Low cost underwater acoustic localization
Over the course of the last decade, the cost of marine robotic platforms has
significantly decreased. In part this has lowered the barriers to entry of
exploring and monitoring larger areas of the earth's oceans. However, these
advances have been mostly focused on autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) or
shallow water autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). One of the main drivers
for high cost in the deep water domain is the challenge of localizing such
vehicles using acoustics. A low cost one-way travel time underwater ranging
system is proposed to assist in localizing deep water submersibles. The system
consists of location aware anchor buoys at the surface and underwater nodes.
This paper presents a comparison of methods together with details on the
physical implementation to allow its integration into a deep sea micro AUV
currently in development. Additional simulation results show error reductions

SUAS: A Novel Soft Underwater Artificial Skin with Capacitive Transducers and Hyperelastic Membrane
The paper presents physical modeling, design, simulations, and experimentation on a novel Soft Underwater Artificial Skin (SUAS) used as tactile sensor. The SUAS functions as an electrostatic capacitive sensor, and it is composed of a hyperelastic membrane used as external cover and oil inside it used to compensate the marine pressure. Simulation has been performed studying and modeling the behavior of the external interface of the SUAS in contact with external concentrated loads in marine environment. Experiments on the external and internal components of the SUAS have been done using two different conductive layers in oil. A first prototype has been realized using a 3D printer. The results of the paper underline how the soft materials permit better adhesion of the conductive layer to the transducers of the SUAS obtaining higher capacitance. The results here presented confirmed the first hypotheses presented in a last work and opened new ways in the large-scale underwater tactile sensor design and development. The investigations are performed in collaboration with a national Italian project named MARIS, regarding the possible extension to the underwater field of the technologies developed within the European project ROBOSKIN
Aquatic escape for micro-aerial vehicles
As our world is experiencing climate changes, we are in need of better monitoring technologies.
Most of our planet is covered with water and robots will need to move in aquatic environments.
A mobile robotic platform that possesses efficient locomotion and is capable of operating in
diverse scenarios would give us an advantage in data collection that can validate climate models,
emergency relief and experimental biological research. This field of application is the driving
vector of this robotics research which aims to understand, produce and demonstrate solutions
of aerial-aquatic autonomous vehicles.
However, small robots face major challenges in operating both in water and in air, as well as
transition between those fluids, mainly due to the difference of density of the media.
This thesis presents the developments of new aquatic locomotion strategies at small scales that
further enlarge the operational domain of conventional platforms. This comprises flight, shallow
water locomotion and the transition in-between. Their operating principles, manufacturing
methods and control methods are discussed and evaluated in detail.
I present multiple unique aerial-aquatic robots with various water escape mechanisms, spanning
over different scales. The five robotic platforms showcased share similarities that are compared.
The take-off methods are analysed carefully and the underlying physics principles put into light.
While all presented research fulfils a similar locomotion objective - i.e aerial and aquatic motion
- their relevance depends on the environmental conditions and supposed mission. As such, the
performance of each vehicle is discussed and characterised in real, relevant conditions.
A novel water-reactive fuel thruster is developed for impulsive take-off, allowing consecutive
and multiple jump-gliding from the water surface in rough conditions. At a smaller scale, the
escape of a milligram robotic bee is achieved. In addition, a new robot class is demonstrated,
that employs the same wings for flying as for passive surface sailing. This unique capability
allows the flexibility of flight to be combined with long-duration surface missions, enabling
autonomous prolonged aquatic monitoring.Open Acces
Acoustic Communication for Medical Nanorobots
Communication among microscopic robots (nanorobots) can coordinate their
activities for biomedical tasks. The feasibility of in vivo ultrasonic
communication is evaluated for micron-size robots broadcasting into various
types of tissues. Frequencies between 10MHz and 300MHz give the best tradeoff
between efficient acoustic generation and attenuation for communication over
distances of about 100 microns. Based on these results, we find power available
from ambient oxygen and glucose in the bloodstream can readily support
communication rates of about 10,000 bits/second between micron-sized robots. We
discuss techniques, such as directional acoustic beams, that can increase this
rate. The acoustic pressure fields enabling this communication are unlikely to
damage nearby tissue, and short bursts at considerably higher power could be of

Locomation strategies for amphibious robots-a review
In the past two decades, unmanned amphibious robots have proven the most promising and efficient systems ranging from scientific, military, and commercial applications. The applications like monitoring, surveillance, reconnaissance, and military combat operations require platforms to maneuver on challenging, complex, rugged terrains and diverse environments. The recent technological advancements and development in aquatic robotics and mobile robotics have facilitated a more agile, robust, and efficient amphibious robots maneuvering in multiple environments and various terrain profiles. Amphibious robot
locomotion inspired by nature, such as amphibians, offers augmented flexibility, improved adaptability, and
higher mobility over terrestrial, aquatic, and aerial mediums. In this review, amphibious robots' locomotion
mechanism designed and developed previously are consolidated, systematically The review also analyzes
the literature on amphibious robot highlighting the limitations, open research areas, recent key development
in this research field. Further development and contributions to amphibious robot locomotion, actuation, and
control can be utilized to perform specific missions in sophisticated environments, where tasks are unsafe
or hardly feasible for the divers or traditional aquatic and terrestrial robots
Development of a multi-modal tactile force sensing system for deep-sea applications
With the increasing demand for autonomy in robotic systems, there is a rising need for sensory data sensed via different modalities. In this way system states and the aspects of unstructured environments can be assessed in the most detailed fashion possible, thus providing a basis for making decisions regarding the robotâ s task. Com- pared to other sensing modalities, the sense of touch is underrepresented in todayâ s robots. That is where this thesis comes in. A tactile sensing system is developed that combines several modalities of contact sensing. The use of the tactile sense in robotic grippers is of great relevance especially for robotic systems in the deep sea. Up to now manipulation systems in master-slave control mode have been used in this area of application. An operator performing the manipulation task has to rely on visual feedback coming from cameras.
