    Exploring IT Enabled Networked Organizations in Health Care: Emerging Practices and Phrases of Development

    This paper describes an exploratory study of networked organisations in the health care sector. Based on a review of literature on networked organisations, a theoretical framework is developed and applied to three case studies. The results indicate that networked organisations in health care services are mainly driven by socio-economic and organisational conditions, in which information and communication technology plays an increasingly important facilitative role. Furthermore, the case findings indicate that networked organisations in health care develop through different phases: from pilot practices to institutionalisation. Lessons are drawn from the case studies for practice and the applicability of the theoretical framework

    eHealth has expanded hugely over the last fifteen years and continues to evolve, providing greater benefits for patients, health care professionals and providers alike. The technologies that support these systems have become increasingly more sophisticated and have progressed significantly from standard databases, used for patient records, to highly advanced Virtual Reality (VR) systems for the treatment of complex mental health illnesses. The scope of this paper is to initially explore e-Health, particularly in relation to technologies supporting the treatment and management of wellbeing in mental health. It then provides a case study of how technology in e-Health can lend itself to an application that could support and maintain the wellbeing of people with a severe mental illness. The case study uses Borderline Personality Disorder as an example, but could be applicable in many other areas, including depression, anxiety, addiction and PTSD. This type of application demonstrates how e-Health can empower the individuals using it but also potentially reducing the impact upon health care providers and services.Comment: Book chapte

    E-health Concept Development and Maturity in Literature

    Background: Electronic technologies, which used in electronic health, electronic commerce, electronic learning, and electronic banking, have wildly invaded our life. E-health is a rapidly evolving concept in many disciplines such as nursing and medicine. Objective: To identify the maturity of e-health as a concept to attain better clarity on its meaning and application. Method: Data search included CINAHL, PubMed Central, Google Scholar, Sage Publications, Scopus, Taylor and Francis, Emerald, and Wiley's databases. The concepts of search were: electronic health, e-health, and e-health concept analysis. 36 cited definitions were found in the literature related to e-health. Morse criteria were utilized by assessing four principles to evaluate the level of maturity of e-health concept: (1) the epistemological (2) logical (3) pragmatical, and (4) linguistical principles.     A Review on Provisioning Quality of Service of Wireless Telemedicine for E-Health Services

    In general, on-line medical consultation reduces time required for medical consultation induces improvement in the quality and efficiency of healthcare services. All major types of current e-health applications such as ECG, X-ray, video, diagnosis images and other common applications have been included in the scope of the study. In addition, the provision of Quality of Service (QoS) for the application of specific healthcare services in e-health, the scheme of priority for e-health services and the support of QoS in wireless networks and techniques or methods for IEEE 802.11 to guarantee the provision of QoS has also been assessed. In e-health, medical services in remote locations such as rural healthcare centers, ambulances, ships as well as home healthcare services can be supported through the applications of e-health services such as medical databases, electronic health records and the routing of text, audio, video and images. Given this, an adaptive resource allocation for a wireless network with multiple service types and multiple priorities have been proposed. For the provision of an acceptable QoS level to users of e-health services, prioritization is an important criterion in a multi-traffic network. The requirement for QoS provisioning in wireless broadband medical networks have paved the pathway for bandwidth requirements and the real-time or live transmission of medical applications. From the study, good performance of the proposed scheme has been validated by the results obtained. The proposed wireless network is capable of handling medical applications for both normal and life-threatening conditions as characterized by the level of emergencies. In addition, the bandwidth allocation and admission control algorithm for IEEE 802.16- based design specifically for wireless telemedicine/e-health services have also been presented in the study. It has been concluded that under busy traffic conditions, the proposed architecture can used as a feasible and reliable infrastructure network for telemedicine

    This paper explores the concept of Relevance as an explanatory factor to the diffusion of ITuse, or, in this paper particularly, the use of Telehealth. Relevance is the net value of performance expectancy and effort expectancy and contains both micro-relevance (i.e. here-and-now) and macro-relevance (i.e. actual goals) Following the case-study approach, two Telehealth situations were studied in Rwanda and The Netherlands. In the comparison, two more existing studies in Canada and Tanzania were included. The conclusion is that Relevance is the explanatory factor, whereas particularly micro-relevance is crucial. Without the micro-relevant occasions that initiate use, there will be no use on longer term In the cases studied the micro-relevance of knowledge-transfer was crucial. Furthermore distance determined Telehealth relevance. Practical conclusions to cases were drawn
