The purpose of these workshops is to address computational issues in the analysis, design, and testing of flexible multibody control systems for aerospace applications. The intention in holding these workshops is to bring together users, researchers, and developers of computational tools in aerospace systems (spacecraft, space robotics, aerospace transportation vehicles, etc.) for the purpose of exchanging ideas on the state of the art in computational tools and techniques

    Design of high-performance legged robots: A case study on a hopping and balancing robot

    The availability and capabilities of present-day technology suggest that legged robots should be able to physically outperform their biological counterparts. This thesis revolves around the philosophy that the observed opposite is caused by over-complexity in legged robot design, which is believed to substantially suppress design for high-performance. In this dissertation a design philosophy is elaborated with a focus on simple but high performance design. This philosophy is governed by various key points, including holistic design, technology-inspired design, machine and behaviour co-design and design at the performance envelope. This design philosophy also focuses on improving progress in robot design, which is inevitably complicated by the aspire for high performance. It includes an approach of iterative design by trial-and-error, which is believed to accelerate robot design through experience. This thesis mainly focuses on the case study of Skippy, a fully autonomous monopedal balancing and hopping robot. Skippy is maximally simple in having only two actuators, which is the minimum number of actuators required to control a robot in 3D. Despite its simplicity, it is challenged with a versatile set of high-performance activities, ranging from balancing to reaching record jump heights, to surviving crashes from several meters and getting up unaided after a crash, while being built from off-the-shelf technology. This thesis has contributed to the detailed mechanical design of Skippy and its optimisations that abide the design philosophy, and has resulted in a robust and realistic design that is able to reach a record jump height of 3.8m. Skippy is also an example of iterative design through trial-and-error, which has lead to the successful design and creation of the balancing-only precursor Tippy. High-performance balancing has been successfully demonstrated on Tippy, using a recently developed balancing algorithm that combines the objective of tracking a desired position command with balancing, as required for preparing hopping motions. This thesis has furthermore contributed to several ideas and theories on Skippy's road of completion, which are also useful for designing other high-performance robots. These contributions include (1) the introduction of an actuator design criterion to maximize the physical balance recovery of a simple balancing machine, (2) a generalization of the centre of percussion for placement of components that are sensitive to shock and (3) algebraic modelling of a non-linear high-gravimetric energy density compression spring with a regressive stress-strain profile. The activities performed and the results achieved have been proven to be valuable, however they have also delayed the actual creation of Skippy itself. A possible explanation for this happening is that Skippy's requirements and objectives were too ambitious, for which many complications were encountered in the decision-making progress of the iterative design strategy, involving trade-offs between exercising trial-and-error, elaborate simulation studies and the development of above-mentioned new theories. Nevertheless, from (1) the resulting realistic design of Skippy, (2) the successful creation and demonstrations of Tippy and (3) the contributed theories for high-performance robot design, it can be concluded that the adopted design philosophy has been generally successful. Through the case study design project of the hopping and balancing robot Skippy, it is shown that proper design for high physical performance (1) can indeed lead to a robot design that is capable of physically outperforming humans and animals and (2) is already very challenging for a robot that is intended to be very simple

