    Multi-standard programmable baseband modulator for next generation wireless communication

    Considerable research has taken place in recent times in the area of parameterization of software defined radio (SDR) architecture. Parameterization decreases the size of the software to be downloaded and also limits the hardware reconfiguration time. The present paper is based on the design and development of a programmable baseband modulator that perform the QPSK modulation schemes and as well as its other three commonly used variants to satisfy the requirement of several established 2G and 3G wireless communication standards. The proposed design has been shown to be capable of operating at a maximum data rate of 77 Mbps on Xilinx Virtex 2-Pro University field programmable gate array (FPGA) board. The pulse shaping root raised cosine (RRC) filter has been implemented using distributed arithmetic (DA) technique in the present work in order to reduce the computational complexity, and to achieve appropriate power reduction and enhanced throughput. The designed multiplier-less programmable 32-tap FIR-based RRC filter has been found to withstand a peak inter-symbol interference (ISI) distortion of -41 dB

    Dynamically reconfigurable management of energy, performance, and accuracy applied to digital signal, image, and video Processing Applications

    There is strong interest in the development of dynamically reconfigurable systems that can meet real-time constraints in energy/power-performance-accuracy (EPA/PPA). In this dissertation, I introduce a framework for implementing dynamically reconfigurable digital signal, image, and video processing systems. The basic idea is to first generate a collection of Pareto-optimal realizations in the EPA/PPA space. Dynamic EPA/PPA management is then achieved by selecting the Pareto-optimal implementations that can meet the real-time constraints. The systems are then demonstrated using Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration (DPR) and dynamic frequency control on FPGAs. The framework is demonstrated on: i) a dynamic pixel processor, ii) a dynamically reconfigurable 1-D digital filtering architecture, and iii) a dynamically reconfigurable 2-D separable digital filtering system. Efficient implementations of the pixel processor are based on the use of look-up tables and local-multiplexes to minimize FPGA resources. For the pixel-processor, different realizations are generated based on the number of input bits, the number of cores, the number of output bits, and the frequency of operation. For each parameters combination, there is a different pixel-processor realization. Pareto-optimal realizations are selected based on measurements of energy per frame, PSNR accuracy, and performance in terms of frames per second. Dynamic EPA/PPA management is demonstrated for a sequential list of real-time constraints by selecting optimal realizations and implementing using DPR and dynamic frequency control. Efficient FPGA implementations for the 1-D and 2-D FIR filters are based on the use a distributed arithmetic technique. Different realizations are generated by varying the number of coefficients, coefficient bitwidth, and output bitwidth. Pareto-optimal realizations are selected in the EPA space. Dynamic EPA management is demonstrated on the application of real-time EPA constraints on a digital video. The results suggest that the general framework can be applied to a variety of digital signal, image, and video processing systems. It is based on the use of offline-processing that is used to determine the Pareto-optimal realizations. Real-time constraints are met by selecting Pareto-optimal realizations pre-loaded in memory that are then implemented efficiently using DPR and/or dynamic frequency control

    FPGA Implementation of Higher Order FIR Filter

    The digital Finite-Impulse-Response (FIR) filters are mainly employed in digital signal processing applications. The main components of digital FIR filters designed on FPGAs are the register bank to save the samples of signals, adder to implement sum operations and multiplier for multiplication of filter coefficients to signal samples. Although, design and implementation of digital FIR filters seem simple but the design bottleneck is multiplier block for speed, power consumption and FPGA chip area occupation. The multipliers are an integral part in FIR structures and these use a large part of the chip area. This limits the number of processing elements (PE) available on the chip to realize a higher order of filter. A model is developed in the Matlab/Simulink environment to investigate the performance of the desired higher order FIR filter. An equivalent FIR filter representation is designed by the Xilinx FIR Compiler by using the exported FIR filter coefficients. The Xilinx implementation flow is completed with the help of Xilinx ISE 14.5. It is observed how the use of higher order FIR filter impacts the resource utilization of the FPGA and it’s the maximum operating frequency

