    Monitoring using Heterogeneous Autonomous Agents.

    This dissertation studies problems involving different types of autonomous agents observing objects of interests in an area. Three types of agents are considered: mobile agents, stationary agents, and marsupial agents, i.e., agents capable of deploying other agents or being deployed themselves. Objects can be mobile or stationary. The problem of a mobile agent without fuel constraints revisiting stationary objects is formulated. Visits to objects are dictated by revisit deadlines, i.e., the maximum time that can elapse between two visits to the same object. The problem is shown to be NP-complete and heuristics are provided to generate paths for the agent. Almost periodic paths are proven to exist. The efficacy of the heuristics is shown through simulation. A variant of the problem where the agent has a finite fuel capacity and purchases fuel is treated. Almost periodic solutions to this problem are also shown to exist and an algorithm to compute the minimal cost path is provided. A problem where mobile and stationary agents cooperate to track a mobile object is formulated, shown to be NP-hard, and a heuristic is given to compute paths for the mobile agents. Optimal configurations for the stationary agents are then studied. Several methods are provided to optimally place the stationary agents; these methods are the maximization of Fisher information, the minimization of the probability of misclassification, and the minimization of the penalty incurred by the placement. A method to compute optimal revisit deadlines for the stationary agents is given. The placement methods are compared and their effectiveness shown using numerical results. The problem of two marsupial agents, one carrier and one passenger, performing a general monitoring task using a constrained optimization formulation is stated. Necessary conditions for optimal paths are provided for cases accounting for constrained release of the passenger, termination conditions for the task, as well as retrieval and constrained retrieval of the passenger. A problem involving two marsupial agents collecting information about a stationary object while avoiding detection is then formulated.     Assessment of genetic algorithm based assignment strategies for unmanned systems using the multiple traveling salesman problem with moving targets

These threats necessitate the prioritization of improved strategies for military resources and air base defense. In many scenarios, it is necessary to combat hostile unmanned systems before they reach the defensible perimeters of existing fixed-base defense systems. One solution to this problem is weaponizing friendly unmanned systems to hunt and kill hostile unmanned systems. However, the assignment and path planning of these “Hunter-Killer” systems to incoming hostile unmanned systems, in a multiple friendly versus multiple enemy scenario, presents a major challenge and can be represented by the Multiple Traveling Salesmen Problem with Moving Targets (MTSPMT). The MTSPMT is a combinatorial optimization problem and an extension of the classical Traveling Salesman Problem whereby the number of salesmen is increased and targets (cities) move with respect to time. The objective of the MTSPMT, for the application of military defense using a squadron of Hunter-Killer unmanned systems, is to determine a path that minimizes the cost required for multiple Hunter-Killer unmanned systems to successfully intercept all incoming threats. In this study, an assessment of genetic algorithm based assignment strategies for unmanned systems using the MTSPMT is performed. A number of scenarios were constructed using up to 50 hostile unmanned systems and the generated solutions were compared based on their resulting time to converge, solution fitness, and number of generations required.     Coverage & cooperation: Completing complex tasks as quickly as possible using teams of robots

    As the robotics industry grows and robots enter our homes and public spaces, they are increasingly expected to work in cooperation with each other. My thesis focuses on multirobot planning, specifically in the context of coverage robots, such as robotic lawnmowers and vacuum cleaners. Two problems unique to multirobot teams are task allocation and search. I present a task allocation algorithm which balances the workload amongst all robots in the team with the objective of minimizing the overall mission time. I also present a search algorithm which robots can use to find lost teammates. It uses a probabilistic belief of a target robot’s position to create a planning tree and then searches by following the best path in the tree. For robust multirobot coverage, I use both the task allocation and search algorithms. First the coverage region is divided into a set of small coverage tasks which minimize the number of turns the robots will need to take. These tasks are then allocated to individual robots. During the mission, robots replan with nearby robots to rebalance the workload and, once a robot has finished its tasks, it searches for teammates to help them finish their tasks faster

