The impact of employees' working relations in creating and retaining trust: the case of the Bahrain Olympic Committee
Introduction: This thesis investigates the impact of employeesâ working relations in creating, maintaining and retaining trust in the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC).
Aim: The main aim of this thesis is to determine how the three groups of Organisational Trust variables, namely Social System Elements (SSE), Factors of Trustworthiness (FoT) and Third-Party Gossip (TPG), affect employeesâ Organisational Trust (OTR) in the BOC and promote Organisational Citizenship Behaviour (OCB). To answer this main aim, a conceptual framework was created that focused on exploring the following research aims: (1) the interrelationship between SSE and FoT, (2) the effect of SSE on OTR, (3) the impact of TPG on OTR and (4) the effect of OTR on overall OCB.
Methodology: The study uses a mixed-method case study research style that included in-depth semi-structured interviews with 17 managers, an online questionnaire survey with 320 employees of the BOC and an analysis of the BOCâs Annual Reports from 2015 to 2018.
Results: The qualitative and quantitative findings indicate, firstly, that there is a significant interrelationship between SSE and FoT, establishing that SSEâs perception of organisational justice (OJ), including that FoTs benevolence and integrity as the most important factors in yielding employeesâ trust in the BOC. Secondly, it has been established that SSEs have significant direct and indirect effects on OTR. Thirdly, negative and positive TPG concurrently occurred in the BOC and the prevalence of negative TPG poses more impact on OTR. Finally, this studyâs findings demonstrated OTRâs effect in generating OCB, including that Civic Virtue was rated as the most preferred of the five OCB themes; this indicates the managersâ and the employeesâ strong emotional attachment and support of the activities taking place at the BOC.
Contributions: Overall, this thesis substantially contributes to OTR literature, particularly in the context of the Middle East. It also proposes several insightful recommendations for future research and practical implications for practitioners in the field of Organisational Trust

Academic integrity : a call to research and action
Originally published in French:L'urgence de l'intĂ©gritĂ© acadĂ©mique, EÌditions EMS, Management & socieÌteÌ, Caen, 2021 (ISBN 978-2-37687-472-0).The urgency of doing complements the urgency of knowing. Urgency here is not the inconsequential injunction of irrational immediacy. It arises in various contexts for good reasons,
when there is a threat to the human existence and harms to others. Today, our knowledge based civilization is at risk both by new production models of knowledge and by the shamelessness
of knowledge delinquents, exposing the greatest number to important risks. Swiftly, the editors respond to the diagnostic by setting up a reference tool for academic integrity.
Across multiple dialogues between the twenty-five chapters and five major themes, the ethical response shapes pragmatic horizons for action, on a range of disciplinary competencies:
from science to international diplomacy. An interdisciplinary work indispensable for teachers, students and university researchers and administrators
Innovative Evidence-Based Assessment and Treatment of Oropharyngeal Dysphagia and Communication Disorders in Infants and Young Children at High Risk of Cerebral Palsy
Infants with cerebral palsy (CP) have concomitant feeding and communication disorders with lifelong detrimental consequences, including premature death. Early detection and intervention for these deficits is under-researched. This thesis investigates evidence, current practice, innovative assessment, and novel intervention for these domains.
To critically appraise evidence for all interventions for children with CP, a large-scale systematic review was conducted. There is high level evidence to support the use of electrical stimulation alongside oral sensory motor interventions, and Functional Chewing Training. Low positive evidence exists supporting direct intervention for literacy, parent training and augmentative alternative communication for language and communication disorders.
An international survey of dysphagia practice revealed lack of alignment with evidence, with few patients receiving gold standard assessments, adaptation over direct treatment, and children receiving less-intensive treatment than adults.
Ultrasound and Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing were piloted as novel instrumental assessments of OPD in infants with CP. These tools show promise for safe early detection of OPD and warrant more research to establish psychometrics.
A second systematic review was undertaken to determine evidence for OPD interventions specifically for infants with CP. Results found that neuroplasticity and motor learning-based interventions are most promising.
The Baby Intensive Early Active Treatment (BabiEAT) program was then designed to harness plasticity and was tested against standard care in a pilot randomised control trial. Results showed that BabiEAT was feasible and acceptable, and conferred superior gains in feeding and parental quality of life while maintaining health and safety.
To limit preventable death and optimise outcomes, speech pathologists must keep abreast of evidence, upskill, and implement new successful approaches
Integrating cognition in the laboratory with cognition in the real world: the time cognition takes, task fidelity, and finding tasks when they are mixed together
It is now possible for real-life activities, unfolding over their natural range of temporal and spatial scales, to become the primary targets of cognitive studies. Movement toward this type of research will require an integrated methodological approach currently uncommon in the field. When executed hand in hand with thorough and ecologically valid empirical description, properly developed laboratory tasks can serve as model systems to capture the essentials of a targeted real-life activity. When integrated together, data from these two kinds of studies can facilitate causal analysis and modeling of the mental and neural processes that govern that activity, enabling a fuller account than either method can provide on its own. The resulting account, situated in the activityâs natural environmental, social, and motivational context, can then enable effective and efficient development of interventions to support and improve the activity as it actually unfolds in real time. We believe that such an integrated multi-level research program should be common rather than rare and is necessary to achieve scientifically and societally important goals. The time is right to finally abandon the boundaries that separate the laboratory from the outside world
