There is a problem so immense in our built world that it is often not fully realized. This problem is the disconnection between humanity and the physical world. In an era of limitless data and information at our fingertips, buildings, public spaces, and landscapes are divided from us due to their physical nature. Compared with the intense flow of information from our online world driven by the beating engine of the internet, our physical world is silent. This lack of connection not only has consequences for sustainability but also for how we perceive and communicate with our built environment in the modern age. A possible solution to bridge the gap between our physical and online worlds is a technology known as the Internet of Things (IoT). What is IoT? How does it work? Will IoT change the concept of the built environment for a participant within it, and in doing so enhance the dynamic link between humans and place? And what are the implications of IoT for privacy, security, and data for the public good? Lastly, we will identify the most pressing issues existing in the built environment by conducting and analyzing case studies from Pomona College and California State University, Northridge. By analyzing IoT in the context of case studies we can assess its viability and value as a tool for sustainability and equality in communities across the world

Predictive Maintenance of Critical Equipment for Liquefied Natural Gas Liquefaction Process Meeting global energy demand is a massive challenge, especially with the quest of more affinity towards sustainable and cleaner energy. Natural gas is viewed as a bridge fuel to a renewable energy. LNG as a processed form of natural gas is the fastest growing and cleanest form of fossil fuel. Recently, the unprecedented increased in LNG demand, pushes its exploration and processing into offshore as Floating LNG (FLNG). The offshore topsides gas processes and liquefaction has been identified as one of the great challenges of FLNG. Maintaining topside liquefaction process asset such as gas turbine is critical to profitability and reliability, availability of the process facilities. With the setbacks of widely used reactive and preventive time-based maintenances approaches, to meet the optimal reliability and availability requirements of oil and gas operators, this thesis presents a framework driven by AI-based learning approaches for predictive maintenance. The framework is aimed at leveraging the value of condition-based maintenance to minimises the failures and downtimes of critical FLNG equipment (Aeroderivative gas turbine). In this study, gas turbine thermodynamics were introduced, as well as some factors affecting gas turbine modelling. Some important considerations whilst modelling gas turbine system such as modelling objectives, modelling methods, as well as approaches in modelling gas turbines were investigated. These give basis and mathematical background to develop a gas turbine simulated model. The behaviour of simple cycle HDGT was simulated using thermodynamic laws and operational data based on Rowen model. Simulink model is created using experimental data based on Rowen’s model, which is aimed at exploring transient behaviour of an industrial gas turbine. The results show the capability of Simulink model in capture nonlinear dynamics of the gas turbine system, although constraint to be applied for further condition monitoring studies, due to lack of some suitable relevant correlated features required by the model. AI-based models were found to perform well in predicting gas turbines failures. These capabilities were investigated by this thesis and validated using an experimental data obtained from gas turbine engine facility. The dynamic behaviours gas turbines changes when exposed to different varieties of fuel. A diagnostics-based AI models were developed to diagnose different gas turbine engine’s failures associated with exposure to various types of fuels. The capabilities of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) technique have been harnessed to reduce the dimensionality of the dataset and extract good features for the diagnostics model development. Signal processing-based (time-domain, frequency domain, time-frequency domain) techniques have also been used as feature extraction tools, and significantly added more correlations to the dataset and influences the prediction results obtained. Signal processing played a vital role in extracting good features for the diagnostic models when compared PCA. The overall results obtained from both PCA, and signal processing-based models demonstrated the capabilities of neural network-based models in predicting gas turbine’s failures. Further, deep learning-based LSTM model have been developed, which extract features from the time series dataset directly, and hence does not require any feature extraction tool. The LSTM model achieved the highest performance and prediction accuracy, compared to both PCA-based and signal processing-based the models. In summary, it is concluded from this thesis that despite some challenges related to gas turbines Simulink Model for not being integrated fully for gas turbine condition monitoring studies, yet data-driven models have proven strong potentials and excellent performances on gas turbine’s CBM diagnostics. The models developed in this thesis can be used for design and manufacturing purposes on gas turbines applied to FLNG, especially on condition monitoring and fault detection of gas turbines. The result obtained would provide valuable understanding and helpful guidance for researchers and practitioners to implement robust predictive maintenance models that will enhance the reliability and availability of FLNG critical equipment.Petroleum Technology Development Funds (PTDF) Nigeri

