ATMSeer: Increasing Transparency and Controllability in Automated Machine Learning
To relieve the pain of manually selecting machine learning algorithms and
tuning hyperparameters, automated machine learning (AutoML) methods have been
developed to automatically search for good models. Due to the huge model search
space, it is impossible to try all models. Users tend to distrust automatic
results and increase the search budget as much as they can, thereby undermining
the efficiency of AutoML. To address these issues, we design and implement
ATMSeer, an interactive visualization tool that supports users in refining the
search space of AutoML and analyzing the results. To guide the design of
ATMSeer, we derive a workflow of using AutoML based on interviews with machine
learning experts. A multi-granularity visualization is proposed to enable users
to monitor the AutoML process, analyze the searched models, and refine the
search space in real time. We demonstrate the utility and usability of ATMSeer
through two case studies, expert interviews, and a user study with 13 end

CLPGUI: a generic graphical user interface for constraint logic programming over finite domains
CLPGUI is a graphical user interface for visualizing and interacting with
constraint logic programs over finite domains. In CLPGUI, the user can control
the execution of a CLP program through several views of constraints, of finite
domain variables and of the search tree. CLPGUI is intended to be used both for
teaching purposes, and for debugging and improving complex programs of
realworld scale. It is based on a client-server architecture for connecting the
CLP process to a Java-based GUI process. Communication by message passing
provides an open architecture which facilitates the reuse of graphical
components and the porting to different constraint programming systems.
Arbitrary constraints and goals can be posted incrementally from the GUI. We
propose several dynamic 2D and 3D visualizations of the search tree and of the
evolution of finite domain variables. We argue that the 3D representation of
search trees proposed in this paper provides the most appropriate visualization
of large search trees. We describe the current implementation of the
annotations and of the interactive execution model in GNU-Prolog, and report

Tools for Search Tree Visualization: The APT Tool
The control part of the execution of a constraint logic program can be conceptually shown as a search-tree, where nodes correspond to calis, and whose branches represent conjunctions and disjunctions. This tree represents the search space traversed by the program, and has also a direct
relationship with the amount of work performed by the program. The nodes of the tree can be used to display information regarding the state and origin of instantiation of the variables involved in each cali. This depiction can also be used for the enumeration process. These are the features implemented in APT, a tool which runs constraint logic programs while depicting a (modified) search-tree, keeping at the same time information about the state of the variables at every moment in the execution. This information can be used to replay the execution at will, both forwards and backwards in time. These views can be abstracted when the size of the execution requires it. The search-tree view is used as a framework onto which constraint-level visualizations (such as those presented in the following chapter) can be attached
Using Visualization to Support Data Mining of Large Existing Databases
In this paper. we present ideas how visualization technology can be used to improve the difficult process of querying very large databases. With our VisDB system, we try to provide visual support not only for the query specification process. but also for evaluating query results and. thereafter, refining the query accordingly. The main idea of our system is to represent as many data items as possible by the pixels of the display device. By arranging and coloring the pixels according to the relevance for the query, the user gets a visual impression of the resulting data set and of its relevance for the query. Using an interactive query interface, the user may change the query dynamically and receives immediate feedback by the visual representation of the resulting data set. By using multiple windows for different parts of the query, the user gets visual feedback for each part of the query and, therefore, may easier understand the overall result. To support complex queries, we introduce the notion of approximate joins which allow the user to find data items that only approximately fulfill join conditions. We also present ideas how our technique may be extended to support the interoperation of heterogeneous databases. Finally, we discuss the performance problems that are caused by interfacing to existing database systems and present ideas to solve these problems by using data structures supporting a multidimensional search of the database
Using High-Rising Cities to Visualize Performance in Real-Time
For developers concerned with a performance drop or improvement in their
software, a profiler allows a developer to quickly search and identify
bottlenecks and leaks that consume much execution time. Non real-time profilers
analyze the history of already executed stack traces, while a real-time
profiler outputs the results concurrently with the execution of software, so
users can know the results instantaneously. However, a real-time profiler risks
providing overly large and complex outputs, which is difficult for developers
to quickly analyze. In this paper, we visualize the performance data from a
real-time profiler. We visualize program execution as a three-dimensional (3D)
city, representing the structure of the program as artifacts in a city (i.e.,
classes and packages expressed as buildings and districts) and their program
executions expressed as the fluctuating height of artifacts. Through two case
studies and using a prototype of our proposed visualization, we demonstrate how
our visualization can easily identify performance issues such as a memory leak
and compare performance changes between versions of a program. A demonstration
