    Computation with Polynomial Equations and Inequalities arising in Combinatorial Optimization

    The purpose of this note is to survey a methodology to solve systems of polynomial equations and inequalities. The techniques we discuss use the algebra of multivariate polynomials with coefficients over a field to create large-scale linear algebra or semidefinite programming relaxations of many kinds of feasibility or optimization questions.     Faster SDP hierarchy solvers for local rounding algorithms

    Convex relaxations based on different hierarchies of linear/semi-definite programs have been used recently to devise approximation algorithms for various optimization problems. The approximation guarantee of these algorithms improves with the number of {\em rounds} rr in the hierarchy, though the complexity of solving (or even writing down the solution for) the rr'th level program grows as nΩ(r)n^{\Omega(r)} where nn is the input size. In this work, we observe that many of these algorithms are based on {\em local} rounding procedures that only use a small part of the SDP solution (of size nO(1)2O(r)n^{O(1)} 2^{O(r)} instead of nΩ(r)n^{\Omega(r)}). We give an algorithm to find the requisite portion in time polynomial in its size. The challenge in achieving this is that the required portion of the solution is not fixed a priori but depends on other parts of the solution, sometimes in a complicated iterative manner. Our solver leads to nO(1)2O(r)n^{O(1)} 2^{O(r)} time algorithms to obtain the same guarantees in many cases as the earlier nO(r)n^{O(r)} time algorithms based on rr rounds of the Lasserre hierarchy. In particular, guarantees based on O(log⁥n)O(\log n) rounds can be realized in polynomial time. We develop and describe our algorithm in a fairly general abstract framework. The main technical tool in our work, which might be of independent interest in convex optimization, is an efficient ellipsoid algorithm based separation oracle for convex programs that can output a {\em certificate of infeasibility with restricted support}. This is used in a recursive manner to find a sequence of consistent points in nested convex bodies that "fools" local rounding algorithms.Comment: 30 pages, 8 figure

    There exist efficient algorithms to project a point onto the intersection of a convex cone and an affine subspace. Those conic projections are in turn the work-horse of a range of algorithms in conic optimization, having a variety of applications in science, finance and engineering. This chapter reviews some of these algorithms, emphasizing the so-called regularization algorithms for linear conic optimization, and applications in polynomial optimization. This is a presentation of the material of several recent research articles; we aim here at clarifying the ideas, presenting them in a general framework, and pointing out important techniques

    Using Optimization to Obtain a Width-Independent, Parallel, Simpler, and Faster Positive SDP Solver

    We study the design of polylogarithmic depth algorithms for approximately solving packing and covering semidefinite programs (or positive SDPs for short). This is a natural SDP generalization of the well-studied positive LP problem. Although positive LPs can be solved in polylogarithmic depth while using only O~(log⁥2n/Δ2)\tilde{O}(\log^{2} n/\varepsilon^2) parallelizable iterations, the best known positive SDP solvers due to Jain and Yao require O(log⁥14n/Δ13)O(\log^{14} n /\varepsilon^{13}) parallelizable iterations. Several alternative solvers have been proposed to reduce the exponents in the number of iterations. However, the correctness of the convergence analyses in these works has been called into question, as they both rely on algebraic monotonicity properties that do not generalize to matrix algebra. In this paper, we propose a very simple algorithm based on the optimization framework proposed for LP solvers. Our algorithm only needs O~(log⁥2n/Δ2)\tilde{O}(\log^2 n / \varepsilon^2) iterations, matching that of the best LP solver. To surmount the obstacles encountered by previous approaches, our analysis requires a new matrix inequality that extends Lieb-Thirring's inequality, and a sign-consistent, randomized variant of the gradient truncation technique proposed in

    Limitations of semidefinite programs for separable states and entangled games

    Semidefinite programs (SDPs) are a framework for exact or approximate optimization that have widespread application in quantum information theory. We introduce a new method for using reductions to construct integrality gaps for SDPs. These are based on new limitations on the sum-of-squares (SoS) hierarchy in approximating two particularly important sets in quantum information theory, where previously no ω(1)\omega(1)-round integrality gaps were known: the set of separable (i.e. unentangled) states, or equivalently, the 2→42 \rightarrow 4 norm of a matrix, and the set of quantum correlations; i.e. conditional probability distributions achievable with local measurements on a shared entangled state. In both cases no-go theorems were previously known based on computational assumptions such as the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH) which asserts that 3-SAT requires exponential time to solve. Our unconditional results achieve the same parameters as all of these previous results (for separable states) or as some of the previous results (for quantum correlations). In some cases we can make use of the framework of Lee-Raghavendra-Steurer (LRS) to establish integrality gaps for any SDP, not only the SoS hierarchy. Our hardness result on separable states also yields a dimension lower bound of approximate disentanglers, answering a question of Watrous and Aaronson et al. These results can be viewed as limitations on the monogamy principle, the PPT test, the ability of Tsirelson-type bounds to restrict quantum correlations, as well as the SDP hierarchies of Doherty-Parrilo-Spedalieri, Navascues-Pironio-Acin and Berta-Fawzi-Scholz.Comment: 47 pages. v2. small changes, fixes and clarifications. published versio

    A Class of Semidefinite Programs with rank-one solutions

    We show that a class of semidefinite programs (SDP) admits a solution that is a positive semidefinite matrix of rank at most rr, where rr is the rank of the matrix involved in the objective function of the SDP. The optimization problems of this class are semidefinite packing problems, which are the SDP analogs to vector packing problems. Of particular interest is the case in which our result guarantees the existence of a solution of rank one: we show that the computation of this solution actually reduces to a Second Order Cone Program (SOCP).     Network of Time-Multiplexed Optical Parametric Oscillators as a Coherent Ising Machine

    Finding the ground states of the Ising Hamiltonian [1] maps to various combinatorial optimization problems in biology, medicine, wireless communications, artificial intelligence, and social network. So far no efficient classical and quantum algorithm is known for these problems, and intensive research is focused on creating physical systems - Ising machines - capable of finding the absolute or approximate ground states of the Ising Hamiltonian [2-6]. Here we report a novel Ising machine using a network of degenerate optical parametric oscillators (OPOs). Spins are represented with above-threshold binary phases of the OPOs and the Ising couplings are realized by mutual injections [7]. The network is implemented in a single OPO ring cavity with multiple trains of femtosecond pulses and configurable mutual couplings, and operates at room temperature. We programed the smallest non-deterministic polynomial time (NP)- hard Ising problem on the machine, and in 1000 runs of the machine no computational error was detected
