Cooperative Symbol-Based Signaling for Networks with Multiple Relays
Wireless channels suffer from severe inherent impairments and hence
reliable and high data rate wireless transmission is particularly challenging to
achieve. Fortunately, using multiple antennae improves performance in wireless
transmission by providing space diversity, spatial multiplexing, and power gains.
However, in wireless ad-hoc networks multiple antennae may not be acceptable
due to limitations in size, cost, and hardware complexity. As a result, cooperative
relaying strategies have attracted considerable attention because of their abilities
to take advantage of multi-antenna by using multiple single-antenna relays.
This study is to explore cooperative signaling for different relay networks,
such as multi-hop relay networks formed by multiple single-antenna relays and
multi-stage relay networks formed by multiple relaying stages with each stage
holding several single-antenna relays. The main contribution of this study is the
development of a new relaying scheme for networks using symbol-level
modulation, such as binary phase shift keying (BPSK) and quadrature phase shift
keying (QPSK). We also analyze effects of this newly developed scheme when it
is used with space-time coding in a multi-stage relay network. Simulation results
demonstrate that the new scheme outperforms previously proposed schemes:
amplify-and-forward (AF) scheme and decode-and-forward (DF) scheme
Hybrid turbo FEC/ARQ systems and distributed space-time coding for cooperative transmission
Cooperative transmission can be seen as a "virtual" MIMO system, where the
multiple transmit antennas are in fact implemented distributed by the antennas both at the source and the relay terminal. Depending on the system design, diversity/multiplexing gains
are achievable. This design involves the definition of the type of retransmission (incremental
redundancy, repetition coding), the design of the distributed space-time codes, the error
correcting scheme, the operation of the relay (decode&forward or amplify&forward) and the
number of antennas at each terminal. Proposed schemes are evaluated in different conditions
in combination with forward error correcting codes (FEC), both for linear and near-optimum
(sphere decoder) receivers, for its possible implementation in downlink high speed packet
services of cellular networks. Results show the benefits of coded cooperation over direct
transmission in terms of increased throughput. It is shown that multiplexing gains are
observed even if the mobile station features a single antenna, provided that cell wide reuse of the relay radio resource is possible
Efficient Power Allocation Schemes for Hybrid Decode-Amplify-Forward Relay Based Wireless Cooperative Network
Cooperative communication in various wireless domains, such as cellular networks, sensor networks and wireless ad hoc networks, has gained significant interest recently. In cooperative network, relays between the source and the destination, form a virtual MIMO that creates spatial diversity at the destination, which overcomes the fading effect of wireless channels. Such relay assisted schemes have potential to increase the channel capacity and network coverage. Most current research on cooperative communication are focused broadly on efficient protocol design and analysis, resource allocation, relay selection and cross layer optimization. The first part of this research aims at introducing hybrid decode-amplify-forward (HDAF) relaying in a distributed Alamouti coded cooperative network. Performance of such adaptive relaying scheme in terms of symbol error rate (SER), outage probability and average channel capacity is derived theoretically and verified through simulation based study. This work is further extended to a generalized multi HDAF relaying cooperative frame work. Various efficient power allocation schemes such as maximized channel capacity based, minimized SER based and total power minimization based are proposed and their superiority in performance over the existing equal power allocation scheme is demonstrated in the simulation results. Due to the broadcast nature of wireless transmission, information privacy in wireless networks becomes a critical issue. In the context of physical layer security, the role of multi HDAF relaying based cooperative model with control jamming and multiple eavesdroppers is explored in the second part of the research. Performance evaluation parameters such as secrecy rate, secrecy outage and intercept probability are derived theoretically. Further the importance of the proposed power allocation schemes in enhancing the secrecy performance of the network in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers is studied in detail through simulation based study and analysis. For all the proposed power allocation schemes in this research, the optimization problems are defined under total power constraint and are solved using Lagrange multiplier method and also evolutionary algorithms such as Differential evolution and Invasive Weed Optimization are employed. Monte Carlo simulation based study is adopted throughout the research. It is concluded that HDAF relaying based wireless cooperative network with optimal power allocation schemes offers improved and reliable performance compared to conventional amplify forward and decode forward relaying schemes. Above research contributions will be applicable for future generation wireless cooperative networks
Distributed space-time coding including the golden code with application in cooperative networks
This thesis presents new methodologies to improve performance of wireless cooperative networks using the Golden Code. As a form of space-time coding, the Golden Code can achieve diversity-multiplexing tradeoff and the data rate can be twice that of the Alamouti code. In practice, however, asynchronism between relay nodes may reduce performance and channel quality can be degraded from certain antennas.
