End-user Empowerment in the Digital Age

    Get PDF
End-user empowerment (or human empowerment) may be seen as an important aspect of a human-centric approach towards the digital economy. Despite the role of end-users has been recognized as a key element in information systems and end-user computing, empowering end-users may be seen as a next evolutionary step. This minitrack aims at advancing the understanding of what end-user empowerment really is, what the main challenges to develop end-user empowering systems are, and how end-user empowerment may be achieved in specific domains

Make it so! Jean-Luc Picard, Bart Simpson and the design of e-public services

In this paper, we report on a project applying participatory design methods to include people who have experience of social exclusion (in one form or another) in designing possible technologies for e-(local)-government services. The work was part of a project for the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister in the UK, and was concerned with ‘access tokens’ that can provide personal identification for individuals accessing public services, based on technologies such as multi-functional smartcards, flash memory sticks, mobile phone SIMs or similar devices. In particular we report on our experience using the ‘pastiche scenarios’ technique recently developed by Mark Blythe. Our findings indicate that the technique can be effective and engaging in helping people to create realistic scenarios of future technology use and highlight some possible pitfalls to consider when using this technique.</p

The World as an Interface: Exploring the Ethical Challenges of the Emerging Metaverse

Mixed reality is emerging as the next phase of personal computing. Once Apple Glass is released augmented and mixed reality will go mainstream and the impact on our behaviour will be as dramatic as when the iPhone was released. In parallel, what used to be 2D webpages are becoming 3D worlds, collectively forming a meta universe of virtual or mixed reality domains -the ‘Metaverse’. Mixed reality is precisely where the best affordances of the digital and analogue worlds should work together to create entirely new interactive learning, social and economic opportunities. In this paper we reflect on how the physical world will itself become an interface making reality even more machine-readable, click-able, and searchable. We further propose how society will need to ensure that the appropriate boundary management is in place to allow us as co-creators of the metaverse to protect our ethical rights of privacy, integrity, and autonomy

Biometric security systems: finally, a friend?

Information systems security has broadened its meaning and significance and has started to affect our lives and behaviours. The research literature identifies five related research domains: information systems, security policies, security technologies, security assurance, and security interfaces. This paper discusses some aspects of user acceptance of biometrical measurements for the purposes of authentication and access control and concludes that initial user rejection of the commonly implemented biometrics and fear of privacy abuse have been replaced by a de facto user acceptance. It hypothesizes that there is correlation between users’ awareness of the broader consequences of a particular biometric system and the level of their acceptance of the system

    ITS Teaching ASP Dot Net

Abstract: ASP dot net is one of the most widely used languages in web developing of its many advantages, so there are many lessons that explain its basics, so it should be an intelligent tutoring system that offers lessons and exercises for this language.why tutoring system? Simply because it is one-one teacher, adapts with all the individual differences of students, begins gradually with students from easier to harder level, save time for teacher and student, the student is not ashamed to make mistakes, and more. Therefore, in this paper, we describe the design of an Intelligent Tutoring System for teaching ASP dot net to help students learn ASP dot net easily and smoothly. Tutor provides beginner level in ASP dot net. Finally, we evaluated our tutor and the results were excellent by students and teacher