    A Unified Framework for Solving Multiagent Task Assignment Problems

    Multiagent task assignment problem descriptors do not fully represent the complex interactions in a multiagent domain, and algorithmic solutions vary widely depending on how the domain is represented. This issue is compounded as related research fields contain descriptors that similarly describe multiagent task assignment problems, including complex domain interactions, but generally do not provide the mechanisms needed to solve the multiagent aspect of task assignment. This research presents a unified approach to representing and solving the multiagent task assignment problem for complex problem domains. Ideas central to multiagent task allocation, project scheduling, constraint satisfaction, and coalition formation are combined to form the basis of the constrained multiagent task scheduling (CMTS) problem. Basic analysis reveals the exponential size of the solution space for a CMTS problem, approximated by O(2n(m+n)) based on the number of agents and tasks involved in a problem. The shape of the solution space is shown to contain numerous discontinuous regions due to the complexities involved in relational constraints defined between agents and tasks. The CMTS descriptor represents a wide range of classical and modern problems, such as job shop scheduling, the traveling salesman problem, vehicle routing, and cooperative multi-object tracking. Problems using the CMTS representation are solvable by a suite of algorithms, with varying degrees of suitability. Solution generating methods range from simple random scheduling to state-of-the-art biologically inspired approaches. Techniques from classical task assignment solvers are extended to handle multiagent task problems where agents can also multitask. Additional ideas are incorporated from constraint satisfaction, project scheduling, evolutionary algorithms, dynamic coalition formation, auctioning, and behavior-based robotics to highlight how different solution generation strategies apply to the complex problem space

    Constrained Task Assignment and Scheduling on Networks of Arbitrary Topology.

    This dissertation develops a framework to address centralized and distributed constrained task assignment and task scheduling problems. This framework is used to prove properties of these problems that can be exploited, develop effective solution algorithms, and to prove important properties such as correctness, completeness and optimality. The centralized task assignment and task scheduling problem treated here is expressed as a vehicle routing problem with the goal of optimizing mission time subject to mission constraints on task precedence and agent capability. The algorithm developed to solve this problem is able to coordinate vehicle (agent) timing for task completion. This class of problems is NP-hard and analytical guarantees on solution quality are often unavailable. This dissertation develops a technique for determining solution quality that can be used on a large class of problems and does not rely on traditional analytical guarantees. For distributed problems several agents must communicate to collectively solve a distributed task assignment and task scheduling problem. The distributed task assignment and task scheduling algorithms developed here allow for the optimization of constrained military missions in situations where the communication network may be incomplete and only locally known. Two problems are developed. The distributed task assignment problem incorporates communication constraints that must be satisfied; this is the Communication-Constrained Distributed Assignment Problem. A novel distributed assignment algorithm, the Stochastic Bidding Algorithm, solves this problem. The algorithm is correct, probabilistically complete, and has linear average-case time complexity. The distributed task scheduling problem addressed here is to minimize mission time subject to arbitrary predicate mission constraints; this is the Minimum-time Arbitrarily-constrained Distributed Scheduling Problem. The Optimal Distributed Non-sequential Backtracking Algorithm solves this problem. The algorithm is correct, complete, outputs time optimal schedules, and has low average-case time complexity. Separation of the task assignment and task scheduling problems is exploited here to ameliorate the effects of an incomplete communication network. The mission-modeling conditions that allow this and the benefits gained are discussed in detail.     Learn global and optimize local:A data-driven methodology for last-mile routing

    In last-mile routing, the task of finding a route is often framed as a Traveling Salesman Problem to minimize travel time and associated cost. However, solutions stemming from this approach do not match the realized paths as drivers deviate due to navigational considerations and preferences. To prescribe routes that incorporate this tacit knowledge, a data-driven model is proposed that aligns well with the hierarchical structure of delivery data wherein each stop belongs to a zone — a geographical area. First, on the global level, a zone sequence is established as a result of a minimization over a cost matrix which is a weighted combination of historical information and distances (travel times) between zones. Subsequently, within zones, sequences of stops are determined, such that, integrated with the predetermined zone sequence, a full solution is obtained. The methodology is particularly promising as it propels itself within the top-tier of submissions to the Last-Mile Routing Research Challenge while maintaining an elegant decomposition that ensures a feasible implementation into practice. The concurrence between prescribed and realized routes underpins the adequateness of a hierarchical breakdown of the problem, and the fact that drivers make a series of locally optimal decisions when navigating. Furthermore, experimenting with the balance between historical information and distance exposes that historic information is pivotal in deciding a starting zone of a route. The experiments also reveal that at the end of a route, historical information can best be discarded, making the time it takes to return to the station the primary concern.</p

    AFIT UAV Swarm Mission Planning and Simulation System

    The purpose of this research is to design and implement a comprehensive mission planning system for swarms of autonomous aerial vehicles. The system integrates several problem domains including path planning, vehicle routing, and swarm behavior. The developed system consists of a parallel, multi-objective evolutionary algorithm-based path planner, a genetic algorithm-based vehicle router, and a parallel UAV swarm simulator. Each of the system\u27s three primary components are developed on AFIT\u27s Beowulf parallel computer clusters. Novel aspects of this research include: integrating terrain following technology into a swarm model as a means of detection avoidance, combining practical problems of path planning and routing into a comprehensive mission planning strategy, and the development of a swarm behavior model with path following capabilities
