    Timing-Error Tolerance Techniques for Low-Power DSP: Filters and Transforms

    Low-power Digital Signal Processing (DSP) circuits are critical to commercial System-on-Chip design for battery powered devices. Dynamic Voltage Scaling (DVS) of digital circuits can reclaim worst-case supply voltage margins for delay variation, reducing power consumption. However, removing static margins without compromising robustness is tremendously challenging, especially in an era of escalating reliability concerns due to continued process scaling. The Razor DVS scheme addresses these concerns, by ensuring robustness using explicit timing-error detection and correction circuits. Nonetheless, the design of low-complexity and low-power error correction is often challenging. In this thesis, the Razor framework is applied to fixed-precision DSP filters and transforms. The inherent error tolerance of many DSP algorithms is exploited to achieve very low-overhead error correction. Novel error correction schemes for DSP datapaths are proposed, with very low-overhead circuit realisations. Two new approximate error correction approaches are proposed. The first is based on an adapted sum-of-products form that prevents errors in intermediate results reaching the output, while the second approach forces errors to occur only in less significant bits of each result by shaping the critical path distribution. A third approach is described that achieves exact error correction using time borrowing techniques on critical paths. Unlike previously published approaches, all three proposed are suitable for high clock frequency implementations, as demonstrated with fully placed and routed FIR, FFT and DCT implementations in 90nm and 32nm CMOS. Design issues and theoretical modelling are presented for each approach, along with SPICE simulation results demonstrating power savings of 21 – 29%. Finally, the design of a baseband transmitter in 32nm CMOS for the Spectrally Efficient FDM (SEFDM) system is presented. SEFDM systems offer bandwidth savings compared to Orthogonal FDM (OFDM), at the cost of increased complexity and power consumption, which is quantified with the first VLSI architecture

    Multiple bit error correcting architectures over finite fields

    This thesis proposes techniques to mitigate multiple bit errors in GF arithmetic circuits. As GF arithmetic circuits such as multipliers constitute the complex and important functional unit of a crypto-processor, making them fault tolerant will improve the reliability of circuits that are employed in safety applications and the errors may cause catastrophe if not mitigated. Firstly, a thorough literature review has been carried out. The merits of efficient schemes are carefully analyzed to study the space for improvement in error correction, area and power consumption. Proposed error correction schemes include bit parallel ones using optimized BCH codes that are useful in applications where power and area are not prime concerns. The scheme is also extended to dynamically correcting scheme to reduce decoder delay. Other method that suits low power and area applications such as RFIDs and smart cards using cross parity codes is also proposed. The experimental evaluation shows that the proposed techniques can mitigate single and multiple bit errors with wider error coverage compared to existing methods with lesser area and power consumption. The proposed scheme is used to mask the errors appearing at the output of the circuit irrespective of their cause. This thesis also investigates the error mitigation schemes in emerging technologies (QCA, CNTFET) to compare area, power and delay with existing CMOS equivalent. Though the proposed novel multiple error correcting techniques can not ensure 100% error mitigation, inclusion of these techniques to actual design can improve the reliability of the circuits or increase the difficulty in hacking crypto-devices. Proposed schemes can also be extended to non GF digital circuits

    Truncated Binary Multipliers with minimum Mean Square Error: analytical characterization, circuit implementation and applications

    In the wireless multimedia word, DSP systems are ubiquitous. DSP algorithms are computationally intensive and test the limits of battery life in portable device such as cell phones, hearing aids, MP3 players, digital video recorders and so on. Multiplication and squaring are the main operation in many signal processing algorithms (filtering, convolution, FFT, DCT, euclidean distance etc.), hence efficient parallel multipliers are desirable. A full-width digital nxn bits multiplier computes the 2n bits output as a weighted sum of partial products. A multiplier with the output represented on n bits output is useful, as example, in DSP datapaths which saves the output in the same n bits registers of the input. Note that the truncated multipliers are useful not only for DSP but also for digital, computational intensive, ASICs where the bit-widths at the output of the arithmetic blocks are chosen on the basis of system-related accuracy issues. Hence 2n bits of precision at the multiplier output are very often more than required. A truncated multiplier is an nxn multiplier with n bits output. Since in a truncated multiplier the n less-significant bits of the full-width product are discarded, some of the partial products are removed and replaced by a suitable compensation function, to trade-off accuracy with hardware cost. Several techniques have been proposed in the Literature following this basic idea. The difference between the various circuits is in the choice and the implementation of the compensation circuit. The correction techniques proposed in the Literature are obtained through exhaustive search. This means that the results are only available for small n values and that the proposed approach are not extendable to greater bit widths. Furthermore the analytical characterization of the error is not possible. In this dissertation an innovative solution for the design and characterization of truncated multipliers is presented. The proposed circuits are based on the analytical calculation of the error of the truncated multiplier. This approach allows to have the description of a multiplier characterized by a minimum mean square error which gives a fast and low power VLSI implementation. Furthermore the analytical approach yields to a closed form expression of the mean square error and maximum absolute error for the proposed truncated multipliers. In this way the a priori knowledge of the output error is available. The errors are known for every bit width of the multiplier and it is also possible to decide, for a given bit width, which correction circuit has to be used in order to obtain a certain error. This analytical relation between the error and the parameters of hardware implementation is extremely important for the digital designer, since now it is possible to select the suitable implementation as a function of the desired accuracy. Proposed truncated multipliers overcome the previously proposed truncated multipliers since provide lower error, lower power dissipation, lower area occupation and also provide higher working frequency. The circuits are also easily implemented and allow an automatic HDL description as a function of bit width and desired error. The complete description of the errors for the truncated multipliers allows the use of these circuits as building blocks for more complex systems. It will be shown how the proposed multiplier can be used to design low area occupation FIR filters and an efficient PI temperature controller

