    Drawing metro maps in concentric circles: A designer‐in‐the‐loop approach with visual examples

    This article presents a proof-of-concept designer-in-the-loop schematic map drawing tool, based on the marriage of two approaches—manual and automated, which provides the technical interactivity of drawing tools between the user and the computer. We focus on concentric circle maps as opposed to the commonly used orthogonal mode representation, which is suggested by previous studies that it could promote better network learning. In comparison with existing methods, the proposed method is more compatible with the framework of effective map design from psychological and aesthetic perspectives, and a range of options can be provided in conjunction with users' preferences. We evaluated our approach on a set of iterations with case studies of Hong Kong metro with a group of three co-authors from the fields of geography, transport engineering, and education

    Network modeling and optimization for energy and sustainable transit

    Energy and transportation systems are integral to our infrastructure. Along with other types of networks, critical challenges constantly arise, particularly with regard to accessibility, efficiency, optimality, and sustainability. In this dissertation, we use mixed integer programming, data mining and mixed complementarity techniques to address some of these challenges. We have developed an improved schematic mapping algorithm to facilitate the process of network representation for a variety of systems beyond transportation. We also discover fundamental patterns in bicycle ownership on a global scale with implications for sustainable urban planning and public health outcomes. Finally, we model the fast-growing crude oil market in North America, implementing scenarios that point to integrated approaches to exports, pipeline investments and targeted rail restrictions as most viable for addressing medium-term oil transportation concerns. The methods we employ are generalizable to other types of energy and transit systems, and beyond. Finally, we discuss the importance of these methods to newer applications

    Schematic bus transit maps for the web using genetic algorithms

    Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Geospatial TechnologiesThe octilinear schematic map, layout recognized worldwide in metro maps, is an important transit informative tool. This research investigates how algorithms for the visualization of schematic maps can be availed in mobile web devices context in order to empower the efficiency in transmitting information of bus transit maps. A genetic algorithm for path octilinear schematization technique has been used and tested to create the schematic data. Location-based and interactivity functionalities were embedded to the resulting digital maps in order to create personalized maps to meet specific user needs. A prototype of a web application and real transit data of the city of CastellĂłn in Spain was used to test the methodology. The results have shown that real time schematizations open possibilities concerning usability that add extra value to schematic transit maps. Additionally, suggested improvements have been made to the genetic algorithm and performance tests show that genetic algorithms are adequate, in terms of efficiency, to sketch bus transit maps automatically

    A Survey on Transit Map Layout – from Design, Machine, and Human Perspectives

    Transit maps are designed to present information for using public transportation systems, such as urban railways. Creating a transit map is a time‐consuming process, which requires iterative information selection, layout design, and usability validation, and thus maps cannot easily be customised or updated frequently. To improve this, scientists investigate fully‐ or semi‐automatic techniques in order to produce high quality transit maps using computers and further examine their corresponding usability. Nonetheless, the quality gap between manually‐drawn maps and machine‐generated maps is still large. To elaborate the current research status, this state‐of‐the‐art report provides an overview of the transit map generation process, primarily from Design, Machine, and Human perspectives. A systematic categorisation is introduced to describe the design pipeline, and an extensive analysis of perspectives is conducted to support the proposed taxonomy. We conclude this survey with a discussion on the current research status, open challenges, and future directions

    This report documents the program and outcomes of the Dagstuhl Seminar 15031 Understanding Complexity in Multiobjective Optimization. This seminar carried on the series of four previous Dagstuhl Seminars (04461, 06501, 09041 and 12041) that were focused on Multiobjective Optimization, and strengthening the links between the Evolutionary Multiobjective Optimization (EMO) and Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) communities. The purpose of the seminar was to bring together researchers from the two communities to take part in a wide-ranging discussion about the different sources and impacts of complexity in multiobjective optimization. The outcome was a clarified viewpoint of complexity in the various facets of multiobjective optimization, leading to several research initiatives with innovative approaches for coping with complexity

    Toward Holistic Energy Management Strategies for Fuel Cell Hybrid Electric Vehicles in Heavy-Duty Applications

    The increasing need to slow down climate change for environmental protection demands further advancements toward regenerative energy and sustainable mobility. While individual mobility applications are assumed to be satisfied with improving battery electric vehicles (BEVs), the growing sector of freight transport and heavy-duty applications requires alternative solutions to meet the requirements of long ranges and high payloads. Fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles (FCHEVs) emerge as a capable technology for high-energy applications. This technology comprises a fuel cell system (FCS) for energy supply combined with buffering energy storages, such as batteries or ultracapacitors. In this article, recent successful developments regarding FCHEVs in various heavy-duty applications are presented. Subsequently, an overview of the FCHEV drivetrain, its main components, and different topologies with an emphasis on heavy-duty trucks is given. In order to enable system layout optimization and energy management strategy (EMS) design, functionality and modeling approaches for the FCS, battery, ultracapacitor, and further relevant subsystems are briefly described. Afterward, common methodologies for EMS are structured, presenting a new taxonomy for dynamic optimization-based EMS from a control engineering perspective. Finally, the findings lead to a guideline toward holistic EMS, encouraging the co-optimization of system design, and EMS development for FCHEVs. For the EMS, we propose a layered model predictive control (MPC) approach, which takes velocity planning, the mitigation of degradation effects, and the auxiliaries into account simultaneously

