    Automated Structural-level Alignment of Multi-view TLS and ALS Point Clouds in Forestry

    Access to highly detailed models of heterogeneous forests from the near surface to above the tree canopy at varying scales is of increasing demand as it enables more advanced computational tools for analysis, planning, and ecosystem management. LiDAR sensors available through different scanning platforms including terrestrial, mobile and aerial have become established as one of the primary technologies for forest mapping due to their inherited capability to collect direct, precise and rapid 3D information of a scene. However, their scalability to large forest areas is highly dependent upon use of effective and efficient methods of co-registration of multiple scan sources. Surprisingly, work in forestry in GPS denied areas has mostly resorted to methods of co-registration that use reference based targets (e.g., reflective, marked trees), a process far from scalable in practice. In this work, we propose an effective, targetless and fully automatic method based on an incremental co-registration strategy matching and grouping points according to levels of structural complexity. Empirical evidence shows the method's effectiveness in aligning both TLS-to-TLS and TLS-to-ALS scans under a variety of ecosystem conditions including pre/post fire treatment effects, of interest to forest inventory surveyors

    A Study of Projections for Key Point Based Registration of Panoramic Terrestrial 3D Laser Scans

    Abstract This paper surveys state of the art image features and descriptors for the task of 3D scan registration based on panoramic reflectance images. As modern terrestrial laser scanners digitize their environment in a spherical way, the sphere has to be projected to a two-dimensional image. To this end, we evaluate the equirectangular, the cylindrical, the Mercator, the rectilinear, the Pannini, the stereographic, and the z-axis projection. We show that the Mercator and the Pannini projection outperform the other projection methods

    Morphology-based landslide monitoring with an unmanned aerial vehicle

    PhD ThesisLandslides represent major natural phenomena with often disastrous consequences. Monitoring landslides with time-series surface observations can help mitigate such hazards. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) employing compact digital cameras, and in conjunction with Structure-from-Motion (SfM) and modern Multi-View Stereo (MVS) image matching approaches, have become commonplace in the geoscience research community. These methods offer a relatively low-cost and flexible solution for many geomorphological applications. The SfM-MVS pipeline has expedited the generation of digital elevation models at high spatio-temporal resolution. Conventionally ground control points (GCPs) are required for co-registration. This task is often expensive and impracticable considering hazardous terrain. This research has developed a strategy for processing UAV visible wavelength imagery that can provide multi-temporal surface morphological information for landslide monitoring, in an attempt to overcome the reliance on GCPs. This morphological-based strategy applies the attribute of curvature in combination with the scale-invariant feature transform algorithm, to generate pseudo GCPs. Openness is applied to extract relatively stable regions whereby pseudo GCPs are selected. Image cross-correlation functions integrated with openness and slope are employed to track landslide motion with subsequent elevation differences and planimetric surface displacements produced. Accuracy assessment evaluates unresolved biases with the aid of benchmark datasets. This approach was tested in the UK, in two sites, first in Sandford with artificial surface change and then in an active landslide at Hollin Hill. In Sandford, the strategy detected a ±0.120 m 3D surface change from three-epoch SfM-MVS products derived from a consumer-grade UAV. For the Hollin Hill landslide six-epoch datasets spanning an eighteen-month duration period were used, providing a ± 0.221 m minimum change. Annual displacement rates of dm-level were estimated with optimal results over winter periods. Levels of accuracy and spatial resolution comparable to previous studies demonstrated the potential of the morphology-based strategy for a time-efficient and cost-effective monitoring at inaccessible areas

    Development of a SGM-based multi-view reconstruction framework for aerial imagery

    Advances in the technology of digital airborne camera systems allow for the observation of surfaces with sampling rates in the range of a few centimeters. In combination with novel matching approaches, which estimate depth information for virtually every pixel, surface reconstructions of impressive density and precision can be generated. Therefore, image based surface generation meanwhile is a serious alternative to LiDAR based data collection for many applications. Surface models serve as primary base for geographic products as for example map creation, production of true-ortho photos or visualization purposes within the framework of virtual globes. The goal of the presented theses is the development of a framework for the fully automatic generation of 3D surface models based on aerial images - both standard nadir as well as oblique views. This comprises several challenges. On the one hand dimensions of aerial imagery is considerable and the extend of the areas to be reconstructed can encompass whole countries. Beside scalability of methods this also requires decent processing times and efficient handling of the given hardware resources. Moreover, beside high precision requirements, a high degree of automation has to be guaranteed to limit manual interaction as much as possible. Due to the advantages of scalability, a stereo method is utilized in the presented thesis. The approach for dense stereo is based on an adapted version of the semi global matching (SGM) algorithm. Following a hierarchical approach corresponding image regions and meaningful disparity search ranges are identified. It will be verified that, dependent on undulations of the scene, time and memory demands can be reduced significantly, by up to 90% within some of the conducted tests. This enables the processing of aerial datasets on standard desktop machines in reasonable times even for large fields of depth. Stereo approaches generate disparity or depth maps, in which redundant depth information is available. To exploit this redundancy, a method for the refinement of stereo correspondences is proposed. Thereby redundant observations across stereo models are identified, checked for geometric consistency and their reprojection error is minimized. This way outliers are removed and precision of depth estimates is improved. In order to generate consistent surfaces, two algorithms for depth map fusion were developed. The first fusion strategy aims for the generation of 2.5D height models, also known as digital surface models (DSM). The proposed method improves existing methods regarding quality in areas of depth discontinuities, for example at roof edges. Utilizing benchmarks designed for the evaluation of image based DSM generation we show that the developed approaches favorably compare to state-of-the-art algorithms and that height precisions of few GSDs can be achieved. Furthermore, methods for the derivation of meshes based on DSM data are discussed. The fusion of depth maps for 3D scenes, as e.g. frequently required during evaluation of high resolution oblique aerial images in complex urban environments, demands for a different approach since scenes can in general not be represented as height fields. Moreover, depths across depth maps possess varying precision and sampling rates due to variances in image scale, errors in orientation and other effects. Within this thesis a median-based fusion methodology is proposed. By using geometry-adaptive triangulation of depth maps depth-wise normals are extracted and, along the point coordinates are filtered and fused using tree structures. The output of this method are oriented points which then can be used to generate meshes. Precision and density of the method will be evaluated using established multi-view benchmarks. Beside the capability to process close range datasets, results for large oblique airborne data sets will be presented. The report closes with a summary, discussion of limitations and perspectives regarding improvements and enhancements. The implemented algorithms are core elements of the commercial software package SURE, which is freely available for scientific purposes

