Embedding Simulation Education into the Engineering Management Body of Knowledge
The American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM) established a Body of Knowledge (BoK). As simulation is of growing interest to engineers in general and to engineering managers in particular, simulation is part of this documentation of domains of interest that characterise the profession. The basis for the Body of Knowledge comprises of established and accredited curricula and additional input from practitioners of the field. As it is essential to cover the basic topics and core competences as well as application specific domain knowledge, the simulation education for engineers is categorised into topics on simulation theory and simulation application
Risk Based Urban Watershed Management Under Conflicting Objectives
Ecological impairment and flooding caused by urbanization can be expressed numerically by calculating the risks throughout the watershed (floodplain) and along the main stems of the streams. The risks can be evaluated in terms of the present and/or future. This article describes the methodologies for ascertaining the risks in the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) environment. The objectives of urban flood controls and ecological preservation/restoration of urban waters are often conflicting and, in the past, the sole emphasis on flood control led to destruction of habitat and deterioration of water quality. An optimal solution to these two problems may be achieved by linking the risks to the concepts of risk communication, risk perception, and public willingness to pay for projects leading to ecological restoration and ecologically sustainable flood control. This method is appropriate because, in each case, public funds are used and the projects require approval and backing of policy makers and stakeholders. This article briefly describes a research project that attempts to resolve the conflict between the flood protection and stream ecological preservation and restoration and suggests alternative ways of expressing benefits of urban stream flood control and restoration projects
Comparative study of selected indoor concentration from selective laser sintering process using virgin and recycled polyamide nylon (pa12)
Additive manufacturing (AM) stands out as one of the promising technologies that
have huge potential towards manufacturing industry. The study on additive manufacturing
impact on the environment and occupational exposure are attracting growing attention recently.
However, most of the researcher focus on desktop and fused deposition modelling type and less
attention given to the industrial type of AM. Usually, during the selective laser sintering process,
recycle powder will be used again to reduce cost and waste. This article compares the PM 2.5,
carbon dioxide (CO2) and total volatile organic compound (TVOC) concentration between virgin
and recycles powder using polyamide-nylon (PA12) towards indoor concentration. Four phases
of sampling involve during air sampling accordingly to the Industry Code of Practice on Indoor
Air Quality 2010 by DOSH Malaysia. It was found that PM 2.5 and CO2
concentration are mainly
generated during the pre-printing process. The recycle powder tended to appear higher compared
to virgin powder in terms of PM 2.5, and CO2. The peak value of PM 2.5 is 1452 μg/m3 and CO2
is 1218 ppm are obtained during the pre-printing process during 8 hours of sampling. TVOC
concentration from recycling powder is slightly higher during the post- printing phase where
confirm the influence of the powder cake and PA12 temperature from the printing process. In
summary, this work proves that elective laser sintering (SLS) machine operators are exposed to
a significant amount of exposure during the SLS printing process. Mitigation strategies and
personal protective equipment are suggested to reduce occupational exposure

The resource will be useful for council staff involved in climate risk assessment and planning such as asset managers, strategic planners, and corporate and community services staff.

Networked Living: a new approach to teaching introductory ICT
The course T175 Networked Living is a 300 hour, multiple media, distance learning course offered by the UK
Open University. The first presentation of the course, in 2005, attracted over 1600 students. T175 introduces
students to general concepts of information and communication technology in a range of contexts, including:
communication and identity; entertainment and information; and health, transport and government. It is an
introductory (level 1) course for a variety of bachelors’ degrees, including the BSc programmes in: Information
and Communication Technology; IT and Computing; and Technology; as well as the BEng engineering
programme. The course was designed with a focus on retention of students and preparing them for further study.
Student workload and pacing was carefully planned and there is a significant study skills component. The course
uses a range of media, including: text, audio, computer animation and other software, and a website. Active
learning is encouraged by means of activities, online quizzes, animations, spreadsheets and a learning journal.
Continuous assessment is carried out via a mix of multiple-choice assignments (to test factual and numerical
skills) and written assignments (which include elementary research into new topics). The course culminates with
a written end-of-course assessment. This includes a major reflective component, as well as more traditional
questions designed to test knowledge and understanding
Applications of lean thinking: a briefing document
This report has been put together by the Health and Care Infrastructure Research and Innovation Centre (HaCIRIC) at the University of Salford for the Department of Health.
The need for the report grew out of two main simple questions,
o Is Lean applicable in sectors other than manufacturing?
o Can the service delivery sector learn from the success of lean in manufacturing and realise the benefits of its implementation?The aim of the report is to list together examples of lean thinking as it is evidenced in the
public and private service sector. Following a review of various sources a catalogue of evidence is put together in an organised manner which demonstrates that Lean principles
and techniques, when applied rigorously and throughout an entire organization/unit, they can have a positive impact on productivity, cost, quality, and timely delivery of services
