    Automatic Context-Driven Inference of Engagement in HMI: A Survey

    An integral part of seamless human-human communication is engagement, the process by which two or more participants establish, maintain, and end their perceived connection. Therefore, to develop successful human-centered human-machine interaction applications, automatic engagement inference is one of the tasks required to achieve engaging interactions between humans and machines, and to make machines attuned to their users, hence enhancing user satisfaction and technology acceptance. Several factors contribute to engagement state inference, which include the interaction context and interactants' behaviours and identity. Indeed, engagement is a multi-faceted and multi-modal construct that requires high accuracy in the analysis and interpretation of contextual, verbal and non-verbal cues. Thus, the development of an automated and intelligent system that accomplishes this task has been proven to be challenging so far. This paper presents a comprehensive survey on previous work in engagement inference for human-machine interaction, entailing interdisciplinary definition, engagement components and factors, publicly available datasets, ground truth assessment, and most commonly used features and methods, serving as a guide for the development of future human-machine interaction interfaces with reliable context-aware engagement inference capability. An in-depth review across embodied and disembodied interaction modes, and an emphasis on the interaction context of which engagement perception modules are integrated sets apart the presented survey from existing surveys

    Gender stereotypes in virtual agents

    Visual, behavioural and verbal cues for gender are often used in designing virtual agents to take advantage of their cultural and stereotypical effects on the users. However, recent studies point towards a more gender-balanced view of stereotypical traits and roles in our society. This thesis is intended as an effort towards a progressive and inclusive approach for gender representations in virtual agents. The contributions are two-fold. First, in an iterative design process, representative male, female and androgynous embodied AI agents were created with few differences in their visual attributes. Second, these agents were then used to evaluate the stereotypical assumptions of gendered traits and roles in AI virtual agents. The results showed that, indeed, gender stereotypes are not as effective as previously assumed, and androgynous agents could represent a middle-ground between gendered stereotypes. The thesis findings are presented in the hope to foster discussions in virtual agent research and the frequent stereotypical use of gender representations

    Exploring Data-Driven Components of Socially Intelligent AI through Cooperative Game Paradigms

    The development of new approaches for creating more “life-like” artificial intelligence (AI) capable of natural social interaction is of interest to a number of scientific fields, from virtual reality to human–robot interaction to natural language speech systems. Yet how such “Social AI” agents might be manifested remains an open question. Previous research has shown that both behavioral factors related to the artificial agent itself as well as contextual factors beyond the agent (i.e., interaction context) play a critical role in how people perceive interactions with interactive technology. As such, there is a need for customizable agents and customizable environments that allow us to explore both sides in a simultaneous manner. To that end, we describe here the development of a cooperative game environment and Social AI using a data-driven approach, which allows us to simultaneously manipulate different components of the social interaction (both behavioral and contextual). We conducted multiple human–human and human–AI interaction experiments to better understand the components necessary for creation of a Social AI virtual avatar capable of autonomously speaking and interacting with humans in multiple languages during cooperative gameplay (in this case, a social survival video game) in context-relevant ways

    Evaluating Chatbots to Promote Users' Trust -- Practices and Open Problems

    Chatbots, the common moniker for collaborative assistants, are Artificial Intelligence (AI) software that enables people to naturally interact with them to get tasks done. Although chatbots have been studied since the dawn of AI, they have particularly caught the imagination of the public and businesses since the launch of easy-to-use and general-purpose Large Language Model-based chatbots like ChatGPT. As businesses look towards chatbots as a potential technology to engage users, who may be end customers, suppliers, or even their own employees, proper testing of chatbots is important to address and mitigate issues of trust related to service or product performance, user satisfaction and long-term unintended consequences for society. This paper reviews current practices for chatbot testing, identifies gaps as open problems in pursuit of user trust, and outlines a path forward