    Modelle des maschinellen Lernens sind zunehmend in der Gesellschaft verankert, oft in Form von automatisierten Entscheidungsprozessen. Ein wesentlicher Grund dafĂŒr ist die verbesserte ZugĂ€nglichkeit von Daten, aber auch von Toolkits fĂŒr maschinelles Lernen, die den Zugang zu Methoden des maschinellen Lernens fĂŒr Nicht-Experten ermöglichen. Diese Arbeit umfasst mehrere BeitrĂ€ge zur Demokratisierung des Zugangs zum maschinellem Lernen, mit dem Ziel, einem breiterem Publikum Zugang zu diesen Technologien zu er- möglichen. Die BeitrĂ€ge in diesem Manuskript stammen aus mehreren Bereichen innerhalb dieses weiten Gebiets. Ein großer Teil ist dem Bereich des automatisierten maschinellen Lernens (AutoML) und der Hyperparameter-Optimierung gewidmet, mit dem Ziel, die oft mĂŒhsame Aufgabe, ein optimales Vorhersagemodell fĂŒr einen gegebenen Datensatz zu finden, zu vereinfachen. Dieser Prozess besteht meist darin ein fĂŒr vom Benutzer vorgegebene Leistungsmetrik(en) optimales Modell zu finden. Oft kann dieser Prozess durch Lernen aus vorhergehenden Experimenten verbessert oder beschleunigt werden. In dieser Arbeit werden drei solcher Methoden vorgestellt, die entweder darauf abzielen, eine feste Menge möglicher Hyperparameterkonfigurationen zu erhalten, die wahrscheinlich gute Lösungen fĂŒr jeden neuen Datensatz enthalten, oder Eigenschaften der DatensĂ€tze zu nutzen, um neue Konfigurationen vorzuschlagen. DarĂŒber hinaus wird eine Sammlung solcher erforderlichen Metadaten zu den Experimenten vorgestellt, und es wird gezeigt, wie solche Metadaten fĂŒr die Entwicklung und als Testumgebung fĂŒr neue Hyperparameter- Optimierungsmethoden verwendet werden können. Die weite Verbreitung von ML-Modellen in vielen Bereichen der Gesellschaft erfordert gleichzeitig eine genauere Untersuchung der Art und Weise, wie aus Modellen abgeleitete automatisierte Entscheidungen die Gesellschaft formen, und ob sie möglicherweise Individuen oder einzelne Bevölkerungsgruppen benachteiligen. In dieser Arbeit wird daher ein AutoML-Tool vorgestellt, das es ermöglicht, solche Überlegungen in die Suche nach einem optimalen Modell miteinzubeziehen. Diese Forderung nach Fairness wirft gleichzeitig die Frage auf, ob die Fairness eines Modells zuverlĂ€ssig geschĂ€tzt werden kann, was in einem weiteren Beitrag in dieser Arbeit untersucht wird. Da der Zugang zu Methoden des maschinellen Lernens auch stark vom Zugang zu Software und Toolboxen abhĂ€ngt, sind mehrere BeitrĂ€ge in Form von Software Teil dieser Arbeit. Das R-Paket mlr3pipelines ermöglicht die Einbettung von Modellen in sogenan- nte Machine Learning Pipelines, die Vor- und Nachverarbeitungsschritte enthalten, die im maschinellen Lernen und AutoML hĂ€ufig benötigt werden. Das mlr3fairness R-Paket hingegen ermöglicht es dem Benutzer, Modelle auf potentielle Benachteiligung hin zu ĂŒber- prĂŒfen und diese durch verschiedene Techniken zu reduzieren. Eine dieser Techniken, multi-calibration wurde darĂŒberhinaus als seperate Software veröffentlicht.Machine learning artifacts are increasingly embedded in society, often in the form of automated decision-making processes. One major reason for this, along with methodological improvements, is the increasing accessibility of data but also machine learning toolkits that enable access to machine learning methodology for non-experts. The core focus of this thesis is exactly this – democratizing access to machine learning in order to enable a wider audience to benefit from its potential. Contributions in this manuscript stem from several different areas within this broader area. A major section is dedicated to the field of automated machine learning (AutoML) with the goal to abstract away the tedious task of obtaining an optimal predictive model for a given dataset. This process mostly consists of finding said optimal model, often through hyperparameter optimization, while the user in turn only selects the appropriate performance metric(s) and validates the resulting models. This process can be improved or sped up by learning from previous experiments. Three such methods one with the goal to obtain a fixed set of possible hyperparameter configurations that likely contain good solutions for any new dataset and two using dataset characteristics to propose new configurations are presented in this thesis. It furthermore presents a collection of required experiment metadata and how such meta-data can be used for the development and as a test bed for new hyperparameter optimization methods. The pervasion of models derived from ML in many aspects of society simultaneously calls for increased scrutiny with respect to how such models shape society and the eventual biases they exhibit. Therefore, this thesis presents an AutoML tool that allows incorporating fairness considerations into the search for an optimal model. This requirement for fairness simultaneously poses the question of whether we can reliably estimate a model’s fairness, which is studied in a further contribution in this thesis. Since access to machine learning methods also heavily depends on access to software and toolboxes, several contributions in the form of software are part of this thesis. The mlr3pipelines R package allows for embedding models in so-called machine learning pipelines that include pre- and postprocessing steps often required in machine learning and AutoML. The mlr3fairness R package on the other hand enables users to audit models for potential biases as well as reduce those biases through different debiasing techniques.     State-of-the-art in aerodynamic shape optimisation methods

