Prerequisites for Affective Signal Processing (ASP)

    Get PDF
Although emotions are embraced by science, their recognition has not reached a satisfying level. Through a concise overview of affect, its signals, features, and classification methods, we provide understanding for the problems encountered. Next, we identify the prerequisites for successful Affective Signal Processing: validation (e.g., mapping of constructs on signals), triangulation, a physiology-driven approach, and contributions of the signal processing community. Using these directives, a critical analysis of a real-world case is provided. This illustrates that the prerequisites can become a valuable guide for Affective Signal Processing (ASP)

Near Real-Time Sentiment and Topic Analysis of Sport Events

    Get PDF
Sport events’ media consumption patterns have started transitioning to a multi-screen paradigm, where, through multitasking, viewers are able to search for additional information about the event they are watching live, as well as contribute with their perspective of the event to other viewers. The audiovisual and multimedia industries, however, are failing to capitalize on this by not providing the sports’ teams and those in charge of the audiovisual production with insights on the final consumers perspective of sport events. As a result of this opportunity, this document focuses on presenting the development of a near real-time sentiment analysis tool and a near real-time topic analysis tool for the analysis of sports events’ related social media content that was published during the transmission of the respective events, thus enabling, in near real-time, the understanding of the sentiment of the viewers and the topics being discussed through each event.

The role of data in model building and prediction: a survey through examples

The goal of Science is to understand phenomena and systems in order to predict their development and gain control over them. In the scientific process of knowledge elaboration, a crucial role is played by models which, in the language of quantitative sciences, mean abstract mathematical or algorithmical representations. This short review discusses a few key examples from Physics, taken from dynamical systems theory, biophysics, and statistical mechanics, representing three paradigmatic procedures to build models and predictions from available data. In the case of dynamical systems we show how predictions can be obtained in a virtually model-free framework using the methods of analogues, and we briefly discuss other approaches based on machine learning methods. In cases where the complexity of systems is challenging, like in biophysics, we stress the necessity to include part of the empirical knowledge in the models to gain the minimal amount of realism. Finally, we consider many body systems where many (temporal or spatial) scales are at play-and show how to derive from data a dimensional reduction in terms of a Langevin dynamics for their slow components

A visual exploration workflow as enabler for the exploitation of Linked Open Data

Abstract. Semantically annotating and interlinking Open Data results in Linked Open Data which concisely and unambiguously describes a knowledge domain. However, the uptake of the Linked Data depends on its usefulness to non-Semantic Web experts. Failing to support data consumers to understand the added-value of Linked Data and possible exploitation opportunities could inhibit its diffusion. In this paper, we propose an interactive visual workflow for discovering and ex-ploring Linked Open Data. We implemented the workflow considering academic library metadata and carried out a qualitative evaluation. We assessed the work-flow’s potential impact on data consumers which bridges the offer: published Linked Open Data; and the demand as requests for: (i) higher quality data; and (ii) more applications that re-use data. More than 70 % of the 34 test users agreed that the workflow fulfills its goal: it facilitates non-Semantic Web experts to un-derstand the potential of Linked Open Data.

    Text Analysis of Airline Tweets

By acting as a succinct summary, keywords and key phrases can be a useful tool for swiftly assessing enormous amounts of textual material. A keyword is defined as a word that briefly and accurately characterises the subject, or an aspect of the subject, presented in a text, according to the International Encyclopaedia of Information and Library Science (Bolger et al., 1989) (Feather et al., 1996). People are more likely to complain when they are anxious, according to research (Bolger et al., 1989)(Meier et al., 2013), and moods are affected by time (Ryan et al., 2010). Due to this study, airlines will have a tool to calibrate and judge the positivity/negativity of tweets based on the day of the week, which is a topic that has yet to be researched. We want to do text and sentiment analysis on extracted airline travel tweets, taking into account when the tweet was ‘tweeted’ and if it had a good or negative impact
