This paper discusses some methodological issues related to current research on SMS communication in Switzerland, an ambitious research project situated in the context of the international project sms4science. Thus far, the analyses of the Swiss data focus on numerous inner-linguistic features, variational aspects and language contact phenomena; each of which is of the utmost interest for multilingual Switzerland (cf. the five articles contained in this issue). In the following pages we first provide some background information about the project and the constitution of the Swiss SMS-corpus. We then present some methodological demands and problems, which are discussed on the basis of a dialogic sub-corpus. In the final paragraphs of this introductory article, we outline the state of affairs in the field of the linguistic study of SMS communication and highlight some research questions that would be of significant interest for the further analysis of the Swiss corpus

THE SHORT FORM RESHAPED: EMAIL, BLOG, SMS, AND MSN IN TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY E-PISTOLARY NOVELS

Get PDF
Brevity in literature is a complex issue: “short stories are short in various ways and for various reasons” (Friedman 1994, 18). Telling a short story or telling a story through a collection of short texts are two quite distinct narrative practices, both in designing and writing fiction. Nonetheless, the genre of the short story and that of epistolary fiction share a hybrid nature, a “power to combine richness with concision” (Shaw 1983, 11), a control over the reader, an inclination for spoken forms, and “the tension between closural and anticlosural features” (Lohafer 1994, 301). “Seen as a form which arouses a feeling of wonder at finding so much expressed within such narrow boundaries, the short story is an intrinsically witty genre which has affinities with a wide range of artistic strategies for compressing meaning” (Shaw 1983, 11). Twenty-first century e-pistolary novels in book form make the picture even more complex as they are works of fiction of varied lengths, displaying and combining various types of digital and electronic short forms enabled by technological innovation, which started in the mid-90s. Brevity for these collections of e-texts is as much a trait as a technical constraint. Before moving any further, the spelling of epistolarity with a hyphen, i.e. e-pistolarity or e-pistolary novels, is worth a digression. It is a choice intended to highlight the difference between the traditional epistolary genre—a fiction partly or entirely based on a typical paper-based exchange between two or more correspondents—and literary works that consider new forms, modes, and channels of exchange. The novels discussed in this work rely only on text typologies (e-texts) produced by means of new technologies and new means of communication, such as email both via PC and/or mobile phone, texting via mobile phone (SMS), chat services via PC first (MSN) and later via mobile, eBay entries, excerpts from forums and blogs, or online papers and magazines

Effects of SMS Texting on Academic Writing Skills of Undergraduate Students at a Public Sector University in Pakistan

The growing concern about the use of texting endangering the standard forms in language prompted the present research to determine the presence or absence of SMS features in the academic writing of the participants. Triangulation was used for data collection i.e. questionnaires for learners and educators and samples of the learners’ English written work were examined for SMS features. Simple average and ratio were used for descriptive analysis of the data. Contrary to the expectation, there were no significant evidences of these features in the sample. It seems being proficient in standard forms, these learners are context conscious and can switch to the appropriate register or style when writing formally .Thus the present study has demystified the popular belief about texting adversely affecting writing and thus destroying Standard English. Moreover, the evidences of one punctuation mark used in place of another indicate there can be other factors like carelessness or lack of knowledge of students and the lack of training, feedback or emphasis by educators or the system. So the matter of concern should be the general neglect of punctuation even out of the context of texting. It is found that the higher the exposure to the SMS, more the negative effect on the writing skills of the university students. The excessive use of this medium is leading students towards writing wrong spellings and using SMS language’s short abbreviations that are not standard in examinations and daily academic work that is very harmful in academia. A tanulmány a szövegtípusok viszonyának hálózatos értelmezési lehetőségeire mutat rá az írásbeli üzenetváltás szövegtípusainak vizsgálata révén. A kutatás során szövegtípus-tudatosságot mutató metanyelvi reflexiókat dolgozunk fel.

