    A simple hybrid algorithm for improving team sport AI

    In the very popular genre of team sports games defeating the opposing AI is the main focus of the gameplay experience. However the overall quality of these games is significantly damaged because, in a lot of cases, the opposition is prone to mistakes or vulnerable to exploitation. This paper introduces an AI system which overcomes this failing through the addition of simple adaptive learning and prediction algorithms to a basic ice hockey defence. The paper shows that improvements can be made to the gameplay experience without overly increasing the implementation complexity of the system or negatively affecting its performance. The created defensive system detects patterns in the offensive tactics used against it and changes elements of its reaction accordingly; effectively adapting to attempted exploitation of repeated tactics. This is achieved using a fuzzy inference system that tracks player movement, which greatly improves variation of defender positioning, alongside an N-gram pattern recognition-based algorithm that predicts the next action of the attacking player. Analysis of implementation complexity and execution overhead shows that these techniques are not prohibitively expensive in either respect, and are therefore appropriate for use in games

    Computational Sociolinguistics: A Survey

    Language is a social phenomenon and variation is inherent to its social nature. Recently, there has been a surge of interest within the computational linguistics (CL) community in the social dimension of language. In this article we present a survey of the emerging field of "Computational Sociolinguistics" that reflects this increased interest. We aim to provide a comprehensive overview of CL research on sociolinguistic themes, featuring topics such as the relation between language and social identity, language use in social interaction and multilingual communication. Moreover, we demonstrate the potential for synergy between the research communities involved, by showing how the large-scale data-driven methods that are widely used in CL can complement existing sociolinguistic studies, and how sociolinguistics can inform and challenge the methods and assumptions employed in CL studies. We hope to convey the possible benefits of a closer collaboration between the two communities and conclude with a discussion of open challenges.Comment: To appear in Computational Linguistics.     Machine-learning-based vs. manually designed approaches to anaphor resolution: the best of two worlds

    In the last years, much effort went into the design of robust anaphor resolution algorithms. Many algorithms are based on antecedent filtering and preference strategies that are manually designed. Along a different line of research, corpus-based approaches have been investigated that employ machine-learning techniques for deriving strategies automatically. Since the knowledge-engineering effort for designing and optimizing the strategies is reduced, the latter approaches are considered particularly attractive. Since, however, the hand-coding of robust antecedent filtering strategies such as syntactic disjoint reference and agreement in person, number, and gender constitutes a once-for-all effort, the question arises whether at all they should be derived automatically. In this paper, it is investigated what might be gained by combining the best of two worlds: designing the universally valid antecedent filtering strategies manually, in a once-for-all fashion, and deriving the (potentially genre-specific) antecedent selection strategies automatically by applying machine-learning techniques. An anaphor resolution system ROSANA-ML, which follows this paradigm, is designed and implemented. Through a series of formal evaluations, it is shown that, while exhibiting additional advantages, ROSANAML reaches a performance level that compares with the performance of its manually designed ancestor ROSANA

    What makes for prize-winning television?

    We investigate the determinants of success in four international television awards festivals between 1994 and 2012. We find that countries with larger markets and greater expenditure on public broadcasting tend to win more awards, but that the degree of concentration in the market for television and rates of penetration of pay-per-view television are unrelated to success. These findings are consistent with general industrial organisation literature on quality and market size, and with media policy literature on public service broadcasting acting as a force for quality. However, we also find that ā€˜home countriesā€™ enjoy a strong advantage in these festivals, which is not consistent with festival success acting as a pure proxy for television quality
