    Comprehensive rotorcraft analysis methods

    The development and application of comprehensive rotorcraft analysis methods in the field of rotorcraft technology are described. These large scale analyses and the resulting computer programs are intended to treat the complex aeromechanical phenomena that describe the behavior of rotorcraft. They may be used to predict rotor aerodynamics, acoustic, performance, stability and control, handling qualities, loads and vibrations, structures, dynamics, and aeroelastic stability characteristics for a variety of applications including research, preliminary and detail design, and evaluation and treatment of field problems. The principal comprehensive methods developed or under development in recent years and generally available to the rotorcraft community because of US Army Aviation Research and Technology Activity (ARTA) sponsorship of all or part of the software systems are the Rotorcraft Flight Simulation (C81), Dynamic System Coupler (DYSCO), Coupled Rotor/Airframe Vibration Analysis Program (SIMVIB), Comprehensive Analytical Model of Rotorcraft Aerodynamics and Dynamics (CAMRAD), General Rotorcraft Aeromechanical Stability Program (GRASP), and Second Generation Comprehensive Helicopter Analysis System (2GCHAS)

    Finite element surface registration incorporating curvature, volume preservation, and statistical model information

    We present a novel method for nonrigid registration of 3D surfaces and images. The method can be used to register surfaces by means of their distance images, or to register medical images directly. It is formulated as a minimization problem of a sum of several terms representing the desired properties of a registration result: smoothness, volume preservation, matching of the surface, its curvature, and possible other feature images, as well as consistency with previous registration results of similar objects, represented by a statistical deformation model. While most of these concepts are already known, we present a coherent continuous formulation of these constraints, including the statistical deformation model. This continuous formulation renders the registration method independent of its discretization. The finite element discretization we present is, while independent of the registration functional, the second main contribution of this paper. The local discontinuous Galerkin method has not previously been used in image registration, and it provides an efficient and general framework to discretize each of the terms of our functional. Computational efficiency and modest memory consumption are achieved thanks to parallelization and locally adaptive mesh refinement. This allows for the first time the use of otherwise prohibitively large 3D statistical deformation models

    Tracking an elastic object with an RGB-D sensor for a pizza chef robot

    This paper presents a method to track in real-time a 3D object which undergoes large deformations such as elastic ones, and fast rigid motions, using the point cloud data provided by a RGB-D sensor. This solution would contribute to robotic humanoid manipulation purposes. Our framework relies on a prior visual segmentation of the object in the image. The segmented point cloud is then registered first in a rigid manner and then by non-rigidly fitting the mesh, based on the Finite Element Method to model elasticity and on geometrical point-to-point correspondences to compute external forces exerted on the mesh. The real-time performance of the system is demonstrated on real data involving challenging deformations and motions, for a pizza dough to be ideally manipulated by a chef robot

    Tracking Fractures of Deformable Objects in Real-Time with an RGB-D Sensor

    This paper introduces a method able to track in real-time a 3D elastic deformable objects which undergo fractures, using the point cloud data provided by an RGB-D sensor. Our framework relies on a prior visual segmentation of the object in the image. The segmented point cloud is registered by non-rigidly fitting the mesh, based on the Finite Element Method to physically model elasticity, and on geometrical point-to-point correspondences to compute external forces exerted on the mesh. Fractures are handled by processing the stress tensors computed on the mesh of the FEM model, in order to detect fracturable nodes. Local remeshing around fracturable nodes is then performed to propagate the fracture. The real-time performance of the system is demonstrated on real data involving various deformations and fractures

    The paper covers the visualization of a volume-space form of the flexible inextensible one-layer shell that is represented in the stress and strain state appearing during fastening the shell on the upper edge and its free location below the fastening border in the field of gravitational and elastic forces of the material. With no account taken of the gravitational forces, the shell is a right circular flattened cone. A developed program module can be used in designing and calculating the thin-wall shell structures during their non-linear deformation and their visualization. Visualization of the space form of the shell structure can be used for simulating various products, for instance, the cone antennae or the textile products, flexible elastic shells in the hydraulic engineering, etc.Aquí se considera la visualización de una matriz volumétrica espacial de la cascarilla cónica plegable de una sola capa. Se representa la cascarilla en el estado de estrés y tensión registrado, cuando se fija la cascarilla en el borde superior y en su localización bajo del borde de anclaje en la campo de fuerzas elásticas y de gravedad del material.     Finite element model set-up of colorectal tissue for analyzing surgical scenarios

    Finite Element Analysis (FEA) has gained an extensive application in the medical field, such as soft tissues simulations. In particular, colorectal simulations can be used to understand the interaction with the surrounding tissues, or with instruments used in surgical procedures. Although several works have been introduced considering small displacements, as a result of the forces exerted on adjacent tissues, FEA applied to colorectal surgical scenarios is still a challenge. Therefore, this work aims to provide a sensitivity analysis on three geometric models, taking in mind different bioengineering tasks. In this way, a set of simulations has been performed using three mechanical models named Linear Elastic, Hyper-Elastic with a Mooney-Rivlin material model, and Hyper-Elastic with a YEOH material model

    MHOST: An efficient finite element program for inelastic analysis of solids and structures

    An efficient finite element program for 3-D inelastic analysis of gas turbine hot section components was constructed and validated. A novel mixed iterative solution strategy is derived from the augmented Hu-Washizu variational principle in order to nodally interpolate coordinates, displacements, deformation, strains, stresses and material properties. A series of increasingly sophisticated material models incorporated in MHOST include elasticity, secant plasticity, infinitesimal and finite deformation plasticity, creep and unified viscoplastic constitutive model proposed by Walker. A library of high performance elements is built into this computer program utilizing the concepts of selective reduced integrations and independent strain interpolations. A family of efficient solution algorithms is implemented in MHOST for linear and nonlinear equation solution including the classical Newton-Raphson, modified, quasi and secant Newton methods with optional line search and the conjugate gradient method
