    Practical design of optimal wireless metropolitan area networks: model and algorithms for OFDMA networks

    A thesis submitted to the University of Bedfordshire, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Ph.D.This thesis contributes to the study of the planning and optimisation of wireless metropolitan area networks, in particular to the access network design of OFDMAbased systems, where different parameters like base station position, antenna tilt and azimuth need to be configured during the early stages of the network life. A practical view for the solution of this problem is presented by means of the development of a novel design framework and the use of multicriteria optimisation. A further consideration of relaying and cooperative communications in the context of the design of this kind of networks is done, an area little researched. With the emergence of new technologies and services, it is very important to accurately identify the factors that affect the design of the wireless access network and define how to take them into account to achieve optimally performing and cost-efficient networks. The new features and flexibility of OFDMA networks seem particularly suited to the provision of different broadband services to metropolitan areas. However, until now, most existing efforts have been focused on the basic access capability networks. This thesis presents a way to deal with the trade-offs generated during the OFDMA access network design, and presents a service-oriented optimization framework that offers a new perspective for this process with consideration of the technical and economic factors. The introduction of relay stations in wireless metropolitan area networks will bring numerous advantages such as coverage extension and capacity enhancement due to the deployment of new cells and the reduction of distance between transmitter and receiver. However, the network designers will also face new challenges with the use of relay stations, since they involve a new source of interference and a complicated air interface; and this need to be carefully evaluated during the network design process. Contrary to the well known procedure of cellular network design over regular or hexagonal scenarios, the wireless network planning and optimization process aims to deal with the non-uniform characteristics of realistic scenarios, where the existence of hotspots, different channel characteristics for the users, or different service requirements will determine the final design of the wireless network. This thesis is structured in three main blocks covering important gaps in the existing literature in planning (efficient simulation) and optimisation. The formulation and ideas proposed in the former case can still be evaluated over regular scenarios, for the sake of simplicity, while the study of latter case needs to be done over specific scenarios that will be described when appropriate. Nevertheless, comments and conclusions are extrapolated to more general cases throughout this work. After an introduction and a description of the related work, this thesis first focuses on the study of models and algorithms for classical point-to-multipoint networks on Chapter 3, where the optimisation framework is proposed. Based on the framework, this work: - Identifies the technology-specific physical factors that affect most importantly the network system level simulation, planning and optimization process. - It demonstrates how to simplify the problem and translate it into a formal optimization routine with consideration of economic factors. - It provides the network provider, a detailed and clear description of different scenarios during the design process so that the most suitable solution can be found. Existing works on this area do not provide such a comprehensive framework. In Chapter 4: - The impact of the relay configuration on the network planning process is analysed. - A new simple and flexible scheme to integrate multihop communications in the Mobile WiMAX frame structure is proposed and evaluated. - Efficient capacity calculations that allow intensive system level simulations in a multihop environment are introduced. In Chapter 5: - An analysis of the optimisation procedure with the addition of relay stations and the derived higher complexity of the process is done. - A frequency plan procedure not found in the existing literature is proposed, which combines it with the use of the necessary frame fragmentation of in-band relay communications and cooperative procedures. - A novel joint two-step process for network planning and optimisation is proposed.     Self-Organizing Networks use cases in commercial deployments

    These measurements can be obtained from different sources, but these sources are either expensive or not applicable to any network. To solve this problem, this thesis proposes a method that uses information available in any network so that the calibration of predictive maps is converted into universal without losing accuracy with respect to current methods. Furthermore, the complexity of today's networks makes them prone to failure. To save costs, operators employ network self-healing techniques so that networks are able to self-diagnose and even self-fix when possible. Among the various failures that can occur in mobile communication networks, a common case is the existence of sectors whose radiated signal has been exchanged. This issue appears during the network roll-out when engineers accidentally cross feeders of several antennas. Currently, manual methodology is used to identify this problem. Therefore, this thesis presents an automatic system to detect these cases. Finally, special attention has been paid to the computational efficiency of the algorithms developed in this thesis since they have finally been integrated into commercial tools.Ince their origins, mobile communication networks have undergone major changes imposed by the need for networks to adapt to user demand. To do this, networks have had to increase in complexity. In turn, complexity has made networks increasingly difficult to design and maintain. To mitigate the impact of network complexity, the concept of self-organizing networks (SON) emerged. Self-organized networks aim at reducing the complexity in the design and maintenance of mobile communication networks by automating processes. Thus, three major blocks in the automation of networks are identified: self-configuration, self-optimization and self-healing. This thesis contributes to the state of the art of self-organized networks through the identification and subsequent resolution of a problem in each of the three blocks into which they are divided. With the advent of 5G networks and the speeds they promise to deliver to users, new use cases have emerged. One of these use cases is known as Fixed Wireless Access. In this type of network, the last mile of fiber is replaced by broadband radio access of mobile technologies. Until now, regarding self-configuration, greenfield design methodologies for wireless networks based on mobile communication technologies are based on the premise that users have mobility characteristics. However, in fixed wireless access networks, the antennas of the users are in fixed locations. Therefore, this thesis proposes a novel methodology for finding the optimal locations were to deploy network equipment as well as the configuration of their radio parameters in Fixed Wireless Access networks. Regarding self-optimization of networks, current algorithms make use of signal maps of the cells in the network so that the changes that these maps would experience after modifying any network parameter can be estimated. In order to obtain these maps, operators use predictive models calibrated through real network measurements