Facebook, Ritual and Community – Memorialising in Social Media

Social networking websites and applications have become the defining factor of online social interaction in the 2010s. Their popularity and addictiveness are based on their ability to convey all aspects of human emotions, from love to hate, from envy to happiness, from humour to sadness, from life to death. However, all social networking sites, especially Facebook (abbreviated FB), have been facing the fact that some of their users have been dying and other people want to use the websites to reminisce about and mourn their loved ones. In a study on virtual memorials conducted already more than a decade ago, communication theorists de Vries and Rutherford argued that online memorials are ‘the postmodern opportunity for ritual and remembrance’ (2004, 2). More recent studies have suggested that the internet ‘brings death back into everyday life’ (Walter et al. 2011, 295), since death and mourning cultures have undergone significant changes during the 20th century (Ariès1981 [1977], 1974; Pentikäinen 1990; Walter 1994). In this article, I will examine how commemoration and bereavement rituals (i.e. mourning rituals) are practiced on the Facebook social networking website, and how they build and maintain existential or spontaneous communitas, the transient personal experience of togetherness, at a time of loss (Turner 1995 [1969], 130–133). By mourning rituals, I am referring to the symbolised manner of communicating bereavement, care, love and affection at a time of loss. They are practices that function as socially approved symbols of emotions (Walter 1994, 77), which are intended to keep the community, friends and family of the deceased together at the time of loss (Bell 1992; Sumiala 2010; see also Durkheim 1980 [1912] and van Gennep (1960 [1909]). For example, the Finnish phrase ‘I’m sorry for your loss’ essentially means ‘I take part in your loss’, which symbolically refers to a way of taking on some of the grief and sharing the loss together with the bereaved. Flower wreaths, candles and other mementos are also familiar ways of expressing grief, especially at memorials — both online and offline. Mourning rituals in Web environments, however, are mediated by digital multimedia: images, video and text. &nbsp

"Fjärran nu invid". Mediala perspektiv på Lotta Lotass Fjärrskrift

Get PDF
Lotta Lotass Fjärrskrift is a work that makes use of three different media, a 50 meter long teleprinter strip and two filmed versions, distributed in cinemas and published on internet, which are portraying how the strip is made through a teleprinter. The purpose of this study is to investigate by the use of Lars Elleström’s theory of intermediality the different connections between the three different media versions of Fjärrskrift and how the work distance itself from the traditional book medium. Most prominently is, however, the question of what the medial implications do with the work, with the text, with the reading process and with literary public sphere. Fjärrskrift could be described as a work that puts a literary content within the media of a teleprinter, but it could also be described that it puts the teleprinter media within a literary context. The study proposes that Lotass uses media archaeological poetics, and that the mechanisms of the reading process are made visible by the defamiliarization of them. The three ways of distribution also produces an area of tension between the full accessibility of the internet version and the exclusivity of the teleprinter strip, which only exists in 100 copies

Humour support and emotive stance in comments on Korean TV Drama

Get PDF
Viewers on viki.com comment on Korean television drama series while watching: They produce timed comments tied to the timecode of the audiovisual stream. Among the functions these comments have in the community, the expression of emotive stance is central. Importantly, this includes humour support encoded in a variety of linguistic and paralinguistic ways. Our study identifies a range of humour support indicators, which allow us to find comments that are responses to humour. Accordingly, our study explores how commenters make use of the affordances of the Viki timed comment feature to linguistically and paralinguistically encode their humorous reaction to fictional events and to previous comments. We do this both quantitatively e based on a multilingual corpus of all 320,118 timed comments that accompany five Korean dramas we randomly selected (80 episodes in total), and qualitatively based on the in-depth analysis of two episodes. What we contribute is a typology and the distribution of humour support indicators used in a novel genre of technology-mediated communication as well as insights into how the viewing community collectively does humour support. Finally, we also present the semi-automatic detection of humour support as a viable strategy to objectively identify humour-relevant scenes in Korean TV drama
