    The impact of music downloads and P2P file-sharing on the purchase of music in Canada

    This study measures the extent to which free music downloads, including the use of P2P file sharing networks, act as substitutes or complements to music purchase in markets for CDs and electronic delivered music (such as MP3). The analysis uses representative micro-data from the Canadian population. We find that those who participate in free music downloading and P2P file-sharing do not purchase more or less music compared with those who do not engaged in such activities, but that, indeed, very active file-sharers purchase more music relative to file-sharers who download fewer songs. Thus, the market substitution effect between freely acquired music and purchased music is smaller than the market creation and market segmentation effect from free music downloading. In essence, the behavioural incentives underpinning free music downloading are the effects of ‘unwilling to pay’ (market substitution), ‘hear before buying’ (market creation), ‘not wanting to buy whole album’ (market segmentation), ‘not available in the CD format or on electronic pay-sites (market creation)’

    The Original Beat: An Electronic Music Production System and Its Design

    The barrier to entry in electronic music production is high. It requires expensive, complicated software, extensive knowledge of music theory and experience with sound generation. Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) are the main tools used to piece together digital sounds and produce a complete song. While these DAWs are great for music professionals, they have a steep learning curve for beginners and they must run native on a user’s computer. For a novice to begin creating music takes much more time, eort, and money than it should. We believe anyone who is interested in creating electronic music deserves a simple way to digitize their ideas and hear results. With this idea in mind, we created a web based, co-creative system to allow beginners and pros alike to easily create electronic digital music. We outline the requirements for such a system and detail the design and architecture. We go through the specifics of the system we implemented covering the front-end, back-end, server, and generation algorithms. Finally, we will review our development time-line, examine the challenges and risks that arose when building our system, and present future improvements

    The Analogue Computer as a Voltage-Controlled Synthesiser

    This paper re-appraises the role of analogue computers within electronic and computer music and provides some pointers to future areas of research. It begins by introducing the idea of analogue computing and placing in the context of sound and music applications. This is followed by a brief examination of the classic constituents of an analogue computer, contrasting these with the typical modular voltage-controlled synthesiser. Two examples are presented, leading to a discussion on some parallels between these two technologies. This is followed by an examination of the current state-of-the-art in analogue computation and its prospects for applications in computer and electronic music

    In today\u27s world of music, everything is constantly changing alongside the progression of technology. With these developments, new musical genres have emerged and many people are still unaware of them. If you listen, you can hear these styles and genres being used in popular music. For the past several months I have jumped headfirst into the Electronic Dance Music (EDM) and rave scene. I have been documenting, observing, and researching all that it has to offer. I have been networking with people involved, be they DJs, Go-Go Dancers, Participants, Promoters, or Photographers. It has been a truly rewarding experience. Far too often, I see research about music scenes that are told only by text and the occasional grayscale photo. Music is more than just what you can hear; it is a full sensory experience. I wish to show the world of raves and Electronic Dance Music through words, photography, video, and sound.
