisations in Europe, North America and Australia; it also involves
elements of a netnography as online material and screenshots were analysed as part
of this process.
My empirical work starts with a descriptive account that includes three case studies:
one on the use of automated news to cover COVID-19, another one on BBCǯs
experiments with the technology and a last one that shows a cross-national
comparison between three media types (i.e., public service media, news agencies and
newspapers). I then move on to a more interpretative part where I examine media
practitionersǯ reactions to automated news, analysing the challenges of having to rely
on external datasets, the importance of acquiring a computational thinking mindset
and tensions within and outside the field of journalism for this.
My research shows that the use of automated news implies structural changes to
journalism practice and cannot be seen as a mere Dztool of the tradedzǤ For practitionersǡ
the most challenging part lies with being able to master both the uniqueness of
journalistic work and a type of abstract reasoning close to computer programming.
However, this could leave some being unable to adapt to this new computational
spirit, which seems to be gradually taking root within newsrooms. As for future
development of automated news systems, it remains to be seen if media organisations
or platforms will have the upper hand in remaining at the centre of it
