When Hashing Met Matching: Efficient Spatio-Temporal Search for Ridesharing
Carpooling, or sharing a ride with other passengers, holds immense potential
for urban transportation. Ridesharing platforms enable such sharing of rides
using real-time data. Finding ride matches in real-time at urban scale is a
difficult combinatorial optimization task and mostly heuristic approaches are
applied. In this work, we mathematically model the problem as that of finding
near-neighbors and devise a novel efficient spatio-temporal search algorithm
based on the theory of locality sensitive hashing for Maximum Inner Product
Search (MIPS). The proposed algorithm can find near-optimal potential
matches for every ride from a pool of rides in time and space for a small . Our
algorithm can be extended in several useful and interesting ways increasing its
practical appeal. Experiments with large NY yellow taxi trip datasets show that
our algorithm consistently outperforms state-of-the-art heuristic methods
thereby proving its practical applicability
On abduction and answer generation through constrained resolution
Recently, extensions of constrained logic programming and constrained resolution for theorem proving have been introduced, that consider constraints, which are interpreted under an open world assumption. We discuss relationships between applications of these approaches for query answering in knowledge base systems on the one hand and abduction-based hypothetical reasoning on the other hand. We show both that constrained resolution can be used as an operationalization of (some limited form of) abduction and that abduction is the logical status of an answer generation process through constrained resolution, ie., it is an abductive but not a deductive form of reasoning
A Transformation-based Implementation for CLP with Qualification and Proximity
Uncertainty in logic programming has been widely investigated in the last
decades, leading to multiple extensions of the classical LP paradigm. However,
few of these are designed as extensions of the well-established and powerful
CLP scheme for Constraint Logic Programming. In a previous work we have
proposed the SQCLP (proximity-based qualified constraint logic programming)
scheme as a quite expressive extension of CLP with support for qualification
values and proximity relations as generalizations of uncertainty values and
similarity relations, respectively. In this paper we provide a transformation
technique for transforming SQCLP programs and goals into semantically
equivalent CLP programs and goals, and a practical Prolog-based implementation
of some particularly useful instances of the SQCLP scheme. We also illustrate,
by showing some simple-and working-examples, how the prototype can be
effectively used as a tool for solving problems where qualification values and
proximity relations play a key role. Intended use of SQCLP includes flexible
information retrieval applications.Comment: 49 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, preliminary version of an article of