Firstly, a simple offset transmission scheme, which employs full interference cancellation (FIC) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), is enhanced through the use of four relay nodes and receiver processing to mitigate asynchronism. Then, the potential reduction in diversity gain due to the dependent channel matrix elements in the distributed Golden Code transmission, and the rate penalty of multihop transmission, are mitigated by relay selection based on two-way transmission. The Golden Code is also implemented in an asynchronous one-way relay network over frequency flat and selective channels, and a simple approach to overcome asynchronism is proposed. In one-way communication with computationally efficient sphere decoding, the maximum of the channel parameter means is shown to achieve the best performance for the relay selection through bit error rate simulations.
Secondly, to reduce the cost of hardware when multiple antennas are available in a cooperative network, multi-antenna selection is exploited. In this context, maximum-sum transmit antenna selection is proposed. End-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is calculated and outage probability analysis is performed when the links are modelled as Rayleigh fading frequency flat channels. The numerical results support the analysis and for a MIMO system
maximum-sum selection is shown to outperform maximum-minimum selection. Additionally, pairwise error probability (PEP) analysis is performed for maximum-sum transmit antenna selection with the Golden Code and the diversity order is obtained.
Finally, with the assumption of fibre-connected multiple antennas with finite buffers, multiple-antenna selection is implemented on the basis of maximum-sum antenna selection. Frequency flat Rayleigh fading channels are assumed together with a decode and forward transmission scheme. Outage probability analysis is performed by exploiting the steady-state stationarity of a Markov Chain model
Distributed Quasi-Orthogonal Space-Time coding in wireless cooperative relay networks
Cooperative diversity provides a new paradigm in robust wireless re- lay networks that leverages Space-Time (ST) processing techniques to combat the effects of fading. Distributing the encoding over multiple relays that potentially observe uncorrelated channels to a destination terminal has demonstrated promising results in extending range, data- rates and transmit power utilization. Specifically, Space Time Block Codes (STBCs) based on orthogonal designs have proven extremely popular at exploiting spatial diversity through simple distributed pro- cessing without channel knowledge at the relaying terminals. This thesis aims at extending further the extensive design and analysis in relay networks based on orthogonal designs in the context of Quasi- Orthogonal Space Time Block Codes (QOSTBCs).
The characterization of Quasi-Orthogonal MIMO channels for cooper- ative networks is performed under Ergodic and Non-Ergodic channel conditions. Specific to cooperative diversity, the sub-channels are as- sumed to observe different shadowing conditions as opposed to the traditional co-located communication system. Under Ergodic chan- nel assumptions novel closed-form solutions for cooperative channel capacity under the constraint of distributed-QOSTBC processing are presented. This analysis is extended to yield closed-form approx- imate expressions and their utility is verified through simulations. The effective use of partial feedback to orthogonalize the QOSTBC is examined and significant gains under specific channel conditions are demonstrated.
Distributed systems cooperating over the network introduce chal- lenges in synchronization. Without extensive network management
it is difficult to synchronize all the nodes participating in the relaying between source and destination terminals. Based on QOSTBC tech- niques simple encoding strategies are introduced that provide compa- rable throughput to schemes under synchronous conditions with neg- ligible overhead in processing throughout the protocol. Both mutli- carrier and single-carrier schemes are developed to enable the flexi- bility to limit Peak-to-Average-Power-Ratio (PAPR) and reduce the Radio Frequency (RF) requirements of the relaying terminals.
The insights gained in asynchronous design in flat-fading cooperative channels are then extended to broadband networks over frequency- selective channels where the novel application of QOSTBCs are used in distributed-Space-Time-Frequency (STF) coding. Specifically, cod- ing schemes are presented that extract both spatial and mutli-path diversity offered by the cooperative Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) channel. To provide maximum flexibility the proposed schemes are adapted to facilitate both Decode-and-Forward (DF) and Amplify- and-Forward (AF) relaying. In-depth Pairwise-Error-Probability (PEP) analysis provides distinct design specifications which tailor the distributed- STF code to maximize the diversity and coding gain offered under the
DF and AF protocols.
