    Bio-inspired computation: where we stand and what's next

    In recent years, the research community has witnessed an explosion of literature dealing with the adaptation of behavioral patterns and social phenomena observed in nature towards efficiently solving complex computational tasks. This trend has been especially dramatic in what relates to optimization problems, mainly due to the unprecedented complexity of problem instances, arising from a diverse spectrum of domains such as transportation, logistics, energy, climate, social networks, health and industry 4.0, among many others. Notwithstanding this upsurge of activity, research in this vibrant topic should be steered towards certain areas that, despite their eventual value and impact on the field of bio-inspired computation, still remain insufficiently explored to date. The main purpose of this paper is to outline the state of the art and to identify open challenges concerning the most relevant areas within bio-inspired optimization. An analysis and discussion are also carried out over the general trajectory followed in recent years by the community working in this field, thereby highlighting the need for reaching a consensus and joining forces towards achieving valuable insights into the understanding of this family of optimization techniques

    Obstacle-aware Adaptive Informative Path Planning for UAV-based Target Search

    Target search with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is relevant problem to many scenarios, e.g., search and rescue (SaR). However, a key challenge is planning paths for maximal search efficiency given flight time constraints. To address this, we propose the Obstacle-aware Adaptive Informative Path Planning (OA-IPP) algorithm for target search in cluttered environments using UAVs. Our approach leverages a layered planning strategy using a Gaussian Process (GP)-based model of target occupancy to generate informative paths in continuous 3D space. Within this framework, we introduce an adaptive replanning scheme which allows us to trade off between information gain, field coverage, sensor performance, and collision avoidance for efficient target detection. Extensive simulations show that our OA-IPP method performs better than state-of-the-art planners, and we demonstrate its application in a realistic urban SaR scenario.Comment: Paper accepted for International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA-2019) to be held at Montreal, Canad

    GAMBIT: A parameterless model-based evolutionary algorithm for mixed-integer problems

    Learning and exploiting problem structure is one of the key challenges in optimization. This is especially important for black-box optimization (BBO) where prior structural knowledge of a problem is not available. Existing model-based Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) are very efficient at learning structure in both the discrete, and in the continuous domain. In this article, discrete and continuous model-building mechanisms are integrated for the Mixed-Integer (MI) domain, comprising discrete and continuous variables. We revisit a recently introduced model-based evolutionary algorithm for the MI domain, the Genetic Algorithm for Model-Based mixed-Integer opTimization (GAMBIT). We extend GAMBIT with a parameterless scheme that allows for practical use of the algorithm without the need to explicitly specify any parameters. We furthermore contrast GAMBIT with other model-based alternatives. The ultimate goal of processing mixed dependences explicitly in GAMBIT is also addressed by introducing a new mechanism for the explicit exploitation of mixed dependences. We find that processing mixed dependences with this novel mechanism allows for more efficient optimization. We further contrast the parameterless GAMBIT with Mixed-Integer Evolution Strategies (MIES) and other state-of-the-art MI optimization algorithms from the General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) commercial algorithm suite on problems with and without constraints, and show that GAMBIT is capable of solving problems where variable dependences prevent many algorithms from successfully optimizing them

    Optimal Energy-Driven Aircraft Design Under Uncertainty

    Aerodynamic shape design robust optimization is gaining popularity in the aeronautical industry as it provides optimal solutions that do not deteriorate excessively in the presence of uncertainties. Several approaches exist to quantify uncertainty and, the dissertation deals with the use of risk measures, particularly the Value at Risk (VaR) and the Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR). The calculation of these measures relies on the Empirical Cumulative Distribution Function (ECDF) construction. Estimating the ECDF with a Monte Carlo sampling can require many samples, especially if good accuracy is needed on the probability distribution tails. Furthermore, suppose the quantity of interest (QoI) requires a significant computational effort, as in this dissertation, where has to resort to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods. In that case, it becomes imperative to introduce techniques that reduce the number of samples needed or speed up the QoI evaluations while maintaining the same accuracy. Therefore, this dissertation focuses on investigating methods for reducing the computational cost required to perform optimization under uncertainty. Here, two cooperating approaches are introduced: speeding up the CFD evaluations and approximating the statistical measures. Specifically, the CFD evaluation is sped up by employing a far-field approach, capable of providing better estimations of aerodynamic forces on coarse grids with respect to a classical near-field approach. The advantages and critical points of the implementation of this method are explored in viscous and inviscid test cases. On the other hand, the approximation of the statistical measure is performed by using the gradient-based method or a surrogate-based approach. Notably, the gradient-based method uses adjoint field solutions to reduce the time required to evaluate them through CFD drastically. Both methods are used to solve the shape optimization of the central section of a Blended Wing Body under uncertainty. Moreover, a multi-fidelity surrogate-based optimization is used for the robust design of a propeller blade. Finally, additional research work documented in this dissertation focuses on utilizing an optimization algorithm that mixes integer and continuous variables for the robust optimization of High Lift Devices

    A new Taxonomy of Continuous Global Optimization Algorithms

    Surrogate-based optimization, nature-inspired metaheuristics, and hybrid combinations have become state of the art in algorithm design for solving real-world optimization problems. Still, it is difficult for practitioners to get an overview that explains their advantages in comparison to a large number of available methods in the scope of optimization. Available taxonomies lack the embedding of current approaches in the larger context of this broad field. This article presents a taxonomy of the field, which explores and matches algorithm strategies by extracting similarities and differences in their search strategies. A particular focus lies on algorithms using surrogates, nature-inspired designs, and those created by design optimization. The extracted features of components or operators allow us to create a set of classification indicators to distinguish between a small number of classes. The features allow a deeper understanding of components of the search strategies and further indicate the close connections between the different algorithm designs. We present intuitive analogies to explain the basic principles of the search algorithms, particularly useful for novices in this research field.
