    Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is fast emerging as the preferred information transfer technique for future Broadband Integrated Services Digital Networks (BISON), offering the advantages of both the simplicity of time division circuit switched techniques and the flexibility of packet switched techniques. ATM networks with their inherent rate flexibility offer new opportunities for the efficient transmission of real time Variable Bit Rate (VBR) services over such networks. Since most services are VBR in nature when efficiently coded, this could in turn lead to a more efficient utilisation of network resources through statistical multiplexing. Video communication is typical of such a service and could benefit significantly if supported with VBR video over ATM networks. [Continues.

    Modeling Adaptive Middleware and Its Applications to Military Tactical Datalinks

    Open systems solutions and techniques have become the de facto standard for achieving interoperability between disparate, large-scale, legacy software systems. A key technology among open systems solutions and techniques is middleware. Middleware, in general, is used to isolate applications from dependencies introduced by hardware, operating systems, and other low-level aspects of system architectures. While middleware approaches are or will be integrated into operational military systems, many open questions exist about the appropriate areas to applying middleware. Adaptive middleware is middleware that provides an application with a run-time adaptation strategy, based upon system-level interfaces and properties. Adaptive middleware is an example of an active applied research area. Adaptive middleware is being developed and applied to meet the ever-increasing challenges set forth by the next generation of mission-critical distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems. The driving force behind many next-generation DRE systems is the establishment of QoS requirements typically associated with workloads that vary dynamically. The Weapon System Open Architecture (WSOA), an adaptive middleware platform developed by Boeing, is modeled as a part of this research to determine the scalability of the architecture. The WSOA adaptive middleware was previously flight-tested with one tactical node, and the test results represent the performance baseline the architecture. The WSOA adaptive middleware is modeled with 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 tactical nodes. The results of the modeling and simulation is that the WSOA adaptive middleware can achieve the performance baseline achieved during the original flight-test, in the cases of 1, 2, and 4 tactical nodes.     Visually Lossless Perceptual Image Coding Based on Natural- Scene Masking Models

    Perceptual coding is a subdiscipline of image and video coding that uses models of human visual perception to achieve improved compression efficiency. Nearly, all image and video coders have included some perceptual coding strategies, most notably visual masking. Today, modern coders capitalize on various basic forms of masking such as the fact that distortion is harder to see in very dark and very bright regions, in regions with higher frequency content, and in temporal regions with abrupt changes. However, beyond these obvious forms of masking, there are many other masking phenomena that occur (and co-occur) when viewing natural imagery. In this chapter, we present our latest research in perceptual image coding using natural-scene masking models. We specifically discuss: (1) how to predict local distortion visibility using improved natural-scene masking models and (2) how to apply the models to high efficiency video coding (HEVC). As we will demonstrate, these techniques can offer 10–20% fewer bits than baseline HEVC in the ultra-high-quality regime

    Wavelet-Based Audio Embedding & Audio/Video Compression

    With the decline in military spending, the United States relies heavily on state side support. Communications has never been more important. High-quality audio and video capabilities are a must. Watermarking, traditionally used for copyright protection, is used in a new and exciting way. An efficient wavelet-based watermarking technique embeds audio information into a video signal. Several highly effective compression techniques are applied to compress the resulting audio/video signal in an embedded fashion. This wavelet-based compression algorithm incorporates bit plane coding, first difference coding, and Huffman coding. To demonstrate the potential of this audio embedding audio/video compression system, an audio signal is embedded into a video signal and the combined signal is compressed. Results show that overall compression rates of 15:1 can be achieved. The video signal is reconstructed with a median PSNR of nearly 33dB. Finally, the audio signal is extracted with out error