Numerical simulation are used extensively to confirm the validity of the proposed cooperative schemes. The analytical and numerical re- sults demonstrate the effective use of QOSTBC over orthogonal tech- niques in a wide range of channel conditions
Data-precoded algorithm for multiple-relay-assisted systems
A data-precoded relay-assisted (RA) scheme is proposed for a system cooperating with multiple relay nodes (RNs), each equipped with either a single-antenna or a two-antenna array. The classical RA systems using distributed space-time/frequency coding algorithms, because of the half-duplex constraint at the relays, require the use of a higher order constellation than in the case of a continuous link transmission from the base station to the user terminal. This implies a penalty in the power efficiency. The proposed precoding algorithm exploits the relation between QPSK and 4 L -QAM, by alternately transmitting through L relays, achieving full diversity, while significantly reducing power penalty. This algorithm explores the situations where a direct path (DP) is not available or has poor quality, and it is a promising solution to extend coverage or increase system capacity. We present the analytical derivation of the gain obtained with the data-precoded algorithm in comparison with distributed space-frequency block code (SFBC) ones. Furthermore, analysis of the pairwise error probability of the proposed algorithm is derived and confirmed with numerical results. We evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme and compare it relatively to the equivalent distributed SFBC scheme employing 16-QAM and non-cooperative schemes, for several link quality scenarios and scheme configurations, highlighting the advantages of the proposed scheme
Analysis and Ad-hoc Networking Solutions for Cooperative Relaying Systems
Users of mobile networks are increasingly demanding higher data rates from
their service providers. To cater to this demand, various signal processing
and networking algorithms have been proposed. Amongst them the multiple
input multiple output (MIMO) scheme of wireless communications is one of
the most promising options. However, due to certain physical restrictions,
e.g., size, it is not possible for many devices to have multiple antennas
on them. Also, most of the devices currently in use are single-antenna
devices. Such devices can make use of the MIMO scheme by employing
cooperative MIMO methods. This involves nearby nodes utilizing the antennas
of each other to form virtual antenna arrays (VAAs). Nodes with limited
communication ranges can further employ multi-hopping to be able to
communicate with far away nodes. However, an ad-hoc communications scheme
with cooperative MIMO multi-hopping can be challenging to implement because
of its de-centralized nature and lack of a centralized controling entity
such as a base-station. This thesis looks at methods to alleviate the
problems faced by such networks. In the first part of this thesis, we look,
analytically, at the relaying scheme under consideration and derive closed
form expressions for certain performance measures (signal to noise ratio
(SNR), symbol error rate (SER), bit error rate (BER), and capacity) for the
co-located and cooperative multiple antenna schemes in different relaying
configurations (amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward) and different
antenna configurations (single input single output (SISO), single input
multiple output (SIMO) and MIMO). These expressions show the importance of
reducing the number of hops in multi-hop communications to achieve a better
performance. We can also see the impact of different antenna configurations
and different transmit powers on the number of hops through these
simplified expressions. We also look at the impact of synchronization errors
on the cooperative MIMO communications scheme and derive a lower bound of
the SINR and an expression for the BER in the high SNR regime. These
expressions can help the network designers to ensure that the quality of
service (QoS) is satisfied even in the worst-case scenarios. In the second
part of the thesis we present some algorithms developed by us to help the
set-up and functioning of cluster-based ad-hoc networks that employ
cooperative relaying. We present a clustering algorithm that takes into
account the battery status of nodes in order to ensure a longer network
life-time. We also present a routing mechanism that is tailored for use in
cooperative MIMO multi-hop relaying. The benefits of both schemes are shown
through simulations.A method to handle data in ad-hoc networks using
distributed hash tables (DHTs) is also presented. Moreover, we also present
a physical layer security mechanism for multi-hop relaying. We also analyze
the physical layer security mechanism for the cooperative MIMO scheme. This
analysis shows that the cooperative MIMO scheme is more beneficial than
co-located MIMO in terms of the information theoretic limits of the
physical layer security.Nutzer mobiler Netzwerke fordern zunehmend höhere Datenraten von ihren
Dienstleistern.
