    Real-time localisation system for GPS denied open areas using smart street furniture

    Real-time measurement of crowd dynamics has been attracting significant interest, as it has many applications including real-time monitoring of emergencies and evacuation plans. To effectively measure crowd behaviour, an accurate estimate for pedestrians’ locations is required. However, estimating pedestrians’ locations is a great challenge especially for open areas with poor Global Positioning System (GPS) signal reception and/or lack of infrastructure to install expensive solutions such as video-based systems. Street furniture assets such as rubbish bins have become smart, as they have been equipped with low-power sensors. Currently, their role is limited to certain applications such as waste management. We believe that the role of street furniture can be extended to include building real-time localisation systems as street furniture provides excellent coverage across different areas such as parks, streets, homes, universities. In this thesis, we propose a novel wireless sensor network architecture designed for smart street furniture. We extend the functionality of sensor nodes to act as soft Access Point (AP), sensing Wifi signals received from surrounding Wifi-enabled devices. Our proposed architecture includes a real-time and low-power design for sensor nodes. We attached sensor nodes to rubbish bins located in a busy GPS denied open area at Murdoch University (Perth, Western Australia), known as Bush Court. This enabled us to introduce two unique Wifi-based localisation datasets: the first is the Fingerprint dataset called MurdochBushCourtLoC-FP (MBCLFP) in which four users generated Wifi fingerprints for all available cells in the gridded Bush Court, called Reference Points (RPs), using their smartphones, and the second is the APs dataset called MurdochBushCourtLoC-AP (MBCLAP) that includes auto-generated records received from over 1000 users’ devices. Finally, we developed a real-time localisation approach based on the two datasets using a four-layer deep learning classifier. The approach includes a light-weight algorithm to label the MBCLAP dataset using the MBCLFP dataset and convert the MBCLAP dataset to be synchronous. With the use of our proposed approach, up to 19% improvement in location prediction is achieved

    A Smart and Secure Logistics System Based on IoT and Cloud Technologies

    Recently, one of the hottest topics in the logistics sector has been the traceability of goods and the monitoring of their condition during transportation. Perishable goods, such as fresh goods, have specifically attracted attention of the researchers that have already proposed different solutions to guarantee quality and freshness of food through the whole cold chain. In this regard, the use of Internet of Things (IoT)-enabling technologies and its specific branch called edge computing is bringing different enhancements thereby achieving easy remote and real-time monitoring of transported goods. Due to the fast changes of the requirements and the difficulties that researchers can encounter in proposing new solutions, the fast prototype approach could contribute to rapidly enhance both the research and the commercial sector. In order to make easy the fast prototyping of solutions, different platforms and tools have been proposed in the last years, however it is difficult to guarantee end-to-end security at all the levels through such platforms. For this reason, based on the experiments reported in literature and aiming at providing support for fast-prototyping, end-to-end security in the logistics sector, the current work presents a solution that demonstrates how the advantages offered by the Azure Sphere platform, a dedicated hardware (i.e., microcontroller unit, the MT3620) device and Azure Sphere Security Service can be used to realize a fast prototype to trace fresh food conditions through its transportation. The proposed solution guarantees end-to-end security and can be exploited by future similar works also in other sectors

    TCitySmartF: A comprehensive systematic framework for transforming cities into smart cities

    A shared agreed-upon definition of "smart city" (SC) is not available and there is no "best formula" to follow in transforming each and every city into SC. In a broader inclusive definition, it can be described as an opportunistic concept that enhances harmony between the lives and the environment around those lives perpetually in a city by harnessing the smart technology enabling a comfortable and convenient living ecosystem paving the way towards smarter countries and the smarter planet. SCs are being implemented to combine governors, organisations, institutions, citizens, environment, and emerging technologies in a highly synergistic synchronised ecosystem in order to increase the quality of life (QoL) and enable a more sustainable future for urban life with increasing natural resource constraints. In this study, we analyse how to develop citizen- and resource-centric smarter cities based on the recent SC development initiatives with the successful use cases, future SC development plans, and many other particular SC development solutions. The main features of SC are presented in a framework fuelled by recent technological advancement, particular city requirements and dynamics. This framework - TCitySmartF 1) aims to aspire a platform that seamlessly forges engineering and technology solutions with social dynamics in a new philosophical city automation concept - socio-technical transitions, 2) incorporates many smart evolving components, best practices, and contemporary solutions into a coherent synergistic SC topology, 3) unfolds current and future opportunities in order to adopt smarter, safer and more sustainable urban environments, and 4) demonstrates a variety of insights and orchestrational directions for local governors and private sector about how to transform cities into smarter cities from the technological, social, economic and environmental point of view, particularly by both putting residents and urban dynamics at the forefront of the development with participatory planning and interaction for the robust community- and citizen-tailored services.     Dispensador electrĂłnico de bolsas para la recolecciĂłn de heces caninas en espacios pĂşblicos

