Challenges in Bridging Social Semantics and Formal Semantics on the Web
This paper describes several results of Wimmics, a research lab which names
stands for: web-instrumented man-machine interactions, communities, and
semantics. The approaches introduced here rely on graph-oriented knowledge
representation, reasoning and operationalization to model and support actors,
actions and interactions in web-based epistemic communities. The re-search
results are applied to support and foster interactions in online communities
and manage their resources
Preference Dissemination by Sharing Viewpoints: Simulating Serendipity
IC3K 2015 will be held in conjunction with IJCCI 2015International audienceThe Web currently stores two types of content. These contents include linked data from the semantic Web and user contributions from the social Web. Our aim is to represent simplified aspects of these contents within a unified topological model and to harvest the benefits of integrating both content types in order to prompt collective learning and knowledge discovery. In particular, we wish to capture the phenomenon of Serendipity (i.e., incidental learning) using a subjective knowledge representation formalism, in which several " viewpoints " are individually interpretable from a knowledge graph. We prove our own Viewpoints approach by evidencing the collective learning capacity enabled by our approach. To that effect, we build a simulation that disseminates knowledge with linked data and user contributions, similar to the way the Web is formed. Using a behavioral model configured to represent various Web navigation strategies, we seek to optimize the distribution of preference systems. Our results outline the most appropriate strategies for incidental learning, bringing us closer to understanding and modeling the processes involved in Serendipity. An implementation of the Viewpoints formalism kernel is available. The underlying Viewpoints model allows us to abstract and generalize our current proof of concept for the indexing of any type of data set
Semantic Interaction in Web-based Retrieval Systems : Adopting Semantic Web Technologies and Social Networking Paradigms for Interacting with Semi-structured Web Data
Existing web retrieval models for exploration and interaction with web data do not take into account semantic information, nor do they allow for new forms of interaction by employing meaningful interaction and navigation metaphors in 2D/3D. This thesis researches means for introducing a semantic dimension into the search and exploration process of web content to enable a significantly positive user experience. Therefore, an inherently dynamic view beyond single concepts and models from semantic information processing, information extraction and human-machine interaction is adopted. Essential tasks for semantic interaction such as semantic annotation, semantic mediation and semantic human-computer interaction were identified and elaborated for two general application scenarios in web retrieval: Web-based Question Answering in a knowledge-based dialogue system and semantic exploration of information spaces in 2D/3D
Social tags and linked data for ontology development: a case study in the financial domain
We describe a domain ontology development approach that
extracts domain terms from folksonomies and enrich them
with data and vocabularies from the Linked Open Data
cloud. As a result, we obtain lightweight domain ontologies
that combine the emergent knowledge of social tagging
systems with formal knowledge from Ontologies. In order to
illustrate the feasibility of our approach, we have produced
an ontology in the financial domain from tags available in
Delicious, using DBpedia, OpenCyc and UMBEL as additional
knowledge sources
Of course we share! Testing Assumptions about Social Tagging Systems
Social tagging systems have established themselves as an important part in
today's web and have attracted the interest from our research community in a
variety of investigations. The overall vision of our community is that simply
through interactions with the system, i.e., through tagging and sharing of
resources, users would contribute to building useful semantic structures as
well as resource indexes using uncontrolled vocabulary not only due to the
easy-to-use mechanics. Henceforth, a variety of assumptions about social
tagging systems have emerged, yet testing them has been difficult due to the
absence of suitable data. In this work we thoroughly investigate three
available assumptions - e.g., is a tagging system really social? - by examining
live log data gathered from the real-world public social tagging system
BibSonomy. Our empirical results indicate that while some of these assumptions
hold to a certain extent, other assumptions need to be reflected and viewed in
a very critical light. Our observations have implications for the design of
future search and other algorithms to better reflect the actual user behavior

A web-based teaching/learning environment to support collaborative knowledge construction in design
A web-based application has been developed as part of a recently completed research which proposed a conceptual framework to collect, analyze and compare different design experiences and to construct structured representations of the emerging knowledge in digital architectural design. The paper introduces the theoretical and practical development of this application as a teaching/learning environment which has significantly contributed to the development and testing of the ideas developed throughout the research. Later in the paper, the application of BLIP in two experimental (design) workshops is reported and evaluated according to the extent to which the application facilitates generation, modification and utilization of design knowledge
