State-of-the-art on evolution and reactivity
This report starts by, in Chapter 1, outlining aspects of querying and updating resources on
the Web and on the Semantic Web, including the development of query and update languages
to be carried out within the Rewerse project.
From this outline, it becomes clear that several existing research areas and topics are of
interest for this work in Rewerse. In the remainder of this report we further present state of
the art surveys in a selection of such areas and topics. More precisely: in Chapter 2 we give
an overview of logics for reasoning about state change and updates; Chapter 3 is devoted to briefly describing existing update languages for the Web, and also for updating logic programs;
in Chapter 4 event-condition-action rules, both in the context of active database systems and
in the context of semistructured data, are surveyed; in Chapter 5 we give an overview of some relevant rule-based agents frameworks
Intelligent Sensor Networks
In the last decade, wireless or wired sensor networks have attracted much attention. However, most designs target general sensor network issues including protocol stack (routing, MAC, etc.) and security issues. This book focuses on the close integration of sensing, networking, and smart signal processing via machine learning. Based on their world-class research, the authors present the fundamentals of intelligent sensor networks. Bridge Structrural Health Monitoring Using a Cyber-Physical System Framework
Highway bridges are critical infrastructure elements supporting commercial and personal traffic. However, bridge deterioration coupled with insufficient funding for bridge maintenance remain a chronic problem faced by the United States. With the emergence of wireless sensor networks (WSN), structural health monitoring (SHM) has gained increasing attention over the last decade as a viable means of assessing bridge structural conditions. While intensive research has been conducted on bridge SHM, few studies have clearly demonstrated the value of SHM to bridge owners, especially using real-world implementation in operational bridges.
This thesis first aims to enhance existing bridge SHM implementations by developing a cyber-physical system (CPS) framework that integrates multiple SHM systems with traffic cameras and weigh-in-motion (WIM) stations located along the same corridor. To demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed CPS, a 20-mile segment of the northbound I-275 highway in Michigan is instrumented with four traffic cameras, two bridge SHM systems and a WIM station. Real-time truck detection algorithms are deployed to intelligently trigger the SHM systems for data collection during large truck events. Such a triggering approach can improve data acquisition efficiency by up to 70% (as compared to schedule-based data collection). Leveraging computer vision-based truck re-identification techniques applied to videos from the traffic cameras along the corridor, a two-stage pipeline is proposed to fuse bridge input data (i.e. truck loads as measured by the WIM station) and output data (i.e. bridge responses to a given truck load). From August 2017 to April 2019, over 20,000 truck events have been captured by the CPS. To the author’s best knowledge, the CPS implementation is the first of its kind in the nation and offers large volume of heterogeneous input-output data thereby opening new opportunities for novel data-driven bridge condition assessment methods.
Built upon the developed CPS framework, the second half of the thesis focuses on use of the data in real-world bridge asset management applications. Long-term bridge strain response data is used to investigate and model composite action behavior exhibited in slab-on-girder highway bridges. Partial composite action is observed and quantified over negative bending regions of the bridge through the monitoring of slip strain at the girder-deck interface. It is revealed that undesired composite action over negative bending regions might be a cause of deck deterioration. The analysis performed on modeling composite action is a first in studying composite behavior in operational bridges with in-situ SHM measurements. Second, a data-driven analytical method is proposed to derive site-specific parameters such as dynamic load allowance and unit influence lines for bridge load rating using the input-output data. The resulting rating factors more rationally account for the bridge's systematic behavior leading to more accurate rating of a bridge's load-carrying capacity. Third, the proposed CPS framework is shown capable of measuring highway traffic loads. The paired WIM and bridge response data is used for training a learning-based bridge WIM system where truck weight characteristics such as axle weights are derived directly using corresponding bridge response measurements. Intelligent Computing: The Latest Advances, Challenges and Future
Computing is a critical driving force in the development of human
civilization. In recent years, we have witnessed the emergence of intelligent
computing, a new computing paradigm that is reshaping traditional computing and
promoting digital revolution in the era of big data, artificial intelligence
and internet-of-things with new computing theories, architectures, methods,
systems, and applications. Intelligent computing has greatly broadened the
scope of computing, extending it from traditional computing on data to
increasingly diverse computing paradigms such as perceptual intelligence,
cognitive intelligence, autonomous intelligence, and human-computer fusion
intelligence. Intelligence and computing have undergone paths of different
evolution and development for a long time but have become increasingly
intertwined in recent years: intelligent computing is not only
intelligence-oriented but also intelligence-driven. Such cross-fertilization
has prompted the emergence and rapid advancement of intelligent computing.