    El presente proyecto de investigación tiene como objeto el diseño de un dispensador electrónico, que ayuda en los procesos de control y suministro de bolsas utilizadas en la recolección de heces de mascotas. El sistema se podría emplear en parques y otros lugares públicos de las ciudades. El dispensador está constituido por subsistemas: electrónicos, mecánicos y computacionales; los cuales permiten el proceso de suministro de bolsas. Para su funcionamiento, el dispositivo utiliza como actuadores, motores que proveerán bolsas, también, abren y cierran el depósito de las heces, así mismo, tiene un sistema de autenticación de usuarios compuesto por un módulo de identificación por radiofrecuencia (RFID), se conecta a una base de datos en la nube a través de una red LoRaWAN haciendo uso del protocolo MQTT verificando la existencia del usuario en la plataforma y la disponibilidad de bolsas. La energía necesaria para la operación del módulo se abastecerá mediante un panel solar, una batería y un sistema de conversión de potencia. Dentro de esta propuesta se plantea un diseño partiendo de un análisis de requisitos, seguido de un estudio metodológico que permitió desarrollar los diferentes componentes, se investigó en áreas de IoT, protocolos y seguridad en el IoT y sistemas de recolección de heces caninas.The purpose of this research project is the design of an electronic dispenser, which helps in the control and supply processes of bags used in the collection of pet feces. The system could be used in parks and other public places in cities. The dispenser is made up of electronic, mechanical and computational subsystems, which enable the bag supply process. For its operation, the device uses as actuators, motors that will provide bags, also, open and close the deposit of feces, likewise, it has a user authentication system composed of a radio frequency identification module (RFID), it connects to a database in the cloud through a LoRaWAN network making use of the MQTT protocol verifying the existence of the user on the platform and the availability of bags. The energy required for the operation of the module will be supplied by a solar panel, a battery and a power conversion system. Within this proposal a design is proposed based on a requirements analysis, followed by a methodological study that allowed the development of the different components, research was conducted in the areas of IoT, protocols and security in the IoT and dog feces collection systems

    Law in the present future : approaching the legal imaginary of smart cities with science (and) fiction

    This doctoral research concerns smart cities, describing digital solutions and social issues related to their innovative technologies, adopted models, and major projects around the world. The many perspectives mentioned in it were identified by online tools used for the textual analysis of two databases that were built from relevant publications on the main subject by authors coming from media and academia. Expected legal elements emerged from the applied process, such as privacy, security, transparency, participation, accountability, and governance. A general review was produced on the information available about the public policies of Big Data in the two municipal cases of Rio de Janeiro and Montréal, and their regulation in the Brazilian and Canadian contexts. The combined approaches from science and literature were explored to reflect on the normative concerns represented by the global challenges and local risks brought by urban surveillance, climate change, and other neoliberal conditions. Cyberpunk Science Fiction reveals itself useful for engaging with the shared problems that need to be faced in the present time, all involving democracy. The results achieved reveal that this work was, in fact, about the complex network of practices and senses between (post)modern law and the imaginary of the future.Cette recherche doctorale centrée sur les villes intelligentes met en évidence les solutions numériques et les questionnements sociétaux qui ont trait aux technologies innovantes, ainsi qu’aux principaux modèles et projets développés autour d’elles à travers le monde. Des perspectives multiples en lien avec ces développements ont été identifiées à l’aide d’outils en ligne qui ont permis l’analyse textuelle de deux bases de données comprenant des publications scientifiques et des écrits médiatiques. De ce processus analytique ont émergé des éléments juridiques relatifs aux questions de vie privée, de sécurité, de transparence, de participation, d’imputabilité et de gouvernance. De plus, à partir de ces informations a été réalisée une revue des politiques publiques relatives aux mégadonnées dans les villes de Rio de Janeiro et de Montréal, ainsi que des réglementations nationales du Canada et du Brésil en lien avec ce sujet. Finalement, à travers l’exploration d’écrits scientifiques et fictionnels de la littérature, les principaux enjeux normatifs soulevés localement et mondialement par la surveillance urbaine, les changements climatiques et les politiques néolibérales ont pu être mis à jour. Le courant cyberpunk de la science-fiction s’est avéré particulièrement utile pour révéler les principaux problèmes politiques, en lien avec la préservation de la démocratie, auxquelles sont confrontées nos sociétés présentement. Les résultats de la recherche démontrent finalement la présence d’un réseau de pratiques et de significations entre le droit (post)moderne et les représentations imaginaires du futur