[EN] Currently, regional and local decision-makers lack of tools to achieve greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions inventories with enough rigor, accuracy and completeness in order to prioritize available resources efficiently against climate change. Thus, in this thesis the development of a territorial and sectoral information system (SITE) to monitor GHG emissions as a local and regional climate governance tool is exposed. This system combines the advantages of both, top-down and bottom-up approaches, to achieve an innovative hybrid approach to account and manage efficiently GHG emissions. Furthermore, this thesis defines the methodologies developed, a computer proposal for the back-end of the system and seven implementations as representative case studies at different scales (local and regional level), with the different methodological approaches and applied to different sectors. Thus, these implementations demonstrate the potential of the system as decision-making tool against climate change at the regional and local level as climate governance tool. The different implementations in representative pilot cases, both at the regional level in the Valencian Community and at the local level in large (Valencia) and medium-sized municipalities (Quart de Poblet and Llíria) demonstrate the potential for territorial and sectoral adaptation of the system developed. The methodologies developed for the specific sectors of road transport, building and forestry, offer quantifications with a spatial resolution with a great capacity to optimize local and regional policies. Therefore, the tool has a great potential for scalability and a great capacity for continuous improvement through the inclusion of new methodological approaches, adapting the methodologies to the availability of data, specific methodologies for key sectors, and updating to the best methodologies available in the scientific community.Lorenzo Sáez, E. Due to the increasing demand for wireless data, the radio frequency (RF) spectrum has become a very limited resource. Alternative approaches are under investigation to support the future growth in data traffic and next-generation high-speed wireless communication systems. Techniques such as massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), millimeter wave (mmWave) communications and light-fidelity (LiFi) are being explored. Among these technologies, LiFi is a novel bi-directional, high-speed and fully networked wireless communication technology. However, inter-cell interference (ICI) can significantly restrict the system performance of LiFi attocell networks. This thesis focuses on interference mitigation in LiFi attocell networks. The angle diversity receiver (ADR) is one solution to address the issue of ICI as well as frequency reuse in LiFi attocell networks. With the property of high concentration gain and narrow field of view (FOV), the ADR is very beneficial for interference mitigation. However, the optimum structure of the ADR has not been investigated. This motivates us to propose the optimum structures for the ADRs in order to fully exploit the performance gain. The impact of random device orientation and diffuse link signal propagation are taken into consideration. The performance comparison between the select best combining (SBC) and maximum ratio combining (MRC) is carried out under different noise levels. In addition, the double source (DS) system, where each LiFi access point (AP) consists of two sources transmitting the same information signals but with opposite polarity, is proven to outperform the single source (SS) system under certain conditions. Then, to overcome issues around ICI, random device orientation and link blockage, hybrid LiFi/WiFi networks (HLWNs) are considered. In this thesis, dynamic load balancing (LB) considering handover in HLWNs is studied. The orientation-based random waypoint (ORWP) mobility model is considered to provide a more realistic framework to evaluate the performance of HLWNs. Based on the low-pass filtering effect of the LiFi channel, we firstly propose an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA)-based resource allocation (RA) method in LiFi systems. Also, an enhanced evolutionary game theory (EGT)-based LB scheme with handover in HLWNs is proposed. Finally, due to the characteristic of high directivity and narrow beams, a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) array transmission system has been proposed to mitigate ICI. In order to support mobile users, two beam activation methods are proposed. The beam activation based on the corner-cube retroreflector (CCR) can achieve low power consumption and almost-zero delay, allowing real-time beam activation for high-speed users. The mechanism based on the omnidirectional transmitter (ODTx) is suitable for low-speed users and very robust to random orientation

In the institution where I teach, insufficient laboratory equipment for engineering education pushed students to learn via mobile phones or devices. Using mobile technologies to learn and practice is not the issue, but the more important question lies in finding out where and how they use mobile tools for learning. Through the lens of Kearney et al.’s (2012) pedagogical model, using authenticity, personalisation, and collaboration as constructs, this case study adopts a mixed-method approach to investigate the mobile learning activities of students and find out their experiences of what works and what does not work. Four questions are borne out of the over-arching research question, ‘How do students studying at a University in Nigeria perceive mobile learning in electrical and electronic engineering education?’ The first three questions are answered from qualitative, interview data analysed using thematic analysis. The fourth question investigates their collaborations on two mobile social networks using social network and message analysis. The study found how students’ mobile learning relates to the real-world practice of engineering and explained ways of adapting and overcoming the mobile tools’ limitations, and the nature of the collaborations that the students adopted, naturally, when they learn in mobile social networks. It found that mobile engineering learning can be possibly located in an offline mobile zone. It also demonstrates that investigating the effectiveness of mobile learning in the mobile social environment is possible by examining users’ interactions. The study shows how mobile learning personalisation that leads to impactful engineering learning can be achieved. The study shows how to manage most interface and technical challenges associated with mobile engineering learning and provides a new guide for educators on where and how mobile learning can be harnessed. And it revealed how engineering education can be successfully implemented through mobile tools

From wallet to mobile: exploring how mobile payments create customer value in the service experience