    A multidimensional systolic arrays realization of LMS algorithm by a method of mapping regular algorithm onto processor array, are designed. They are based on appropriately selected 1-D systolic array filter that depends on the inner product sum systolic implementation. Various arrays may be derived that exhibit a regular arrangement of the cells (processors) and local interconnection pattern, which are important for VLSI implementation. It reduces latency time and increases the throughput rate in comparison to classical 1-D systolic arrays. The 3-D multilayered array consists of 2-D layers, which are connected with each other only by edges. Such arrays for LMS-based adaptive (FIR) filter may be opposed the fundamental requirements of fast convergence rate in most adaptive filter applications

    Design guidelines for reconfigurable multiplier blocks

    The newly proposed reconfigurable multiplier blocks offer significant savings in area over the traditional multiplier blocks for time-multiplexed digital filters or any other system where only a subset of the coefficients that can be produced by the multiplier block is needed in a given time. The basic structure comprises a multiplexer connected to at least one input of an adder/subtractor that can generate several partial products, leading to better area utilization. The multiplier block algorithm complexity of a design increases logarithmically as the number of the multiplexers is increased. Design guidelines for the maximum utilization of the reconfigurable multiplier block structures are also presented

    Multiplierless CSD techniques for high performance FPGA implementation of digital filters.

    I leverage FastCSD to develop a new, high performance iterative multiplierless structure based on a novel real-time CSD recoding, so that more zero partial products are introduced. Up to 66.7% zero partial products occur compared to 50% in the traditional modified Booth's recoding. Also, this structure reduces the non-zero partial products to a minimum. As a result, the number of arithmetic operations in the carry-save structure is reduced. Thus, an overall speed-up, as well as low-power consumption can be achieved. Furthermore, because the proposed structure involves real time CSD recoding and does not require a fixed value for the multiplier input to be known a priori, the proposed multiplier can be applied to implement digital filters with non-fixed filter coefficients, such as adaptive filters.My work is based on a dramatic new technique for converting between 2's complement and CSD number systems, and results in high-performance structures that are particularly effective for implementing adaptive systems in reconfigurable logic.My research focus is on two key ideas for improving DSP performance: (1) Develop new high performance, efficient shift-add techniques ("multiplierless") to implement the multiply-add operations without the need for a traditional multiplier structure. (2) There is a growing trend toward design prototyping and even production in FPGAs as opposed to dedicated DSP processors or ASICs; leverage this trend synergistically with the new multiplierless structures to improve performance.Implementation of digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms in hardware, such as field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), requires a large number of multipliers. Fast, low area multiply-adds have become critical in modern commercial and military DSP applications. In many contemporary real-time DSP and multimedia applications, system performance is severely impacted by the limitations of currently available speed, energy efficiency, and area requirement of an onboard silicon multiplier.I also introduce a new multi-input Canonical Signed Digit (CSD) multiplier unit, which requires fewer shift/add/subtract operations and reduced CSD number conversion overhead compared to existing techniques. This results in reduced power consumption and area requirements in the hardware implementation of DSP algorithms. Furthermore, because all the products are produced simultaneously, the multiplication speed and thus the throughput are improved. The multi-input multiplier unit is applied to implement digital filters with non-fixed filter coefficients, such as adaptive filters. The implementation cost of these digital filters can be further reduced by limiting the wordlength of the input signal with little or no sacrifice to the filter performance, which is confirmed by my simulation results. The proposed multiplier unit can also be applied to other DSP algorithms, such as digital filter banks or matrix and vector multiplications.Finally, the tradeoff between filter order and coefficient length in the design and implementation of high-performance filters in Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) is discussed. Non-minimum order FIR filters are designed for implementation using Canonical Signed Digit (CSD) multiplierless implementation techniques. By increasing the filter order, the length of the coefficients can be decreased without reducing the filter performance. Thus, an overall hardware savings can be achieved.Adaptive system implementations require real-time conversion of coefficients to Canonical Signed Digit (CSD) or similar representations to benefit from multiplierless techniques for implementing filters. Multiplierless approaches are used to reduce the hardware and increase the throughput. This dissertation introduces the first non-iterative hardware algorithm to convert 2's complement numbers to their CSD representations (FastCSD) using a fixed number of shift and logic operations. As a result, the power consumption and area requirements required for hardware implementation of DSP algorithms in which the coefficients are not known a priori can be greatly reduced. Because all CSD digits are produced simultaneously, the conversion speed and thus the throughput are improved when compared to overlap-and-scan techniques such as Booth's recoding