Consequently, many manufacturers subject to frequent change prefer flexible and reconfigurable production systems. Such schemes are often achieved by means of manual assembly, as conventional automated systems are perceived as lacking flexibility. Production lines that incorporate human workers are particularly common within consumer electronics and small appliances. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a possible avenue to achieve smart robotic automation in this context. In this research it is argued that a robust, autonomous object handling process plays a crucial role in future manufacturing systems that incorporate robotics—key to further closing the gap between manual and fully automated production. Novel object grasping is a difficult task, confounded by many factors including object geometry, weight distribution, friction coefficients and deformation characteristics. Sensing and actuation accuracy can also significantly impact manipulation quality. Another challenge is understanding the relationship between these factors, a specific grasping strategy, the robotic arm and the employed end-effector. Manipulation has been a central research topic within robotics for many years. Some works focus on design, i.e. specifying a gripper-object interface such that the effects of imprecise gripper placement and other confounding control-related factors are mitigated. Many universal robotic gripper designs have been considered, including 3-fingered gripper designs, anthropomorphic grippers, granular jamming end-effectors and underactuated mechanisms. While such approaches have maintained some interest, contemporary works predominantly utilise machine learning in conjunction with imaging technologies and generic force-closure end-effectors. Neural networks that utilise supervised and unsupervised learning schemes with an RGB or RGB-D input make up the bulk of publications within this field. Though many solutions have been studied, automatically generating a robust grasp configuration for objects not known a priori, remains an open-ended problem. An element of this issue relates to a lack of objective performance metrics to quantify the effectiveness of a solution—which has traditionally driven the direction of community focus by highlighting gaps in the state-of-the-art. This research employs monocular vision and deep learning to generate—and select from—a set of hypothesis grasps. A significant portion of this research relates to the process by which a final grasp is selected. Grasp synthesis is achieved by sampling the workspace using convolutional neural networks trained to recognise prospective grasp areas. Each potential pose is evaluated by the proposed method in conjunction with other input modalities—such as load-cells and an alternate perspective. To overcome human bias and build upon traditional metrics, scores are established to objectively quantify the quality of an executed grasp trial. Learning frameworks that aim to maximise for these scores are employed in the selection process to improve performance. The proposed methodology and associated metrics are empirically evaluated. A physical prototype system was constructed, employing a Dobot Magician robotic manipulator, vision enclosure, imaging system, conveyor, sensing unit and control system. Over 4,000 trials were conducted utilising 100 objects. Experimentation showed that robotic manipulation quality could be improved by 10.3% when selecting to optimise for the proposed metrics—quantified by a metric related to translational error. Trials further demonstrated a grasp success rate of 99.3% for known objects and 98.9% for objects for which a priori information is unavailable. For unknown objects, this equated to an improvement of approximately 10% relative to other similar methodologies in literature. A 5.3% reduction in grasp rate was observed when removing the metrics as selection criteria for the prototype system. The system operated at approximately 1 Hz when contemporary hardware was employed. Experimentation demonstrated that selecting a grasp pose based on the proposed metrics improved grasp rates by up to 4.6% for known objects and 2.5% for unknown objects—compared to selecting for grasp rate alone. This project was sponsored by the Richard and Mary Earle Technology Trust, the Ken and Elizabeth Powell Bursary and the Massey University Foundation. Without the financial support provided by these entities, it would not have been possible to construct the physical robotic system used for testing and experimentation. This research adds to the field of robotic manipulation, contributing to topics on grasp-induced error analysis, post-grasp error minimisation, grasp synthesis framework design and general grasp synthesis. Three journal publications and one IEEE Xplore paper have been published as a result of this research
