Folks in Folksonomies: Social Link Prediction from Shared Metadata
Web 2.0 applications have attracted a considerable amount of attention
because their open-ended nature allows users to create light-weight semantic
scaffolding to organize and share content. To date, the interplay of the social
and semantic components of social media has been only partially explored. Here
we focus on Flickr and Last.fm, two social media systems in which we can relate
the tagging activity of the users with an explicit representation of their
social network. We show that a substantial level of local lexical and topical
alignment is observable among users who lie close to each other in the social
network. We introduce a null model that preserves user activity while removing
local correlations, allowing us to disentangle the actual local alignment
between users from statistical effects due to the assortative mixing of user
activity and centrality in the social network. This analysis suggests that
users with similar topical interests are more likely to be friends, and
therefore semantic similarity measures among users based solely on their
annotation metadata should be predictive of social links. We test this
hypothesis on the Last.fm data set, confirming that the social network
constructed from semantic similarity captures actual friendship more accurately

Friendship prediction and homophily in social media

Here, we study the presence of homophily in three systems that combine tagging social media with online social networks. We find a substantial level of topical similarity among users who are close to each other in the social network. We introduce a null model that preserves user activity while removing local correlations, allowing us to disentangle the actual local similarity between users from statistical effects due to the assortative mixing of user activity and centrality in the social network. This analysis suggests that users with similar interests are more likely to be friends, and therefore topical similarity measures among users based solely on their annotation metadata should be predictive of social links. We test this hypothesis on several datasets, confirming that social networks constructed from topical similarity capture actual friendship accurately. When combined with topological features, topical similarity achieves a link prediction accuracy of about 92%
A multilayered graph-based framework to explore behavioural phenomena in social media conversations
Objective Social media is part of current health communications. This research aims to delve into the effects of social contagion, biased assimilation, and homophily in building and changing health opinions on social media. Materials and Methods Conversations about COVID-19 vaccination on English and Spanish Twitter are the case studies. A new multilayered graph-based framework supports the integrated analysis of content similarity within and across posts, users, and conversations to interpret contrasting and confluent user stances. Deep learning models are applied to infer stance. Graph centrality and homophily scores support the interpretation of information reproduction. Results The results show that semantically related English posts tend to present a similar stance about COVID-19 vaccination (rstance=0.51) whereas Spanish posts are more heterophilic (rstance=0.38). Neither case showed evidence of homophily regarding user influence or vaccine hashtags. Graph filters for Pfizer and Astrazeneca with a similarity threshold of 0.85 show stance homophily in English scenarios (i.e. rstance=0.45 and rstance=0.58, respectively) and small homophily in Spanish scenarios (i.e. r=0.12 and r=0.3, respectively). Highly connected users are a minority and are not socially influential. Spanish conversations showed stance homophily, i.e. most of the connected conversations promote vaccination (rstance=0.42), whereas English conversations are more likely to offer contrasting stances. Conclusion The methodology proposed for quantifying the impact of natural and intentional social behaviours in health information reproduction can be applied to any of the main social platforms and any given topic of conversation. When-To-Post on Social Networks
For many users on social networks, one of the goals when broadcasting content
is to reach a large audience. The probability of receiving reactions to a
message differs for each user and depends on various factors, such as location,
daily and weekly behavior patterns and the visibility of the message. While
previous work has focused on overall network dynamics and message flow
cascades, the problem of recommending personalized posting times has remained
an underexplored topic of research. In this study, we formulate a when-to-post
problem, where the objective is to find the best times for a user to post on
social networks in order to maximize the probability of audience responses. To
understand the complexity of the problem, we examine user behavior in terms of
post-to-reaction times, and compare cross-network and cross-city weekly
reaction behavior for users in different cities, on both Twitter and Facebook.
We perform this analysis on over a billion posted messages and observed
reactions, and propose multiple approaches for generating personalized posting
schedules. We empirically assess these schedules on a sampled user set of 0.5
million active users and more than 25 million messages observed over a 56 day
period. We show that users see a reaction gain of up to 17% on Facebook and 4%
on Twitter when the recommended posting times are used. We open the dataset
used in this study, which includes timestamps for over 144 million posts and
over 1.1 billion reactions. The personalized schedules derived here are used in
a fully deployed production system to recommend posting times for millions of

How to Ask for a Favor: A Case Study on the Success of Altruistic Requests
Requests are at the core of many social media systems such as question &
answer sites and online philanthropy communities. While the success of such
requests is critical to the success of the community, the factors that lead
community members to satisfy a request are largely unknown. Success of a
request depends on factors like who is asking, how they are asking, when are
they asking, and most critically what is being requested, ranging from small
favors to substantial monetary donations. We present a case study of altruistic
requests in an online community where all requests ask for the very same
contribution and do not offer anything tangible in return, allowing us to
disentangle what is requested from textual and social factors. Drawing from
social psychology literature, we extract high-level social features from text
that operationalize social relations between recipient and donor and
demonstrate that these extracted relations are predictive of success. More
specifically, we find that clearly communicating need through the narrative is
essential and that that linguistic indications of gratitude, evidentiality, and
generalized reciprocity, as well as high status of the asker further increase
the likelihood of success. Building on this understanding, we develop a model
that can predict the success of unseen requests, significantly improving over
several baselines. We link these findings to research in psychology on helping
behavior, providing a basis for further analysis of success in social media

Cultural Diffusion and Trends in Facebook Photographs
Online social media is a social vehicle in which people share various moments
of their lives with their friends, such as playing sports, cooking dinner or
just taking a selfie for fun, via visual means, that is, photographs. Our study
takes a closer look at the popular visual concepts illustrating various
cultural lifestyles from aggregated, de-identified photographs. We perform
analysis both at macroscopic and microscopic levels, to gain novel insights
about global and local visual trends as well as the dynamics of interpersonal
cultural exchange and diffusion among Facebook friends. We processed images by
automatically classifying the visual content by a convolutional neural network
(CNN). Through various statistical tests, we find that socially tied
individuals more likely post images showing similar cultural lifestyles. To
further identify the main cause of the observed social correlation, we use the
Shuffle test and the Preference-based Matched Estimation (PME) test to
distinguish the effects of influence and homophily. The results indicate that
the visual content of each user's photographs are temporally, although not
necessarily causally, correlated with the photographs of their friends, which
may suggest the effect of influence. Our paper demonstrates that Facebook
photographs exhibit diverse cultural lifestyles and preferences and that the
social interaction mediated through the visual channel in social media can be

Studying and Modeling the Connection between People's Preferences and Content Sharing
People regularly share items using online social media. However, people's
decisions around sharing---who shares what to whom and why---are not well
understood. We present a user study involving 87 pairs of Facebook users to
understand how people make their sharing decisions. We find that even when
sharing to a specific individual, people's own preference for an item
(individuation) dominates over the recipient's preferences (altruism). People's
open-ended responses about how they share, however, indicate that they do try
to personalize shares based on the recipient. To explain these contrasting
results, we propose a novel process model of sharing that takes into account
people's preferences and the salience of an item. We also present encouraging
results for a sharing prediction model that incorporates both the senders' and
the recipients' preferences. These results suggest improvements to both
algorithms that support sharing in social media and to information diffusion