    Digital Offset Calibration of an OPAMP Towards Improving Static Parameters of 90 nm CMOS DAC

    In this paper, an on-chip self-calibrated 8-bit R-2R digital-to-analog converter (DAC) based on digitally compensated input offset of the operational amplifier (OPAMP) is presented. To improve the overall DAC performance, a digital offset cancellation method was used to compensate deviations in the input offset voltage of the OPAMP caused by process variations. The whole DAC as well as offset compensation circuitry were designed in a standard 90 nm CMOS process. The achieved results show that after the self-calibration process, the improvement of 48% in the value of DAC offset error is achieved

    Design of reverse converters for the multi-moduli residue number systems with moduli of forms 2a, 2b - 1, 2c + 1

    Residue number system (RNS) is a non-weighted integer number representation system that is capable of supporting parallel, carry-free and high speed arithmetic. This system is error-resilient and facilitates error detection, error correction and fault tolerance in digital systems. It finds applications in Digital Signal Processing (DSP) intensive computations like digital filtering, convolution, correlation, Discrete Fourier Transform, Fast Fourier Transform, etc. The basis for an RNS system is a moduli set consisting of relatively prime integers. Proper selection of this moduli set plays a significant role in RNS design because the speed of internal RNS arithmetic circuits as well as the speed and complexity of the residue to binary converter (R/B or Reverse Converter) have a large dependency on the form and number of the selected moduli. Moduli of forms 2a, 2b- 1, 2c + 1 (a, b and c are natural numbers) have the most use in RNS moduli sets as these moduli can be efficiently implemented using usual binary hardware that lead to simple design. Another important consideration for the reverse converter design is the selection of an appropriate conversion algorithm from Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT), Mixed Radix Conversion (MRC) and the new Chinese Remainder Theorems (New CRT I and New CRT II). This research is focused on designing reverse converters for the multi-moduli RNS sets especially four and five moduli sets with moduli of forms 2a, 2b- 1, 2c + 1 . The residue to binary converters are designed by applying the above conversion algorithms in different possible ways and facilitating the use of modulo (2k) and modulo (2k – 1) adders that lead to simple design of adder based architectures and VLSI efficient implementations (k is a natural number). The area and delay of the proposed converters is analyzed and an efficient reverse converter is suggested from each of the various four and five moduli set converters for a given dynamic range

    In-system Jitter Measurement Based on Blind Oversampling Data Recovery

    The paper describes a novel method for simple estimation of jitter contained in a received digital signal. The main objective of our research was to enable a non-invasive measurement of data link properties during a regular data transmission. To evaluate the signal quality we estimate amount of jitter contained in the received signal by utilizing internal signals of a data recovery circuit. The method is a pure digital algorithm suitable for implementation in any digital integrated circuit (ASIC or FPGA). It is based on a blind-oversampling data recovery circuit which is used in some receivers instead of a traditional PLL-based clock and data recovery (CDR) circuit. Combination of the described jitter measurement block and the data recovery block forms a very efficient input part of the digital receiver. In such configuration it is able to simultaneously perform both data communication (data recovery) and signal quality estimation (jitter measurement). The jitter measurement portion of the receiver requires no special connection of the received data signal. Thus the measured signal is not influenced by the measurement circuitry at all. To verify the method we performed a measurement on a laboratory free-space optics link. Results of the measurement are satisfactory and can be used for on-line channel analysis

    CMOS transceiver with baud rate clock recovery for optical interconnects

    An efficient baud rate clock and data recovery architecture is applied to a double sampling/integrating front-end receiver for optical interconnects. Receiver performance is analyzed and projected for future technologies. This front-end allows use of a 1:5 demux architecture to achieve 5Gb/s in a 0.25 μm CMOS process. A 5:1 multiplexing transmitter is used to drive VCSELs for optical transmission. The transceiver chip consumes 145mW per link at 5Gb/s with a 2.5V supply