    Aerodynamic optimisation has become an indispensable component for any aerodynamic design over the past 60 years, with applications to aircraft, cars, trains, bridges, wind turbines, internal pipe flows, and cavities, among others, and is thus relevant in many facets of technology. With advancements in computational power, automated design optimisation procedures have become more competent, however, there is an ambiguity and bias throughout the literature with regards to relative performance of optimisation architectures and employed algorithms. This paper provides a well-balanced critical review of the dominant optimisation approaches that have been integrated with aerodynamic theory for the purpose of shape optimisation. A total of 229 papers, published in more than 120 journals and conference proceedings, have been classified into 6 different optimisation algorithm approaches. The material cited includes some of the most well-established authors and publications in the field of aerodynamic optimisation. This paper aims to eliminate bias toward certain algorithms by analysing the limitations, drawbacks, and the benefits of the most utilised optimisation approaches. This review provides comprehensive but straightforward insight for non-specialists and reference detailing the current state for specialist practitioners

    Optimisation of flow chemistry: tools and algorithms

    The coupling of flow chemistry with automated laboratory equipment has become increasingly common and used to support the efficient manufacturing of chemicals. A variety of reactors and analytical techniques have been used in such configurations for investigating and optimising the processing conditions of different reactions. However, the integrated reactors used thus far have been constrained to single phase mixing, greatly limiting the scope of reactions for such studies. This thesis presents the development and integration of a millilitre-scale CSTR, the fReactor, that is able to process multiphase flows, thus broadening the range of reactions susceptible of being investigated in this way. Following a thorough review of the literature covering the uses of flow chemistry and lab-scale reactor technology, insights on the design of a temperature-controlled version of the fReactor with an accuracy of ±0.3 ÂșC capable of cutting waiting times 44% when compared to the previous reactor are given. A demonstration of its use is provided for which the product of a multiphasic reaction is analysed automatically under different reaction conditions according to a sampling plan. Metamodeling and cross-validation techniques are applied to these results, where single and multi-objective optimisations are carried out over the response surface models of different metrics to illustrate different trade-offs between them. The use of such techniques allowed reducing the error incurred by the common least squares polynomial fitting by over 12%. Additionally, a demonstration of the fReactor as a tool for synchrotron X-Ray Diffraction is also carried out by means of successfully assessing the change in polymorph caused by solvent switching, this being the first synchrotron experiment using this sort of device. The remainder of the thesis focuses on applying the same metamodeling and cross-validation techniques used previously, in the optimisation of the design of a miniaturised continuous oscillatory baffled reactor. However, rather than using these techniques with physical experimentation, they are used in conjunction with computational fluid dynamics. This reactor shows a better residence time distribution than its CSTR counterparts. Notably, the effect of the introduction of baffle offsetting in a plate design of the reactor is identified as a key parameter in giving a narrow residence time distribution and good mixing. Under this configuration it is possible to reduce the RTD variance by 45% and increase the mixing efficiency by 60% when compared to the best performing opposing baffles geometry

    [Excerpt] Preface: Past Global Optimization Workshop shave been held in Sopron (1985 and 1990), Szeged (WGO, 1995), Florence (GO’99, 1999), Hanmer Springs (Let’s GO, 2001), Santorini (Frontiers in GO, 2003), San JosĂ© (Go’05, 2005), Mykonos (AGO’07, 2007), Skukuza (SAGO’08, 2008), Toulouse (TOGO’10, 2010), Natal (NAGO’12, 2012) and MĂĄlaga (MAGO’14, 2014) with the aim of stimulating discussion between senior and junior researchers on the topic of Global Optimization. In 2016, the XIII Global Optimization Workshop (GOW’16) takes place in Braga and is organized by three researchers from the University of Minho. Two of them belong to the Systems Engineering and Operational Research Group from the Algoritmi Research Centre and the other to the Statistics, Applied Probability and Operational Research Group from the Centre of Mathematics. The event received more than 50 submissions from 15 countries from Europe, South America and North America. We want to express our gratitude to the invited speaker Panos Pardalos for accepting the invitation and sharing his expertise, helping us to meet the workshop objectives.
