Position paper on realizing smart products: challenges for Semantic Web technologies
In the rapidly developing space of novel technologies that combine sensing and semantic technologies, research on smart products has the potential of establishing a research field in itself. In this paper, we synthesize existing work in this area in order to define and characterize smart products. We then reflect on a set of challenges that semantic technologies are likely to face in this domain. Finally, in order to initiate discussion in the workshop, we sketch an initial comparison of smart products and semantic sensor networks from the perspective of knowledge

An Architectural Framework for Collaboration of Heterogeneous Communication Devices Using WAP and Mobile Device Augmented(MDA)Gateway Integration
Within the last couple of years, the challenge of displaying collaborative multimedia
information has become very important with the large diversity of communication devices
such as Personal Computers, laptops, notebooks and handheld devices. The shared data
and information may be presented with different views depending on the communication
device used by a particular collaborator. The use of various web tools (HTML, WML etc)
offers some solutions to the problem but if the target application requires more complex
features such as rich multimedia data than is manageable using HTML or WML format,
something else need to be done. In this paper, we propose a framework that integrates WAP
and MDA Gateway to support collaboration among virtual teams and nomadic workers
using heterogeneous communication devices. We then discuss an approach for augmenting
mobile device small screen capabilities with surrounding large screen display device
Management and Service-aware Networking Architectures (MANA) for Future Internet Position Paper: System Functions, Capabilities and Requirements
Future Internet (FI) research and development threads have recently been gaining momentum all over the world and as such the international race to create a new generation Internet is in full swing: GENI, Asia Future Internet, Future Internet Forum Korea, European Union Future Internet Assembly (FIA). This is a position paper identifying the research orientation with a time horizon of 10 years, together with the key challenges for the capabilities in the Management and Service-aware Networking Architectures (MANA) part of the Future Internet (FI) allowing for parallel and federated Internet(s)
Federated Embedded Systems â a review of the literature in related fields
This report is concerned with the vision of smart interconnected objects, a vision that has attracted much attention lately. In this paper, embedded, interconnected, open, and heterogeneous control systems are in focus, formally referred to as Federated Embedded Systems. To place FES into a context, a review of some related research directions is presented. This review includes such concepts as systems of systems, cyber-physical systems, ubiquitous
computing, internet of things, and multi-agent systems. Interestingly, the reviewed fields seem to overlap with each other in an increasing number of ways
The Collective Consciousness of Information Technology Research: Ways of seeing Information Technology Research: Its Objects and Territories
The collective consciousness of effective groups of researchers is characterised by shared understandings of their research object or territory. In the relatively new field of information technology research, rapid expansion and fragmentation of the territory has led to different perceptions about what constitutes information technology research. This project explores a facet of the collective consciousness of disparate groups of researchers and lays a foundation for constructing shared research objects. Making IT researchersâ ways of seeing explicit may help us understand some of the complexities associated with inter and intra disciplinary collaboration amongst research groups, and the complexities associated with technology transfer to industry. This report analyses IT research, its objects and territories, as they are constituted by IT researchers associated with the sub-disciplines of information systems, computer science and information security. A phenomenographic approach is used to elicit data from a diverse range of IT researchers in semistructured interviews. This data is analysed to show (1) the variation in meaning associated with the idea of IT research and (2) the awareness structures through which participants experience variation in ways of seeing the object and territories of IT research. An Outcome Space represents the interrelation between different ways of seeing the territory. Eight ways of seeing IT research, its objects and territories, were found: The Technology Conception, The Information Conception, The Information and Technology Conception, The Communication Conception, The Ubiquitous Conception, The Sanctioned Conception, The Dialectic Conception and The Constructed Conception. These are described in detail and illustrated with participantsâ quotes. Finally, some recommendations for further research are made
Visions, Values, and Videos: Revisiting Envisionings in Service of UbiComp Design for the Home
UbiComp has been envisioned to bring about a future dominated by calm
computing technologies making our everyday lives ever more convenient. Yet the
same vision has also attracted criticism for encouraging a solitary and passive
lifestyle. The aim of this paper is to explore and elaborate these tensions
further by examining the human values surrounding future domestic UbiComp
solutions. Drawing on envisioning and contravisioning, we probe members of the
public (N=28) through the presentation and focus group discussion of two
contrasting animated video scenarios, where one is inspired by "calm" and the
other by "engaging" visions of future UbiComp technology. By analysing the
reasoning of our participants, we identify and elaborate a number of relevant
values involved in balancing the two perspectives. In conclusion, we articulate
practically applicable takeaways in the form of a set of key design questions
and challenges.Comment: DIS'20, July 6-10, 2020, Eindhoven, Netherland
PRIMA â Privacy research through the perspective of a multidisciplinary mash up
Based on a summary description of privacy protection research within three fields of inquiry, viz. social sciences, legal science, and computer and systems sciences, we discuss multidisciplinary approaches with regard to the difficulties and the risks that they entail as well as their possible advantages. The latter include the identification of relevant perspectives of privacy, increased expressiveness in the formulation of research goals, opportunities for improved research methods, and a boost in the utility of invested research efforts
