On the utility of network coding in dynamic environments
Many wireless applications, such as ad-hoc networks and sensor networks, require decentralized operation in dynamically varying environments. We consider a distributed randomized network coding approach that enables efficient decentralized operation of multi-source multicast networks. We show that this approach provides substantial benefits over traditional routing methods in dynamically varying environments. We present a set of empirical trials measuring the performance of network coding versus an approximate online Steiner tree routing approach when connections vary dynamically. The results show that network coding achieves superior performance in a significant fraction of our randomly generated network examples. Such dynamic settings represent a substantially broader class of networking problems than previously recognized for which network coding shows promise of significant practical benefits compared to routing
Evaluating Datalog via Tree Automata and Cycluits
We investigate parameterizations of both database instances and queries that
make query evaluation fixed-parameter tractable in combined complexity. We show
that clique-frontier-guarded Datalog with stratified negation (CFG-Datalog)
enjoys bilinear-time evaluation on structures of bounded treewidth for programs
of bounded rule size. Such programs capture in particular conjunctive queries
with simplicial decompositions of bounded width, guarded negation fragment
queries of bounded CQ-rank, or two-way regular path queries. Our result is
shown by translating to alternating two-way automata, whose semantics is
defined via cyclic provenance circuits (cycluits) that can be tractably

"Graph Entropy, Network Coding and Guessing games"
We introduce the (private) entropy of a directed graph (in a new network coding sense) as well as a number of related concepts. We show that the entropy of a directed graph is identical to its guessing number and can be bounded from below with the number of vertices minus the size of the graphâs shortest index code. We show that the Network Coding solvability of each speciïŹc multiple unicast network is completely determined by the entropy (as well as by the shortest index code) of the directed graph that occur by identifying each source node with each corresponding target node. Shannonâs information inequalities can be used to calculate up- per bounds on a graphâs entropy as well as calculating the size of the minimal index code. Recently, a number of new families of so-called non-shannon-type information inequalities have been discovered. It has been shown that there exist communication networks with a ca- pacity strictly ess than required for solvability, but where this fact cannot be derived using Shannonâs classical information inequalities. Based on this result we show that there exist graphs with an entropy that cannot be calculated using only Shannonâs classical information inequalities, and show that better estimate can be obtained by use of certain non-shannon-type information inequalities
Schnyder woods for higher genus triangulated surfaces, with applications to encoding
Schnyder woods are a well-known combinatorial structure for plane
triangulations, which yields a decomposition into 3 spanning trees. We extend
here definitions and algorithms for Schnyder woods to closed orientable
surfaces of arbitrary genus. In particular, we describe a method to traverse a
triangulation of genus and compute a so-called -Schnyder wood on the
way. As an application, we give a procedure to encode a triangulation of genus
and vertices in bits. This matches the worst-case
encoding rate of Edgebreaker in positive genus. All the algorithms presented
