    The highD Dataset: A Drone Dataset of Naturalistic Vehicle Trajectories on German Highways for Validation of Highly Automated Driving Systems

    Scenario-based testing for the safety validation of highly automated vehicles is a promising approach that is being examined in research and industry. This approach heavily relies on data from real-world scenarios to derive the necessary scenario information for testing. Measurement data should be collected at a reasonable effort, contain naturalistic behavior of road users and include all data relevant for a description of the identified scenarios in sufficient quality. However, the current measurement methods fail to meet at least one of the requirements. Thus, we propose a novel method to measure data from an aerial perspective for scenario-based validation fulfilling the mentioned requirements. Furthermore, we provide a large-scale naturalistic vehicle trajectory dataset from German highways called highD. We evaluate the data in terms of quantity, variety and contained scenarios. Our dataset consists of 16.5 hours of measurements from six locations with 110 000 vehicles, a total driven distance of 45 000 km and 5600 recorded complete lane changes.     Trajectory-Based Spatiotemporal Entity Linking

    Trajectory-based spatiotemporal entity linking is to match the same moving object in different datasets based on their movement traces. It is a fundamental step to support spatiotemporal data integration and analysis. In this paper, we study the problem of spatiotemporal entity linking using effective and concise signatures extracted from their trajectories. This linking problem is formalized as a k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) query on the signatures. Four representation strategies (sequential, temporal, spatial, and spatiotemporal) and two quantitative criteria (commonality and unicity) are investigated for signature construction. A simple yet effective dimension reduction strategy is developed together with a novel indexing structure called the WR-tree to speed up the search. A number of optimization methods are proposed to improve the accuracy and robustness of the linking. Our extensive experiments on real-world datasets verify the superiority of our approach over the state-of-the-art solutions in terms of both accuracy and efficiency.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, 15 table

    The Economics of the Internet of Things in the Global South

    While the Internet of Things (IoT) is not new, its key components are becoming increasingly affordable now, which makes the technology extremely attractive for the Global South. By collecting data from various IoT sources, combining them with data from other sources and using big data analytics, decisions can be made and actions can be taken that can have important economic, social, ecological and environmental implications in these countries. The most visible impacts of the IoT in these countries include improvements in agricultural and food systems, enhancement of environmental security and resource conservation, achievement of better healthcare, public health and medicine, and enhancement of the efficiency of key industries. This paper provides an overview of how the IoT is currently being used in the Global South. It also discusses the opportunities and challenges that IoT initiatives present there. The analysis indicates that the IoT may address some of the institutional bottlenecks, technological challenges and key sources of high transaction costs. On the other hand, various sources of underdevelopment may act as barriers to full utilisation of the IoT

    Information management and security protection for internet of vehicles

    Considering the huge number of vehicles on the roads, the Internet of Vehicles is envisioned to foster a variety of new applications ranging from road safety enhancement to mobile entertainment. These new applications all face critical challenges which are how to handle a large volume of data streams of various kinds and how the secure architecture enhances the security of the Internet of Vehicles systems. This dissertation proposes a comprehensive message routing solution to provide the fundamental support of information management for the Internet of Vehicles. The proposed approach delivers messages via a self-organized moving-zone-based architecture formed using pure vehicle-to-vehicle communication and integrates moving object modeling and indexing techniques to vehicle management. It can significantly reduce the communication overhead while providing higher delivery rates. To ensure the identity and location privacy of the vehicles on the Internet of Vehicles environment, a highly efficient randomized authentication protocol, RAU+ is proposed to leverage homomorphic encryption and enable individual vehicles to easily generate a new randomized identity for each newly established communication while each authentication server would not know their real identities. In this way, not any single party can track the user. To minimize the infrastructure reliance, this dissertation further proposes a secure and lightweight identity management mechanism in which vehicles only need to contact a central authority once to obtain a global identity. Vehicles take turns serving as the captain authentication unit in self-organized groups. The local identities are computed from the vehicle's global identity and do not reveal true identities. Extensive experiments are conducted under a variety of Internet of Vehicles environments. The experimental results demonstrate the practicality, effectiveness, and efficiency of the proposed protocols.Includes bibliographical references

    Establishing effective and economical traffic surveillance in Tonga

    The Pacific Islands are seriously challenged by the growth in wealth and the expansion of international material possessions. On the roads traffic has grown dramatically and the types of vehicles now using Island roads has greatly changed. With the importation of cheap second hand vehicles designed for freeway speeds serious safety issues have grown proportionally with the increasing numbers. In this research we consider the prohibitive costs of traditional traffic controls to economy and propose a light weight highly mobile aerial surveillance system that integrates with ground policing capability. Our research question was: How can road safety and security be enhanced with economical technologies? In addition to collecting and processing live data we have also designed a forensically ready system, and an information system to process the large amounts of data generated by the addition of these technologies into the traffic surveillance processes