    Remote sensing technology applications in forestry and REDD+

    Advances in close-range and remote sensing technologies are driving innovations in forest resource assessments and monitoring on varying scales. Data acquired with airborne and spaceborne platforms provide high(er) spatial resolution, more frequent coverage, and more spectral information. Recent developments in ground-based sensors have advanced 3D measurements, low-cost permanent systems, and community-based monitoring of forests. The UNFCCC REDD+ mechanism has advanced the remote sensing community and the development of forest geospatial products that can be used by countries for the international reporting and national forest monitoring. However, an urgent need remains to better understand the options and limitations of remote and close-range sensing techniques in the field of forest degradation and forest change. Therefore, we invite scientists working on remote sensing technologies, close-range sensing, and field data to contribute to this Special Issue. Topics of interest include: (1) novel remote sensing applications that can meet the needs of forest resource information and REDD+ MRV, (2) case studies of applying remote sensing data for REDD+ MRV, (3) timeseries algorithms and methodologies for forest resource assessment on different spatial scales varying from the tree to the national level, and (4) novel close-range sensing applications that can support sustainable forestry and REDD+ MRV. We particularly welcome submissions on data fusion

    Insights into temperature controls on rockfall occurrence and cliff erosion

    A variety of environmental triggers have been associated with the occurrence of rockfalls however their role and relative significance remains poorly constrained. This is in part due to the lack of concurrent data on rockfall occurrence and cliff face conditions at temporal resolutions that mirror the variability of environmental conditions, and over durations for large enough numbers of rockfall events to be captured. The aim of this thesis is to fill this data gap, and then to specifically focus on the role of temperature in triggering rockfall that this data illuminates. To achieve this, a long-term multiannual 3D rockfall dataset and contemporaneous Infrared Thermography (IRT) monitoring of cliff surface temperatures has been generated. The approaches used in this thesis are undertaken at East Cliff, Whitby, which is a coastal cliff located in North Yorkshire, UK. The monitored section is ~ 200 m wide and ~65 m high, with a total cliff face area of ~9,592 m². A method for the automated quantification of rockfall volumes is used to explore data collected between 2017–2019 and 2021, with the resulting inventory including > 8,300 rockfalls from 2017–2019 and > 4,100 rockfalls in 2021, totalling > 12,400 number of rockfalls. The analysis of the inventory demonstrates that during dry conditions, increases in rockfall frequency are coincident with diurnal surface temperature fluctuations, notably at sunrise, noon and sunset in all seasons, leading to a marked diurnal pattern of rockfall. Statistically significant relationships are observed to link cliff temperature and rockfall, highlighting the response of rock slopes to absolute temperatures and changes in temperature. This research also shows that inclement weather constitutes the dominant control over the annual production of rockfalls but also quantifies the period when temperature controls are dominant. Temperature-controlled rockfall activity is shown to have an important erosional role, particularly in periods of iterative erosion dominated by small size rockfalls. As such, this thesis provides for the first high-resolution evidence of temperature controls on rockfall activity, cliff erosion and landform development

    Geomorphometry 2020. Conference Proceedings

    Geomorphometry is the science of quantitative land surface analysis. It gathers various mathematical, statistical and image processing techniques to quantify morphological, hydrological, ecological and other aspects of a land surface. Common synonyms for geomorphometry are geomorphological analysis, terrain morphometry or terrain analysis and land surface analysis. The typical input to geomorphometric analysis is a square-grid representation of the land surface: a digital elevation (or land surface) model. The first Geomorphometry conference dates back to 2009 and it took place in Zürich, Switzerland. Subsequent events were in Redlands (California), Nánjīng (China), Poznan (Poland) and Boulder (Colorado), at about two years intervals. The International Society for Geomorphometry (ISG) and the Organizing Committee scheduled the sixth Geomorphometry conference in Perugia, Italy, June 2020. Worldwide safety measures dictated the event could not be held in presence, and we excluded the possibility to hold the conference remotely. Thus, we postponed the event by one year - it will be organized in June 2021, in Perugia, hosted by the Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection of the Italian National Research Council (CNR IRPI) and the Department of Physics and Geology of the University of Perugia. One of the reasons why we postponed the conference, instead of canceling, was the encouraging number of submitted abstracts. Abstracts are actually short papers consisting of four pages, including figures and references, and they were peer-reviewed by the Scientific Committee of the conference. This book is a collection of the contributions revised by the authors after peer review. We grouped them in seven classes, as follows: • Data and methods (13 abstracts) • Geoheritage (6 abstracts) • Glacial processes (4 abstracts) • LIDAR and high resolution data (8 abstracts) • Morphotectonics (8 abstracts) • Natural hazards (12 abstracts) • Soil erosion and fluvial processes (16 abstracts) The 67 abstracts represent 80% of the initial contributions. The remaining ones were either not accepted after peer review or withdrawn by their Authors. Most of the contributions contain original material, and an extended version of a subset of them will be included in a special issue of a regular journal publication
