An Algebra of Hierarchical Graphs
We define an algebraic theory of hierarchical graphs, whose axioms characterise graph isomorphism: two terms are equated exactly when they represent the same graph. Our algebra can be understood as a high-level language for describing graphs with a node-sharing, embedding structure, and it is then well suited for defining graphical representations of software models where nesting and linking are key aspects

Satisfiability Modulo ODEs
We study SMT problems over the reals containing ordinary differential
equations. They are important for formal verification of realistic hybrid
systems and embedded software. We develop delta-complete algorithms for SMT
formulas that are purely existentially quantified, as well as exists-forall
formulas whose universal quantification is restricted to the time variables. We
demonstrate scalability of the algorithms, as implemented in our open-source
solver dReal, on SMT benchmarks with several hundred nonlinear ODEs and
variables.Comment: Published in FMCAD 201
Glueability of Resource Proof-Structures: Inverting the Taylor Expansion
A Multiplicative-Exponential Linear Logic (MELL) proof-structure can be expanded into a set of resource proof-structures: its Taylor expansion. We introduce a new criterion characterizing those sets of resource proof-structures that are part of the Taylor expansion of some MELL proof-structure, through a rewriting system acting both on resource and MELL proof-structures
Modelling Cell Cycle using Different Levels of Representation
Understanding the behaviour of biological systems requires a complex setting
of in vitro and in vivo experiments, which attracts high costs in terms of time
and resources. The use of mathematical models allows researchers to perform
computerised simulations of biological systems, which are called in silico
experiments, to attain important insights and predictions about the system
behaviour with a considerably lower cost. Computer visualisation is an
important part of this approach, since it provides a realistic representation
of the system behaviour. We define a formal methodology to model biological
systems using different levels of representation: a purely formal
representation, which we call molecular level, models the biochemical dynamics
of the system; visualisation-oriented representations, which we call visual
levels, provide views of the biological system at a higher level of
organisation and are equipped with the necessary spatial information to
generate the appropriate visualisation. We choose Spatial CLS, a formal
language belonging to the class of Calculi of Looping Sequences, as the
formalism for modelling all representation levels. We illustrate our approach
using the budding yeast cell cycle as a case study
LCF-style Platform based on Multiway Decision Graphs
AbstractThe combination of state exploration approach (mainly model checking) and deductive reasoning approach (theorem proving) promises to overcome the limitation and to enhance the capabilities of each. In this paper, we are interested in defining a platform for Multiway Decision Graphs (MDGs) in LCF-style theorem prover. We define a platform to represent the MDG operations: conjunction, disjunction, relational product and prune-by-subsumption as a set of inference rules. Based on this platform, the reachability analysis is implemented as a conversion that uses the MDG theory within the HOL theorem prover. Finally, we present some experimental results to show the performance of the MDG operations of our platform
A formal support to business and architectural design for service-oriented systems
Architectural Design Rewriting (ADR) is an approach for the design of software architectures developed within Sensoria by reconciling graph transformation and process calculi techniques. The key feature that makes ADR a suitable and expressive framework is the algebraic handling of structured graphs, which improves the support for specification, analysis and verification of service-oriented architectures and applications. We show how ADR is used as a formal ground for high-level modelling languages and approaches developed within Sensoria
