Conclave: secure multi-party computation on big data (extended TR)
Secure Multi-Party Computation (MPC) allows mutually distrusting parties to
run joint computations without revealing private data. Current MPC algorithms
scale poorly with data size, which makes MPC on "big data" prohibitively slow
and inhibits its practical use.
Many relational analytics queries can maintain MPC's end-to-end security
guarantee without using cryptographic MPC techniques for all operations.
Conclave is a query compiler that accelerates such queries by transforming them
into a combination of data-parallel, local cleartext processing and small MPC
steps. When parties trust others with specific subsets of the data, Conclave
applies new hybrid MPC-cleartext protocols to run additional steps outside of
MPC and improve scalability further.
Our Conclave prototype generates code for cleartext processing in Python and
Spark, and for secure MPC using the Sharemind and Obliv-C frameworks. Conclave
scales to data sets between three and six orders of magnitude larger than
state-of-the-art MPC frameworks support on their own. Thanks to its hybrid
protocols, Conclave also substantially outperforms SMCQL, the most similar

A Survey on IT-Techniques for a Dynamic Emergency Management in Large Infrastructures
This deliverable is a survey on the IT techniques that are relevant to the three use cases of the project EMILI. It describes the state-of-the-art in four complementary IT areas: Data cleansing, supervisory control and data acquisition, wireless sensor networks and complex event processing. Even though the deliverableâs authors have tried to avoid a too technical language and have tried to explain every concept referred to, the deliverable might seem rather technical to readers so far little familiar with the techniques it describes
Vectorwise: Beyond Column Stores

architecture, customer reactions to the product and its future research and development roadmap. One take-away from this story is that the novelty in Vectorwise is much more than just column-storage:
it boasts many query processing innovations in its vectorized execution model, and an adaptive mixed
row/column data storage model with indexing support tailored to analytical workloads. Another one is that there is a long road from research prototype to commercial product, though database research continues to achieve a strong innovative inďŹuence on product development
CHORUS Deliverable 2.1: State of the Art on Multimedia Search Engines
Based on the information provided by European projects and national initiatives related to multimedia search as well as domains experts that participated in the CHORUS Think-thanks and workshops, this document reports on the state of the art related to multimedia content search from, a technical, and socio-economic perspective.
The technical perspective includes an up to date view on content based indexing and retrieval technologies, multimedia search in the context of mobile devices and peer-to-peer networks, and an overview of current evaluation and benchmark inititiatives to measure the performance of multimedia search engines.
From a socio-economic perspective we inventorize the impact and legal consequences of these technical advances and point out future directions of research
CHORUS Deliverable 2.2: Second report - identification of multi-disciplinary key issues for gap analysis toward EU multimedia search engines roadmap
After addressing the state-of-the-art during the first year of Chorus and establishing the existing landscape in
multimedia search engines, we have identified and analyzed gaps within European research effort during our second year.
In this period we focused on three directions, notably technological issues, user-centred issues and use-cases and socio-
economic and legal aspects. These were assessed by two central studies: firstly, a concerted vision of functional breakdown
of generic multimedia search engine, and secondly, a representative use-cases descriptions with the related discussion on
requirement for technological challenges. Both studies have been carried out in cooperation and consultation with the
community at large through EC concertation meetings (multimedia search engines cluster), several meetings with our
Think-Tank, presentations in international conferences, and surveys addressed to EU projects coordinators as well as
National initiatives coordinators. Based on the obtained feedback we identified two types of gaps, namely core
technological gaps that involve research challenges, and âenablersâ, which are not necessarily technical research
challenges, but have impact on innovation progress. New socio-economic trends are presented as well as emerging legal
challenges
Twelve Theses on Reactive Rules for the Web
Reactivity, the ability to detect and react to events, is an
essential functionality in many information systems. In particular, Web
systems such as online marketplaces, adaptive (e.g., recommender) systems,
and Web services, react to events such as Web page updates or
data posted to a server.
This article investigates issues of relevance in designing high-level programming
languages dedicated to reactivity on the Web. It presents
twelve theses on features desirable for a language of reactive rules tuned
to programming Web and Semantic Web applications
