I2PA, U-prove, and Idemix: An Evaluation of Memory Usage and Computing Time Efficiency in an IoT Context
The Internet of Things (IoT), in spite of its innumerable advantages, brings
many challenges namely issues about users' privacy preservation and constraints
about lightweight cryptography. Lightweight cryptography is of capital
importance since IoT devices are qualified to be resource-constrained. To
address these challenges, several Attribute-Based Credentials (ABC) schemes
have been designed including I2PA, U-prove, and Idemix. Even though these
schemes have very strong cryptographic bases, their performance in
resource-constrained devices is a question that deserves special attention.
This paper aims to conduct a performance evaluation of these schemes on
issuance and verification protocols regarding memory usage and computing time.
Recorded results show that both I2PA and U-prove present very interesting
results regarding memory usage and computing time while Idemix presents very
low performance with regard to computing time
Computational and Energy Costs of Cryptographic Algorithms on Handheld Devices
Networks are evolving toward a ubiquitous model in which heterogeneous
devices are interconnected. Cryptographic algorithms are required for developing security
solutions that protect network activity. However, the computational and energy limitations
of network devices jeopardize the actual implementation of such mechanisms. In this
paper, we perform a wide analysis on the expenses of launching symmetric and asymmetric
cryptographic algorithms, hash chain functions, elliptic curves cryptography and pairing
based cryptography on personal agendas, and compare them with the costs of basic operating
system functions. Results show that although cryptographic power costs are high and such
operations shall be restricted in time, they are not the main limiting factor of the autonomy
of a device
Experimental evaluation of two software countermeasures against fault attacks
Injection of transient faults can be used as a way to attack embedded
systems. On embedded processors such as microcontrollers, several studies
showed that such a transient fault injection with glitches or electromagnetic
pulses could corrupt either the data loads from the memory or the assembly
instructions executed by the circuit. Some countermeasure schemes which rely on
temporal redundancy have been proposed to handle this issue. Among them,
several schemes add this redundancy at assembly instruction level. In this
paper, we perform a practical evaluation for two of those countermeasure
schemes by using a pulsed electromagnetic fault injection process on a 32-bit
microcontroller. We provide some necessary conditions for an efficient
implementation of those countermeasure schemes in practice. We also evaluate
their efficiency and highlight their limitations. To the best of our knowledge,
no experimental evaluation of the security of such instruction-level
countermeasure schemes has been published yet.Comment: 6 pages, 2014 IEEE International Symposium on Hardware-Oriented

A Survey on Wireless Sensor Network Security
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have recently attracted a lot of interest in
the research community due their wide range of applications. Due to distributed
nature of these networks and their deployment in remote areas, these networks
are vulnerable to numerous security threats that can adversely affect their
proper functioning. This problem is more critical if the network is deployed
for some mission-critical applications such as in a tactical battlefield.
Random failure of nodes is also very likely in real-life deployment scenarios.
Due to resource constraints in the sensor nodes, traditional security
mechanisms with large overhead of computation and communication are infeasible
in WSNs. Security in sensor networks is, therefore, a particularly challenging
task. This paper discusses the current state of the art in security mechanisms
for WSNs. Various types of attacks are discussed and their countermeasures
presented. A brief discussion on the future direction of research in WSN
security is also included.Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures, 2 table
A Survey of Access Control Models in Wireless Sensor Networks

This article is an open access article distributed under the terms and conditions of the Creative Commons Attribution license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/)Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have attracted considerable interest in the research community, because of their wide range of applications. However, due to the distributed nature of WSNs and their deployment in remote areas, these networks are vulnerable to numerous security threats that can adversely affect their proper functioning. Resource constraints in sensor nodes mean that security mechanisms with a large overhead of computation and communication are impractical to use in WSNs; security in sensor networks is, therefore, a challenge. Access control is a critical security service that offers the appropriate access privileges to legitimate users and prevents illegitimate users from unauthorized access. However, access control has not received much attention in the context of WSNs. This paper provides an overview of security threats and attacks, outlines the security requirements and presents a state-of-the-art survey on access control models, including a comparison and evaluation based on their characteristics in WSNs. Potential challenging issues for access control schemes in WSNs are also discussed.Peer reviewe
Efficient and Secure ECDSA Algorithm and its Applications: A Survey
Public-key cryptography algorithms, especially elliptic curve cryptography (ECC)and elliptic curve digital signature algorithm (ECDSA) have been attracting attention frommany researchers in different institutions because these algorithms provide security andhigh performance when being used in many areas such as electronic-healthcare, electronicbanking,electronic-commerce, electronic-vehicular, and electronic-governance. These algorithmsheighten security against various attacks and the same time improve performanceto obtain efficiencies (time, memory, reduced computation complexity, and energy saving)in an environment of constrained source and large systems. This paper presents detailedand a comprehensive survey of an update of the ECDSA algorithm in terms of performance, security, and applications