    Get PDF
This study explores how mobile proximity payments (MPP) (e.g., Apple Pay) create customer value in the service experience compared to traditional payment methods (e.g. cash and card). The main objectives were firstly to understand how customer value manifests as an outcome in the MPP service experience, and secondly to understand how the customer activities in the process of using MPP create customer value. To achieve these objectives a conceptual framework is built upon the Grönroos-Voima Value Model (Grönroos and Voima, 2013), and uses the Theory of Consumption Value (Sheth et al., 1991) to determine the customer value constructs for MPP, which is complimented with Script theory (Abelson, 1981) to determine the value creating activities the consumer does in the process of paying with MPP. The study uses a sequential exploratory mixed methods design, wherein the first qualitative stage uses two methods, self-observations (n=200) and semi-structured interviews (n=18). The subsequent second quantitative stage uses an online survey (n=441) and Structural Equation Modelling analysis to further examine the relationships and effect between the value creating activities and customer value constructs identified in stage one. The academic contributions include the development of a model of mobile payment services value creation in the service experience, introducing the concept of in-use barriers which occur after adoption and constrains the consumers existing use of MPP, and revealing the importance of the mobile in-hand momentary condition as an antecedent state. Additionally, the customer value perspective of this thesis demonstrates an alternative to the dominant Information Technology approaches to researching mobile payments and broadens the view of technology from purely an object a user interacts with to an object that is immersed in consumers’ daily life

Digital innovations can improve various business processes, such as production planning and control (PPC). In the last years, prescriptive maintenance (PxM) emerged as a strategy to increase overall production performance, but an alignment of the PPC process with PxM has not been examined yet. To tackle this problem, a PxM-aligned PPC process is designed and evaluated in this study using a reference model development methodology, including a narrative literature review, a multivocal literature review, and eight expert interviews. The reference model shows where process elements benefit from PxM alignment, how alignment can be achieved from a process and output, data, function, and organization view, and where fits and gaps between theory and practice are

Physical layer security in 5G and beyond wireless networks enabling technologies

Information security has always been a critical concern for wireless communications due to the broadcast nature of the open wireless medium. Commonly, security relies on cryptographic encryption techniques at higher layers to ensure information security. However, traditional cryptographic methods may be inadequate or inappropriate due to novel improvements in the computational power of devices and optimization approaches. Therefore, supplementary techniques are required to secure the transmission data. Physical layer security (PLS) can improve the security of wireless communications by exploiting the characteristics of wireless channels. Therefore, we study the PLS performance in the fifth generation (5G) and beyond wireless networks enabling technologies in this thesis. The thesis consists of three main parts. In the first part, the PLS design and analysis for Device-to-Device (D2D) communication is carried out for several scenarios. More specifically, in this part, we study the underlay relay-aided D2D communications to improve the PLS of the cellular network. We propose a cooperative scheme, whereby the D2D pair, in return for being allowed to share the spectrum band of the cellular network, serves as a friendly jammer using full-duplex (FD) and half-duplex (HD) transmissions and relay selection to degrade the wiretapped signal at an eavesdropper. This part aims to show that spectrum sharing is advantageous for both D2D communications and cellular networks concerning reliability and robustness for the former and PLS enhancement for the latter. Closed-form expressions for the D2D outage probability, the secrecy outage probability (SOP), and the probability of non-zero secrecy capacity (PNSC) are derived to assess the proposed cooperative system model. The results show enhancing the robustness and reliability of D2D communication while simultaneously improving the cellular network’s PLS by generating jamming signals towards the eavesdropper. Furthermore, intensive Monte-Carlo simulations and numerical results are provided to verify the efficiency of the proposed schemes and validate the derived expressions’ accuracy. In the second part, we consider a secure underlay cognitive radio (CR) network in the presence of a primary passive eavesdropper. Herein, a secondary multi-antenna full-duplex destination node acts as a jammer to the primary eavesdropper to improve the PLS of the primary network. In return for this favor, the energy-constrained secondary source gets access to the primary network to transmit its information so long as the interference to the latter is below a certain level. As revealed in our analysis and simulation, the reliability and robustness of the CR network are improved, while the security level of the primary network is enhanced concurrently. Finally, we investigate the PLS design and analysis of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided wireless communication systems in an inband underlay D2D communication and the CR network. An RIS is used to adjust its reflecting elements to enhance the data transmission while improving the PLS concurrently. Furthermore, we investigate the design of active elements in RIS to overcome the double-fading problem introduced in the RISaided link in a wireless communications system. Towards this end, each active RIS element amplifies the reflected incident signal rather than only reflecting it as done in passive RIS modules. As revealed in our analysis and simulation, the use of active elements leads to a drastic reduction in the size of RIS to achieve a given performance level. Furthermore, a practical design for active RIS is proposed

Network Slicing for Industrial IoT and Industrial Wireless Sensor Network: Deep Federated Learning Approach and Its Implementation Challenges

5G networks are envisioned to support heterogeneous Industrial IoT (IIoT) and Industrial Wireless Sensor Network (IWSN) applications with a multitude Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. Network slicing is being recognized as a beacon technology that enables multi-service IIoT networks. Motivated by the growing computational capacity of the IIoT and the challenges of meeting QoS, federated reinforcement learning (RL) has become a propitious technique that gives out data collection and computation tasks to distributed network agents. This chapter discuss the new federated learning paradigm and then proposes a Deep Federated RL (DFRL) scheme to provide a federated network resource management for future IIoT networks. Toward this goal, the DFRL learns from Multi-Agent local models and provides them the ability to find optimal action decisions on LoRa parameters that satisfy QoS to IIoT virtual slice. Simulation results prove the effectiveness of the proposed framework compared to the early tools
