    A model-theoretic analysis of Fidel-structures for mbC

    In this paper the class of Fidel-structures for the paraconsistent logic mbC is studied from the point of view of Model Theory and Category Theory. The basic point is that Fidel-structures for mbC (or mbC-structures) can be seen as first-order structures over the signature of Boolean algebras expanded by two binary predicate symbols N (for negation) and O (for the consistency connective) satisfying certain Horn sentences. This perspective allows us to consider notions and results from Model Theory in order to analyze the class of mbC-structures. Thus, substructures, union of chains, direct products, direct limits, congruences and quotient structures can be analyzed under this perspective. In particular, a Birkhoff-like representation theorem for mbC-structures as subdirect poducts in terms of subdirectly irreducible mbC-structures is obtained by adapting a general result for first-order structures due to Caicedo. Moreover, a characterization of all the subdirectly irreducible mbC-structures is also given. An alternative decomposition theorem is obtained by using the notions of weak substructure and weak isomorphism considered by Fidel for Cn-structures

    A first order representation (fo.r.) in topology is an assignment of finitary relational structures of the same type to topological spaces in such a way that homeomorphic spaces get sent to isomorphic structures. We first define the notions one f.o.r. is at least as expressive as another relative to a class of spaces and one class of spaces is definable in another relative to an f.o.r. , and prove some general statements. Following this we compare some well-known classes of spaces and first order representations. A principal result is that if X and Y are two Tichonov spaces whose posets of zero-sets are elementarily equivalent then their respective rings of bounded continuous real-valued functions satisfy the same positiveuniversal sentences. The proof of this uses the technique of constructing ultraproducts as direct limits of products in a category theoretic setting

    On the isomorphism problem of concept algebras

    Weakly dicomplemented lattices are bounded lattices equipped with two unary operations to encode a negation on {\it concepts}. They have been introduced to capture the equational theory of concept algebras \cite{Wi00}. They generalize Boolean algebras. Concept algebras are concept lattices, thus complete lattices, with a weak negation and a weak opposition. A special case of the representation problem for weakly dicomplemented lattices, posed in \cite{Kw04}, is whether complete {\wdl}s are isomorphic to concept algebras. In this contribution we give a negative answer to this question (Theorem \ref{T:main}). We also provide a new proof of a well known result due to M.H. Stone \cite{St36}, saying that {\em each Boolean algebra is a field of sets} (Corollary \ref{C:Stone}). Before these, we prove that the boundedness condition on the initial definition of {\wdl}s (Definition \ref{D:wdl}) is superfluous (Theorem \ref{T:wcl}, see also \cite{Kw09}).Comment: 15 page

    Archimedean Atomic Lattice Effect Algebras with Complete Lattice of Sharp Elements

    We study Archimedean atomic lattice effect algebras whose set of sharp elements is a complete lattice. We show properties of centers, compatibility centers and central atoms of such lattice effect algebras. Moreover, we prove that if such effect algebra EE is separable and modular then there exists a faithful state on EE. Further, if an atomic lattice effect algebra is densely embeddable into a complete lattice effect algebra E^\widehat{E} and the compatiblity center of EE is not a Boolean algebra then there exists an (o)(o)-continuous subadditive state on EE
