On the Implementation of GNU Prolog
GNU Prolog is a general-purpose implementation of the Prolog language, which
distinguishes itself from most other systems by being, above all else, a
native-code compiler which produces standalone executables which don't rely on
any byte-code emulator or meta-interpreter. Other aspects which stand out
include the explicit organization of the Prolog system as a multipass compiler,
where intermediate representations are materialized, in Unix compiler
tradition. GNU Prolog also includes an extensible and high-performance finite
domain constraint solver, integrated with the Prolog language but implemented
using independent lower-level mechanisms. This article discusses the main
issues involved in designing and implementing GNU Prolog: requirements, system
organization, performance and portability issues as well as its position with
respect to other Prolog system implementations and the ISO standardization

Automated Verification of Practical Garbage Collectors
Garbage collectors are notoriously hard to verify, due to their low-level
interaction with the underlying system and the general difficulty in reasoning
about reachability in graphs. Several papers have presented verified
collectors, but either the proofs were hand-written or the collectors were too
simplistic to use on practical applications. In this work, we present two
mechanically verified garbage collectors, both practical enough to use for
real-world C# benchmarks. The collectors and their associated allocators
consist of x86 assembly language instructions and macro instructions, annotated
with preconditions, postconditions, invariants, and assertions. We used the
Boogie verification generator and the Z3 automated theorem prover to verify
this assembly language code mechanically. We provide measurements comparing the
performance of the verified collector with that of the standard Bartok
collectors on off-the-shelf C# benchmarks, demonstrating their competitiveness
Towards Understanding the Origin of Genetic Languages
Molecular biology is a nanotechnology that works--it has worked for billions
of years and in an amazing variety of circumstances. At its core is a system
for acquiring, processing and communicating information that is universal, from
viruses and bacteria to human beings. Advances in genetics and experience in
designing computers have taken us to a stage where we can understand the
optimisation principles at the root of this system, from the availability of
basic building blocks to the execution of tasks. The languages of DNA and
proteins are argued to be the optimal solutions to the information processing
tasks they carry out. The analysis also suggests simpler predecessors to these
languages, and provides fascinating clues about their origin. Obviously, a
comprehensive unraveling of the puzzle of life would have a lot to say about

A Lambda Term Representation Inspired by Linear Ordered Logic
We introduce a new nameless representation of lambda terms inspired by
ordered logic. At a lambda abstraction, number and relative position of all
occurrences of the bound variable are stored, and application carries the
additional information where to cut the variable context into function and
argument part. This way, complete information about free variable occurrence is
available at each subterm without requiring a traversal, and environments can
be kept exact such that they only assign values to variables that actually
occur in the associated term. Our approach avoids space leaks in interpreters
that build function closures.
In this article, we prove correctness of the new representation and present
an experimental evaluation of its performance in a proof checker for the
Edinburgh Logical Framework.

Efficient Representation of Computational Meshes
We present a simple yet general and efficient approach to representation of
computational meshes. Meshes are represented as sets of mesh entities of
different topological dimensions and their incidence relations. We discuss a
straightforward and efficient storage scheme for such mesh representations and
efficient algorithms for computation of arbitrary incidence relations from a
given initial and minimal set of incidence relations. The general
representation may harbor a wide range of computational meshes, and may also be
specialized to provide simple user interfaces for particular meshes, including
simplicial meshes in one, two and three space dimensions where the mesh
entities correspond to vertices, edges, faces and cells. It is elaborated on
how the proposed concepts and data structures may be used for assembly of
variational forms in parallel over distributed finite element meshes.
Benchmarks are presented to demonstrate efficiency in terms of CPU time and
memory usage

According to the IST/ FET proactive initiative on GLOBAL COMPUTING, the goal is to obtain techniques (models, frameworks, methods, algorithms) for constructing systems that are flexible, dependable, secure, robust and efficient.
The dominant concerns are not those of representing and manipulating data efficiently but rather those of handling the co-ordination and interaction, security, reliability, robustness, failure modes, and control of risk of the entities in the system and the overall design, description and performance of the system itself.
Completely different paradigms of computer science may have to be developed to tackle these issues effectively. The research should concentrate on systems having the following characteristics: • The systems are composed of autonomous computational entities where activity is not centrally controlled, either because global control is impossible or impractical, or because the entities are created or controlled by different owners.
• The computational entities are mobile, due to the movement of the physical platforms or by movement of the entity from one platform to another.
• The configuration varies over time. For instance, the system is open to the introduction of new computational entities and likewise their deletion.
The behaviour of the entities may vary over time.
• The systems operate with incomplete information about the environment.
For instance, information becomes rapidly out of date and mobility requires information about the environment to be discovered.
The ultimate goal of the research action is to provide a solid scientific foundation for the design of such systems, and to lay the groundwork for achieving effective principles for building and analysing such systems.
This workshop covers the aspects related to languages and programming environments as well as analysis of systems and resources involving 9 projects (AGILE , DART, DEGAS , MIKADO, MRG, MYTHS, PEPITO, PROFUNDIS, SECURE) out of the 13 founded under the initiative. After an year from the start of the projects, the goal of the workshop is to fix the state of the art on the topics covered by the two clusters related to programming environments and analysis of systems as well as to devise strategies and new ideas to profitably continue the research effort towards the overall objective of the initiative.
