    The Potential of Restarts for ProbSAT

    This work analyses the potential of restarts for probSAT, a quite successful algorithm for k-SAT, by estimating its runtime distributions on random 3-SAT instances that are close to the phase transition. We estimate an optimal restart time from empirical data, reaching a potential speedup factor of 1.39. Calculating restart times from fitted probability distributions reduces this factor to a maximum of 1.30. A spin-off result is that the Weibull distribution approximates the runtime distribution for over 93% of the used instances well. A machine learning pipeline is presented to compute a restart time for a fixed-cutoff strategy to exploit this potential. The main components of the pipeline are a random forest for determining the distribution type and a neural network for the distribution's parameters. ProbSAT performs statistically significantly better than Luby's restart strategy and the policy without restarts when using the presented approach.     On the analysis of the timing behaviour of time randomised caches

    Time Randomised caches (TRc), which can be implemented at hardware level or with software means on conventional deterministic cache designs, have been proposed for real-time systems as key enablers for Probabilistic Timing Analysis (PTA) and in particular its measurement-based variant: Measurement-Based Probabilistic Timing Analysis (MBPTA). A key parameter of MBPTA is the number of runs required to ensure representativity of the execution time measurements taken at analysis time with respect to execution times that can occur during system deployment, so that MBPTA can trustworthily be applied. In this thesis, we propose several methods to determine whether the number of observations taken at analysis, as part of the normal MBPTA application process, capture the cache events significantly impacting execution time and Worst-Case Execution Time (WCET). If this is not the case, our techniques provide the user with the number of extra runs required so that cache events are captured ensuring trustworthiness on MBPTA provided WCET estimates. Our techniques have been evaluated using a set of synthetic benchmarks and a real avionics application

    Utility-Aware Scheduling of Stochastic Real-Time Systems

    Time utility functions offer a reasonably general way to describe the complex timing constraints of real-time and cyber-physical systems. However, utility-aware scheduling policy design is an open research problem. In particular, scheduling policies that optimize expected utility accrual are needed for real-time and cyber-physical domains. This dissertation addresses the problem of utility-aware scheduling for systems with periodic real-time task sets and stochastic non-preemptive execution intervals. We model these systems as Markov Decision Processes. This model provides an evaluation framework by which different scheduling policies can be compared. By solving the Markov Decision Process we can derive value-optimal scheduling policies for moderate sized problems. However, the time and memory complexity of computing and storing value-optimal scheduling policies also necessitates the exploration of other more scalable solutions. We consider heuristic schedulers, including a generalization we have developed for the existing Utility Accrual Packet Scheduling Algorithm. We compare several heuristics under soft and hard real-time conditions, different load conditions, and different classes of time utility functions. Based on these evaluations we present guidelines for which heuristics are best suited to particular scheduling criteria. Finally, we address the memory complexity of value-optimal scheduling, and examine trade-offs between optimality and memory complexity. We show that it is possible to derive good low complexity scheduling decision functions based on a synthesis of heuristics and reduced-memory approximations of the value-optimal scheduling policy

    Analysis of Embedded Controllers Subject to Computational Overruns

    Microcontrollers have become an integral part of modern everyday embedded systems, such as smart bikes, cars, and drones. Typically, microcontrollers operate under real-time constraints, which require the timely execution of programs on the resource-constrained hardware. As embedded systems are becoming increasingly more complex, microcontrollers run the risk of violating their timing constraints, i.e., overrunning the program deadlines. Breaking these constraints can cause severe damage to both the embedded system and the humans interacting with the device. Therefore, it is crucial to analyse embedded systems properly to ensure that they do not pose any significant danger if the microcontroller overruns a few deadlines.However, there are very few tools available for assessing the safety and performance of embedded control systems when considering the implementation of the microcontroller. This thesis aims to fill this gap in the literature by presenting five papers on the analysis of embedded controllers subject to computational overruns. Details about the real-time operating system's implementation are included into the analysis, such as what happens to the controller's internal state representation when the timing constraints are violated. The contribution includes theoretical and computational tools for analysing the embedded system's stability, performance, and real-time properties.The embedded controller is analysed under three different types of timing violations: blackout events (when no control computation is completed during long periods), weakly-hard constraints (when the number of deadline overruns is constrained over a window), and stochastic overruns (when violations of timing constraints are governed by a probabilistic process). These scenarios are combined with different implementation policies to reduce the gap between the analysis and its practical applicability. The analyses are further validated with a comprehensive experimental campaign performed on both a set of physical processes and multiple simulations.In conclusion, the findings of this thesis reveal that the effect deadline overruns have on the embedded system heavily depends the implementation details and the system's dynamics. Additionally, the stability analysis of embedded controllers subject to deadline overruns is typically conservative, implying that additional insights can be gained by also analysing the system's performance

    Dynamic Energy Management of FPGA Accelerators in Embedded Systems

    In this article, we investigate how to utilise an Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) in an embedded system to save energy. For this purpose, we study the energy efficiency of a hybrid FPGA-CPU device that can switch task execution between hardware and software with a focus on periodic tasks. To increase the applicability of this task switching, we also consider the voltage and frequency scaling (VFS) applied to the FPGA to reduce the system energy consumption. We show that in some cases, if the task's period is higher than a specific level, the FPGA accelerator cannot reduce the energy consumption associated to the task and the software version is the most energy efficient option. We have applied the proposed techniques to a robot map creation algorithm as a case study which shows up to 38% energy reduction compared to the FPGA implementation. Overall, experimental results show up to 48% energy reduction by applying the proposed techniques at runtime on 13 individual tasks

    GPU devices for safety-critical systems: a survey

    Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) devices and their associated software programming languages and frameworks can deliver the computing performance required to facilitate the development of next-generation high-performance safety-critical systems such as autonomous driving systems. However, the integration of complex, parallel, and computationally demanding software functions with different safety-criticality levels on GPU devices with shared hardware resources contributes to several safety certification challenges.
