    Detection and elimination of rock face vegetation from terrestrial LIDAR data using the virtual articulating conical probe algorithm

    A common use of terrestrial lidar is to conduct studies involving change detection of natural or engineered surfaces. Change detection involves many technical steps beyond the initial data acquisition: data structuring, registration, and elimination of data artifacts such as parallax errors, near-field obstructions, and vegetation. Of these, vegetation detection and elimination with terrestrial lidar scanning (TLS) presents a completely different set of issues when compared to vegetation elimination from aerial lidar scanning (ALS). With ALS, the ground footprint of the lidar laser beam is very large, and the data acquisition hardware supports multi-return waveforms. Also, the underlying surface topography is relatively smooth compared to the overlying vegetation which has a high spatial frequency. On the other hand, with most TLS systems, the width of the lidar laser beam is very small, and the data acquisition hardware supports only first-return signals. For the case where vegetation is covering a rock face, the underlying rock surface is not smooth because rock joints and sharp block edges have a high spatial frequency very similar to the overlying vegetation. Traditional ALS approaches to eliminate vegetation take advantage of the contrast in spatial frequency between the underlying ground surface and the overlying vegetation. When the ALS approach is used on vegetated rock faces, the algorithm, as expected, eliminates the vegetation, but also digitally erodes the sharp corners of the underlying rock. A new method that analyzes the slope of a surface along with relative depth and contiguity information is proposed as a way of differentiating high spatial frequency vegetative cover from similar high spatial frequency rock surfaces. This method, named the Virtual Articulating Conical Probe (VACP) algorithm, offers a solution for detection and elimination of rock face vegetation from TLS point cloud data while not affecting the geometry of the underlying rock surface.     Online Mutual Foreground Segmentation for Multispectral Stereo Videos

    The segmentation of video sequences into foreground and background regions is a low-level process commonly used in video content analysis and smart surveillance applications. Using a multispectral camera setup can improve this process by providing more diverse data to help identify objects despite adverse imaging conditions. The registration of several data sources is however not trivial if the appearance of objects produced by each sensor differs substantially. This problem is further complicated when parallax effects cannot be ignored when using close-range stereo pairs. In this work, we present a new method to simultaneously tackle multispectral segmentation and stereo registration. Using an iterative procedure, we estimate the labeling result for one problem using the provisional result of the other. Our approach is based on the alternating minimization of two energy functions that are linked through the use of dynamic priors. We rely on the integration of shape and appearance cues to find proper multispectral correspondences, and to properly segment objects in low contrast regions. We also formulate our model as a frame processing pipeline using higher order terms to improve the temporal coherence of our results.     The digital world is developing more quickly than ever. Multimedia processing and distribution, however become vulnerable issues due to the enormous quantity and significance of vital information. Therefore, extensive technologies and algorithms are required for the safe transmission of messages, images, and video files. This paper proposes a secure framework by acute integration of video summarization and image encryption. Three parts comprise the proposed cryptosystem framework. The informative frames are first extracted using an efficient and lightweight technique that make use of the color histogram-clustering (RGB-HSV) approach's processing capabilities. Each frame of a video is represented by deep features, which are based on an enhanced pre-trained Inception-v3 network. After that summary is obtain using the K-means optimal clustering algorithm. The representative keyframes then extracted using the clusters highest possible entropy nodes. Experimental validation on two well-known standard datasets demonstrates the proposed methods superiority to numerous state-of-the-art approaches. Finally, the proposed framework performs an efficient image encryption and decryption algorithm by employing a general linear group function GLn (F).     Colorrectal cancer is the third most frequently diagnosed cancer worldwide. The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be almost 100,000 new patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer and that around 50,000 people will die as a consequence of this in 2016. The increase of life expectancy and the increment of the number of diagnostic tests conducted have had a great impact on the amount of cancers being detected. Among other diagnostic tools, colonoscopy is the most prevalent. In order to help endoscopists cope with the increasing amount of tests that have to be carried out, there exists a need to develop automated tools that aid diagnosis. The characteristics of the colon make pre-processing essential to eliminate artefacts that degrade the quality of exploratory images.     Modelling on-demand preprocessing framework towards practical approach in clinical analysis of diabetic retinopathy

    Diabetic retinopathy (DR) refers to a complication of diabetes and a prime cause of vision loss in middle-aged people. A timely screening and diagnosis process can reduce the risk of blindness. Fundus imaging is mainly preferred in the clinical analysis of DR. However; the raw fundus images are usually subjected to artifacts, noise, low and varied contrast, which is very hard to process by human visual systems and automated systems. In the existing literature, many solutions are given to enhance the fundus image. However, such approaches are particular and limited to a specific objective that cannot address multiple fundus images. This paper has presented an on-demand preprocessing frame work that integrates different techniques to address geometrical issues, random noises, and comprehensive contrast enhancement solutions. The performance of each preprocessing process is evaluated against peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), and brightness is quantified in the enhanced image. The motive of this paper is to offer a flexible approach of preprocessing mechanism that can meet image enhancement needs based on different preprocessing requirements to improve the quality of fundus imaging towards early-stage diabetic retinopathy identification

    A Comprehensive Review of Vehicle Detection Techniques Under Varying Moving Cast Shadow Conditions Using Computer Vision and Deep Learning

    Design of a vision-based traffic analytic system for urban traffic video scenes has a great potential in context of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). It offers useful traffic-related insights at much lower costs compared to their conventional sensor based counterparts. However, it remains a challenging problem till today due to the complexity factors such as camera hardware constraints, camera movement, object occlusion, object speed, object resolution, traffic flow density, and lighting conditions etc. ITS has many applications including and not just limited to queue estimation, speed detection and different anomalies detection etc. All of these applications are primarily dependent on sensing vehicle presence to form some basis for analysis. Moving cast shadows of vehicles is one of the major problems that affects the vehicle detection as it can cause detection and tracking inaccuracies. Therefore, it is exceedingly important to distinguish dynamic objects from their moving cast shadows for accurate vehicle detection and recognition. This paper provides an in-depth comparative analysis of different traffic paradigm-focused conventional and state-of-the-art shadow detection and removal algorithms. Till date, there has been only one survey which highlights the shadow removal methodologies particularly for traffic paradigm. In this paper, a total of 70 research papers containing results of urban traffic scenes have been shortlisted from the last three decades to give a comprehensive overview of the work done in this area. The study reveals that the preferable way to make a comparative evaluation is to use the existing Highway I, II, and III datasets which are frequently used for qualitative or quantitative analysis of shadow detection or removal algorithms. Furthermore, the paper not only provides cues to solve moving cast shadow problems, but also suggests that even after the advent of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN)-based vehicle detection methods, the problems caused by moving cast shadows persists. Therefore, this paper proposes a hybrid approach which uses a combination of conventional and state-of-the-art techniques as a pre-processing step for shadow detection and removal before using CNN for vehicles detection. The results indicate a significant improvement in vehicle detection accuracies after using the proposed approach
