    Galaxy merging in MOND

    We present the results of N-body simulations of dissipationless galaxy merging in Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). For comparison, we also studied Newtonian merging between galaxies embedded in dark matter halos, with internal dynamics equivalent to the MOND systems. We found that the merging timescales are significantly longer in MOND than in Newtonian gravity with dark matter, suggesting that observational evidence of rapid merging could be difficult to explain in MOND. However, when two galaxies eventually merge, the MOND merging end-product is hardly distinguishable from the final stellar distribution of an equivalent Newtonian merger with dark matter.Comment: 5 pages, 2 color figures.     Multi-Color Luminescence Transition of Upconversion Nanocrystals via Crystal Phase Control with SiO2 for High Temperature Thermal Labels

    Upconversion nanocrystals (UCNs)-embedded microarchitectures with luminescence color transition capability and enhanced luminescence intensity under extreme conditions are suitable for developing a robust labeling system in a high-temperature thermal industrial process. However, most UCNs based labeling systems are limited by the loss of luminescence owing to the destruction of the crystalline phase or by a predetermined luminescence color without color transition capability. Herein, an unusual crystal phase transition of UCNs to a hexagonal apatite phase in the presence of SiO2 nanoparticles is reported with the enhancements of 130-fold green luminescence and 52-fold luminance as compared to that of the SiO2-free counterpart. By rationally combining this strategy with an additive color mixing method using a mask-less flow lithography technique, single to multiple luminescence color transition, scalable labeling systems with hidden letters-, and multi-luminescence colored microparticles are demonstrated for a UCNs luminescence color change-based high temperature labeling system

    Why Tangibility Matters: A Design Case Study of At-Risk Children Learning to Read and Spell

    Tangibles may be effective for reading applications. Letters can be represented as 3D physical objects. Words are spatially organized collections of letters. We explore how tangibility impacts reading and spelling acquisition for young Anglophone children who have dyslexia. We describe our theory-based design rationale and present a mixedmethods case study of eight children using our PhonoBlocks system. All children made significant gains in reading and spelling on trained and untrained (new) words, and could apply all spelling rules a month later. We discuss the design features of our system that contributed to effective learning processes, resulting in successful learning outcomes: dynamic colour cues embedded in 3D letters, which can draw attention to how letter(s) position changes their sounds; and the form of 3D tangible letters, which can enforce correct letter orientation and enable epistemic strategies in letter organization that simplify spelling tasks. We conclude with design guidelines for tangible reading systems

    How young are early-type cluster galaxies ? Quantifying the young stellar component in a rich cluster at z=0.41

    We present a new method of quantifying the mass fraction of young stars in galaxies by analyzing near-ultraviolet (NUV)-optical colors. We focus our attention on early-type cluster galaxies, whose star formation history is at present undetermined. Rest-frame NUV (F300W) and optical (F702W) images of cluster Abell 851 (z=0.41) using HST/WFPC2 allow us to determine a NUV-optical color-magnitude relation, whose slope is incompatible with a monolithic scenario for star formation at high redshift. A degeneracy between a young stellar component and its fractional mass contribution to the galaxy is found, and a photometric analysis comparing the data with the predictions for a simple two-stage star formation history is presented. The analysis shows that some of the early-type galaxies may have fractions higher than 10% of the total mass content in stars formed at z~0.5. An increased scatter is found in the color-magnitude relation at the faint end, resulting in a significant fraction of faint blue early-type systems. This would imply that less massive galaxies undergo more recent episodes of star formation, and this can be explained in terms of a positive correlation between star formation efficiency and luminosity.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters.     Combined Scheduling of Time-Triggered Plans and Priority Scheduled Task Sets

Both have their advantages and drawbacks with respect to the other, and are commonly adopted in mutual exclusion. In a previous paper, we proposed a software architecture that enables the combined and controlled execution of time-triggered plans and priority-scheduled tasks. The goal was to take advantage of the best of both approaches by providing deterministic, jitter-controlled execution of time-triggered tasks (e.g., control tasks), coexisting with a set of priority-scheduled tasks, with less demanding jitter requirements. In this paper, we briefly describe the approach, in which the time-triggered plan is executed at the highest priority level, controlled by scheduling decisions taken only at particular points in time, signalled by recurrent timing events. The rest of priority levels are used by a set of concurrent tasks scheduled by static or dynamic priorities.     First-principles investigation of graphitic carbon nitride monolayer with embedded Fe atom

    Density-functional theory calculations with spin-polarized generalized gradient approximation and Hubbard UU correction is carried out to investigate the mechanical, structural, electronic and magnetic properties of graphitic heptazine with embedded Fe\mathrm{Fe} atom under bi-axial tensile strain and applied perpendicular electric field. It was found that the binding energy of heptazine with embedded Fe\mathrm{Fe} atom system decreases as more tensile strain is applied and increases as more electric field strength is applied. Our calculations also predict a band gap at a peak value of 5 tensile strain but at expense of the structural stability of the system. The band gap opening at 5 tensile strain is due to distortion in the structure caused by the repulsive effect in the cavity between the lone pairs of edge nitrogen atoms and dxy/dx2y2\mathrm{d}_{{xy}}/\mathrm{d}_{x^2-y^2} orbital of Fe atom, hence the unoccupied pz\mathrm{p}_z-orbital is forced to shift towards higher energy. The electronic and magnetic properties of the heptazine with embedded Fe\mathrm{Fe} system under perpendicular electric field up to a peak value of 10 V/nm\mathrm{V/nm} is also well preserved despite obvious buckled structure.
