    A Primal-Dual Proximal Algorithm for Sparse Template-Based Adaptive Filtering: Application to Seismic Multiple Removal

    Unveiling meaningful geophysical information from seismic data requires to deal with both random and structured "noises". As their amplitude may be greater than signals of interest (primaries), additional prior information is especially important in performing efficient signal separation. We address here the problem of multiple reflections, caused by wave-field bouncing between layers. Since only approximate models of these phenomena are available, we propose a flexible framework for time-varying adaptive filtering of seismic signals, using sparse representations, based on inaccurate templates. We recast the joint estimation of adaptive filters and primaries in a new convex variational formulation. This approach allows us to incorporate plausible knowledge about noise statistics, data sparsity and slow filter variation in parsimony-promoting wavelet frames. The designed primal-dual algorithm solves a constrained minimization problem that alleviates standard regularization issues in finding hyperparameters. The approach demonstrates significantly good performance in low signal-to-noise ratio conditions, both for simulated and real field seismic data

    Convolutional neural network denoising autoencoders for intelligent aircraft engine gas path health signal noise filtering

    Removing noise from health signals is critical in gas path diagnostics of aircraft engines. An efficient noise filtering/denoising method should remove noise without using future data points, preserve important changes, and promote accurate diagnostics without time delay. Machine Learning (ML)-based methods are promising for high fidelity, accuracy, and computational efficiency under the motivation of Intelligent Engines. However, previous ML-based denoising methods are rarely applied in actual engineering practice because they cannot accommodate time series and cannot effectively capture important changes or are limited by the time delay problem. This paper proposes a Convolutional Neural Network Denoising Autoencoder (CNN-DAE) method to build a denoising autoencoder structure. In this structure, a convolutional operation is used to accommodate time series, and causal convolution is introduced to solve the problem of using future data points. The proposed denoising method is evaluated against NASA's Propulsion Diagnostic Method Evaluation Strategy (ProDiMES) software. It has been proved that the proposed method can accommodate time series, remove noise for improved denoising accuracy and preserve the important changes for enhanced diagnostic information. NASA's blind test case results show that Kappa Coefficient of a common diagnostic method using the processed data is 0.731 and is at least 0.046 higher than the other diagnostic methods in the open literature. Processing health signals using the proposed method would significantly promote accurate diagnostics without time delay.     Multi-PRI Signal Processing for the Terminal Doppler Weather Radar. Part I: Clutter Filtering

    Multiple pulse repetition interval (multi-PRI) transmission is part of an adaptive signal transmission and processing algorithm being developed to aggressively combat range–velocity ambiguity in weather radars. In the past, operational use of multi-PRI pulse trains has been hampered due to the difficulty in clutter filtering. This paper presents finite impulse response clutter filter designs for multi-PRI signals with excellent magnitude and phase responses. These filters provide strong suppression for use on low-elevation scans and yield low biases of velocity estimates so that accurate velocity dealiasing is possible. Specifically, the filters are designed for use in the Terminal Doppler Weather Radar (TDWR) and are shown to meet base data bias requirements equivalent to the Federal Aviation Administration’s specifications for the current TDWR clutter filters. Also an adaptive filter selection algorithm is proposed that bases its decision on clutter power estimated during an initial long-PRI surveillance scan. Simulations show that this adaptive algorithm yields satisfactory biases for reflectivity, velocity, and spectral width. Implementation of such a scheme would enable automatic elimination of anomalous propagation signals and constant adjustment to evolving ground clutter conditions, an improvement over the current TDWR clutter filtering system.United States.     Spike encoding techniques for IoT time-varying signals benchmarked on a neuromorphic classification task

    Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs), known for their potential to enable low energy consumption and computational cost, can bring significant advantages to the realm of embedded machine learning for edge applications. However, input coming from standard digital sensors must be encoded into spike trains before it can be elaborated with neuromorphic computing technologies. We present here a detailed comparison of available spike encoding techniques for the translation of time-varying signals into the event-based signal domain, tested on two different datasets both acquired through commercially available digital devices: the Free Spoken Digit dataset (FSD), consisting of 8-kHz audio files, and the WISDM dataset, composed of 20-Hz recordings of human activity through mobile and wearable inertial sensors. We propose a complete pipeline to benchmark these encoding techniques by performing time-dependent signal classification through a Spiking Convolutional Neural Network (sCNN), including a signal preprocessing step consisting of a bank of filters inspired by the human cochlea, feature extraction by production of a sonogram, transfer learning via an equivalent ANN, and model compression schemes aimed at resource optimization. The resulting performance comparison and analysis provides a powerful practical tool, empowering developers to select the most suitable coding method based on the type of data and the desired processing algorithms, and further expands the applicability of neuromorphic computational paradigms to embedded sensor systems widely employed in the IoT and industrial domains