    Impact of Interdisciplinary Research on Planning, Running, and Managing Electromobility as a Smart Grid Extension

    The smart grid is concerned with energy efficiency and with the environment, being a countermeasure against the territory devastations that may originate by the fossil fuel mining industry feeding the conventional power grids. This paper deals with the integration between the electromobility and the urban power distribution network in a smart grid framework, i.e., a multi-stakeholder and multi-Internet ecosystem (Internet of Information, Internet of Energy, and Internet of Things) with edge computing capabilities supported by cloud-level services and with clean mapping between the logical and physical entities involved and their stakeholders. In particular, this paper presents some of the results obtained by us in several European projects that refer to the development of a traffic and power network co-simulation tool for electro mobility planning, platforms for recharging services, and communication and service management architectures supporting interoperability and other qualities required for the implementation of the smart grid framework.     [SPA] Esta tesis doctoral se presenta bajo la modalidad de compendio de publicaciones.[ENG] This doctoral dissertation has been presented in the form of thesis by publication. The IoT has seen a tremendous growth in the last few years. Not only due to its potential to transform societies, but also as an enabling technology for many other technological advances. Unfortunately, the IoT is a relatively recent paradigm that lacks the maturity of other well-established (not so recent) revolutions like the internet itself or Wireless Sensor Networks; upon which the IoT is built. The presented Thesis contributes to this maturation process by researching on the underlying communication mechanisms that enable a truly ubiquitous and effective IoT. As a Thesis by compilation, 5 relevant articles are introduced and discussed. Each of such articles delve into different key aspects that, in their own way, help closing the gap between what the IoT is expected to bring and what the IoT actually brings. As thoroughly commented throughout the main text, the comprehensive approach taken in this Thesis ensures that multiple angles of the same plane --the communication plane-- are analyzed and studied. From the mathematical analysis of how electromagnetic waves propagate through complex environments to the utilization of recent Machine Learning techniques, this Thesis explore a wide range of scientific and researching tools that are shown to improve the final performance of the IoT. In the first three chapters of this document, the reader will be introduced to the current context and state-of-the-art of the IoT while, at the same time, the formal objectives of this Thesis are outlined and set into such a global context. In the next five chapters, the five corresponding articles are presented and commented. For each and every of these articles: a brief abstract, a methodology summary, a highlight on the results and contributions and final conclusions are also added.     Impact of Femtocell backhaul limitation on performance of Macro-Femto HetNet

    This thesis is a techno-economical study which focuses on addressing the exponentially rising data capacity demand through network densification. The study is based on the two popular deployment strategies; Macrocellular networks and Macro-Femto heterogeneous networks, deployed in a suburban type environment with modern houses. The main aim of the dissertation is to investigate the impact of network densification on capacity, energy- and cost-efficiency of the network, while considering different femtocell backhaul connectivity limitations. The network performance is evaluated for both indoor and outdoor scenarios. A comparative analysis between the macrocellular and macro-femto network is done by increasing the density of the macrocells, femtocells and the operating frequency spectrum. The capacity is enhanced by increasing the density of the cell sites in the network but operators want to generate profit and want to adopt a cost effective solution to cater the problems. The results show that increasing the density of low-cost, low-powered femtocell access points (FAPs) in the network can solve the problem of 1000x future data capacity demand while keeping the CAPEX and OPEX of the network relatively lower than legacy pure macrocellular deployments. The deployment of the FAPs both in indoor and outdoor environments enhances the network capacity. This study helped in providing results, understanding and insight of both technical and techno-economical aspects of different mobile network deployment and densification solutions.