Intelligent computing is still in its infancy and an abundance of innovations
in the theories, systems, and applications of intelligent computing are
expected to occur soon. We present the first comprehensive survey of literature
on intelligent computing, covering its theory fundamentals, the technological
fusion of intelligence and computing, important applications, challenges, and
future perspectives. We believe that this survey is highly timely and will
provide a comprehensive reference and cast valuable insights into intelligent
computing for academic and industrial researchers and practitioners
Nowcasting for a high-resolution weather radar network
2010 Fall.Includes bibliographical references.Short-term prediction (nowcasting) of high-impact weather events can lead to significant improvement in warnings and advisories and is of great practical importance. Nowcasting using weather radar reflectivity data has been shown to be particularly useful. The Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere (CASA) radar network provides high-resolution reflectivity data amenable to producing valuable nowcasts. The high-resolution nature of CASA data requires the use of an efficient nowcasting approach, which necessitated the development of the Dynamic Adaptive Radar Tracking of Storms (DARTS) and sinc kernel-based advection nowcasting methodology. This methodology was implemented operationally in the CASA Distributed Collaborative Adaptive Sensing (DCAS) system in a robust and efficient manner necessitated by the high-resolution nature of CASA data and distributed nature of the environment in which the nowcasting system operates. Nowcasts up to 10 min to support emergency manager decision-making and 1-5 min to steer the CASA radar nodes to better observe the advecting storm patterns for forecasters and researchers are currently provided by this system. Results of nowcasting performance during the 2009 CASA IP experiment are presented. Additionally, currently state-of-the-art scale-based filtering methods were adapted and evaluated for use in the CASA DCAS to provide a scale-based analysis of nowcasting. DARTS was also incorporated in the Weather Support to Deicing Decision Making system to provide more accurate and efficient snow water equivalent nowcasts for aircraft deicing decision support relative to the radar-based nowcasting method currently used in the operational system. Results of an evaluation using data collected from 2007-2008 by the Weather Service Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) located near Denver, Colorado, and the National Center for Atmospheric Research Marshall Test Site near Boulder, Colorado, are presented. DARTS was also used to study the short-term predictability of precipitation patterns depicted by high-resolution reflectivity data observed at microalpha (0.2-2 km) to mesobeta (20-200 km) scales by the CASA radar network. Additionally, DARTS was used to investigate the performance of nowcasting rainfall fields derived from specific differential phase estimates, which have been shown to provide more accurate and robust rainfall estimates compared to those made from radar reflectivity data

Ubiquitous Computing
The aim of this book is to give a treatment of the actively developed domain of Ubiquitous computing. Originally proposed by Mark D. Weiser, the concept of Ubiquitous computing enables a real-time global sensing, context-aware informational retrieval, multi-modal interaction with the user and enhanced visualization capabilities. In effect, Ubiquitous computing environments give extremely new and futuristic abilities to look at and interact with our habitat at any time and from anywhere. In that domain, researchers are confronted with many foundational, technological and engineering issues which were not known before. Detailed cross-disciplinary coverage of these issues is really needed today for further progress and widening of application range. It is an irrefutable fact that the Internet of Things (IoT) will eventually change our daily lives because its applications and relevant technologies have been or will be penetrating our daily lives. Also, the IoT is aimed to connect all the things (e.g., devices and systems) together via the Internet, thus making it easy to collect the data of users or environments and to find out useful information from the gathered data by using data mining technologies. As a consequence, how intelligent systems are developed for the IoT has become a critical research topic today. This means that artificial intelligence (AI) technologies (e.g., supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and semi-supervised learning) were used in the development of intelligent systems for analyzing the data captured from IoT devices or making decisions for IoT systems. It can be easily seen that AI can make an IoT system more intelligent and thus more accurate. For example, various sensors can be used for a smart home system to pinpoint the location and analyze the behavior of a human; however, with AI technologies, a more accurate prediction can be provided on the two pieces of information of a human. One of the most important uses for AI technologies is to make IoT systems more intelligent in order to provide a more convenient environment for users; thus, how to use existing AI technologies or develop new AI technologies to construct a better IoT system has attracted the attention of researchers from different disciplines in recent years. That is why, besides using existing supervised, unsupervised, semi-supervised learning algorithms, data mining algorithms, and machine learning algorithms, several recent studies have also attempted to develop new intelligent methods for the devices or systems for the IoT. Hybrid intelligent decision support system for distributed detection based on ad hoc integrated WSN & RFID
This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University LondonThe real time monitoring of environment context aware activities, based on distributed detection, is becoming a standard in public safety and service delivery in a wide range of domains (child and elderly care and supervision, logistics, circulation, and other). The safety of people, goods and premises depends on the prompt immediate reaction to potential hazards identified in real time, at an early stage to engage appropriate control actions. Effective emergency response can be supported only by available and acquired expertise or elaborate collaborative knowledge in the domain of distributed detection that include indoor sensing, tracking and localizing. This research proposes a hybrid conceptual multi-agent framework for the acquisition of collaborative knowledge in dynamic complex context aware environments for distributed detection. This framework has been applied for the design and development of a hybrid intelligent multi-agent decision system (HIDSS) that supports a decentralized active sensing, tracking and localizing strategy, and the deployment and configuration of smart detection devices associated to active sensor nodes wirelessly connected in a network topology to configure, deploy and control ad hoc wireless sensor networks (WSNs). This system, which is based on the interactive use of data, models and knowledge base, has been implemented to support fire detection and control access fusion functions aimed at elaborating: An integrated data model, grouping the building information data and WSN-RFID database, composed of the network configuration and captured data, A virtual layout configuration of the controlled premises, based on using a building information model, A knowledge-based support for the design of generic detection devices, A multi-criteria decision making model for generic detection devices distribution, ad hoc WSNs configuration, clustering and deployment, and Predictive data models for evacuation planning, and fire and evacuation simulation. An evaluation of the system prototype has been carried out to enrich information and knowledge fusion requirements and show the scope of the concepts used in data and process modelling. It has shown the practicability of hybrid solutions grouping generic homogeneous smart detection devices enhanced by heterogeneous support devices in their deployment, forming ad hoc networks that integrate WSNs and radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. The novelty in this work is the web-based support system architecture proposed in this framework that is based on the use of intelligent agent modelling and multi-agent systems, and the decoupling of the processes supporting the multi-sensor data fusion from those supporting different context applications.