    Design, Modelling and Fabrication of a Robotic Retractor for Colorectal Surgery

    PhDThis research presents the design, fabrication and controller development of a robotic retractor which driven by a robotic manipulator for laparoscopic colorectal surgery. The system consists of a dual-head fan retractor and a manipulator. The dual-head fan retractor comprises two fan devices, retractor wrist, tubular element and handle. The fan device is facilitated with a fan end-effector, an expansion mechanism and a clutchspring mechanism. Two fan devices have been used in the system to provide an anthropoid hand-holding shape which is specifically advanced for surgical purpose because intestine tends to slip when subject to disturbance and the anthropoid handholding shape can effectively halt that. One of the two fan devices is rotatable which makes the anthropoid hand-holding shape achievable. The retractor wrist possesses a triggering device, based on clutch-spring mechanism, for rotating the rotatable fan device. The clutch-spring mechanism has an impact on rotating the palms of the fan devices. In front of the handle, it is the so called front body which includes two fan devices, retractor wrist and tubular element. The front body can be controlled and is motorised using two motors fixed to the tubular element. The dual-head fan retractor is modelled in SolidWorks, and stress analysis of the retractor has been carried out by SolidWorks Simulation. Then, the mathematical model of the fan blades is developed. A 3-joint manipulator is modelled and controlled by a computed torque PD control approach as part of an investigative study to fit such a system to the retractor for robotic manipulation. Based on this investigation, the retractor is attached to a 2-joint robotic manipulator which has one rotational joint and a prismatic joint. This manipulator is mathematically modelled, and the dynamic equations are obtained. Control methods from Azenha and Khatib are simulated and compared. Azenha & Machado’s method has fewer input parameters and less oscillation when utilising the same control gains. Timeoptimal control is then successfully developed for the above 2-joint manipulator. This study clearly indicates that a retractor to be used for laparoscopic surgery can be effectively controlled using a multi-joints and multi degrees of freedom robotic manipulator

The series of books on Advances in Robot Kinematics (ARK) report the latest achievement in this field. ARK has a long history as the first book was published in 1991 and since then new issues have been published every 2 years. Each book is the follow-up of a single-track symposium in which the participants exchange their results and opinions in a meeting that bring together the best of world’s researchers and scientists together with young students. Since 1992 the ARK symposia have come under the patronage of the International Federation for the Promotion of Machine Science-IFToMM.This book is the 13th in the series and is the result of peer-review process intended to select the newest and most original achievements in this field. For the first time the articles of this symposium will be published in a green open-access archive to favor free dissemination of the results.     The application of dexterous robotic hands out of research laboratories has been limited by the intrinsic complexity that these devices present. This is directly reflected as an economically unreasonable cost and a low overall reliability. Within the research reported in this thesis it is shown how the problem of complexity in the design of robotic hands can be tackled, taking advantage of modern technologies (i.e. rapid prototyping), leading to innovative concepts for the design of the mechanical structure, the actuation and sensory systems. The solutions adopted drastically reduce the prototyping and production costs and increase the reliability, reducing the number of parts required and averaging their single reliability factors. In order to get guidelines for the design process, the problem of robotic grasp and manipulation by a dual arm/hand system has been reviewed. In this way, the requirements that should be fulfilled at hardware level to guarantee successful execution of the task has been highlighted. The contribution of this research from the manipulation planning side focuses on the redundancy resolution that arise in the execution of the task in a dexterous arm/hand system. In literature the problem of coordination of arm and hand during manipulation of an object has been widely analyzed in theory but often experimentally demonstrated in simplified robotic setup. Our aim is to cover the lack in the study of this topic and experimentally evaluate it in a complex system as a anthropomorphic arm hand system

    Efficient Computation of Articulated-Body Inertias Using Successive Axial Screws

    The articulated-body (AB) algorithm for dynamic simulation of chains of rigid bodies was developed by Featherstone [1]. The most costly step in this algorithm is the computation of the AB inertias at each link which involves a spatial (6 x 6) congruence transformation. The amount of computation required is closely coupled to the kinematic modeling technique used. This paper examines this computation in detail and presents an efficient step-bystep procedure for its evaluation in a serial chain with revolute and prismatic joints using modified Denavit-Hartenberg parameters for modeling the kinematics. The result is a very efficient procedure using successive axial screws that reduces the computational requirements of the AB algorithm by about 15% from results obtained by Brandl, Johanni, and Otter [2]. The procedure developed defines a general approach and can be used to improve the efficiency of spatial congruence transformations of other types of matrices, such as spatial rigid-body inertias (used in the Composite Rigid-Body simulation algorithm [3, 4])
